James Harden and OJ Mayo are both top 7 SGS in the NBA now. Louis Williams is a top 10 SG. all three would be putting up 20+ ppg and 5+apg if they were starting. OKC vs MEM is going to be a war in the
When i think about Harden and Mayo. Harden reminds me more like LeBron type, super consistent stat stuffer, but front running bullying people, as teams have a handful of dealing with Westbrook and Durant. How many clutch shots has Harden hit? Not ot mention his flopping is out of the control failing his arms like a b*tch any time he drives, which is part of the reason he gets to the line so much.
OJ on the other hand inconsistent at times off the bench, but man that dude seems to show up when you need him most. and he WILLS you to a victory. He did it once again last night. He has been a different player since seeing PG duties. All we need is Mayo to show up four out of seven games, to beat you remember that.
3rd place out West and don't even have our best player playing. That should tell you we have elite talent in Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol and OJ Mayo or else it would be impossible to do, especially out West.

22 points 5 rebs 8 assists 3 steals 9/14 FG 3/8 3pt, and the dagger 3 pointer to seal the game, off the bench. Not bad at all.
OJ Mamba, i mean Mayo will become a superstar in the NBA that actually wins you ball games. Hell with stat padding advertised superstars that can't lead team to a playoffs. Derrick Rose the totally package, but start doing the eye test.
OJ Mayo is a freak in his own right. Just needs to get out of Memphis. OJ playing PG, is the only way he could reach his potential and he is showing it. Deep down even you kneww that would be the only way bigsmoke.
OJ is too big and strong for pretty much every PG in the NBA. His handle are good enough to be a PG. His jumper is a beauty. OJ is simply unstoppable off the pick and roll, because HE HAS THE MOST RANGE IN THE NBA. I emphasis that. his last 3 of 4 games he has hit a 3 pointer from about 27-29 ft range, casually. This playoffs is going to be crazy. It is obvious that OKC and MEM will be going to war in the WCFS. Durant/Gay Zbo/Ibaka Mayo/Westbrook .

Grizzlies will get #2 seed out west, but i'm not sure what our best matchup would be first round. Clippers are probably the easiest team to beat. Better at them in every position by a lot, besides point guard.
Don't really want to see Dallas, Denver, or Houston.

There aren't going to be any easy outs for the West this season, except maybe depending who gets the 8th seed. It'd be pretty sucky to fight for the second seed, and then have to face say the defending champions in the first round.

12 a game off the bench shooting poorly(40 and 41% last couple years) isnt really of note for a player like OJ mayo was supposed to be. Hes not playing especially well even by 6th man standards. Hes no Bobby Jackson or anything. Maybe one day hes a starter again playing pretty well. But for a lottery pick "Next great guard" type? Hes playing Delonte West ball. Which is...ok. But im notsure it justifies comparison to Harden.
Few players have beenbigger letdowns to me. Not that its his fault big things were expected. But it would be nice to see him as the kind of player you cant justify benching.

Dallas just like Clippers. We are better then them in every position, but one.
I'll give the defending champs a little credit. I personally don't want to play them compared to some other teams out West.

There is no way OJ Mayo will ever be a PG. He won't be successful on any big-time level playing the point. He's an out-and-out SG. Anything else is a way to lose.
I actually thought about trading him for Lou Williams...the Sixers have all this depth but they don't have a great scorer and this guy can still be that. He also plays defense very well and would be ideal as the 2guard on that team.
Lou Williams can be the 6th man (probably his best role) on Memphis (where he's actually from) and do what they want Mayo to do...Mayo is more adept at being a starter and it's evidenced by his success his first two seasons. Seems a decent trade.

OJ Mayo is not a PG. It's irrelevant if he'd be a matchup problem because all that would happen is someone would switch to guard him.
And even if he roasts the defender he doesn't necessarily help his team. Just because he's a ball-handler who can pass and fill in when needed doesn't make him a PG. Matchup problems make no sense either. If they did then Dwyane Wade would still be playing PG, but he hasn't played much PG since his rookie season.
Mayo is a scorer who can handle the basketball and make some plays. But he's nothing resembling a PG.

Up until this year I would agree with you but he has actually been very productive as a back up PG. Last night Conley went out with a buster eye and had to get stitches so OJ played way more than he usually does (he usually just does spot minutes to rest Conley). He ended up with 22pts (9-14FG), 8 assists, 5 Rebounds, and 3 steals and should have gotten at least 10 assists but had some guys blow layups. I'm not saying he'd be that productive all the time as a starting PG but he can definitely handle the back up PG role, which is great for the Grizzlies because it lets him get more minutes without taking some away from guys like Tony Allen, Rudy Gay or Quincy Pondexter.

This is so dumb. OJ isn't even my favorite player, he isn't a starter for the same reason Harden isn't a starter. Both teams needed bench scoring and production so they mixed things up and put someone in the starting lineup who doesn't need the ball in their hands. :facepalm

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but if OJ was as good as advertised he'd never come off the bench. Imagine Kobe, D. Rose, Tim Duncan, KG, etc, etc coming off the bench.
The guy is inconsistent (and not as good as the OP makes him out to be) and that is part of the reason he does not start.

OJ is not even in the same discussion as Kobe and those guys. I am a huge OJ fan but you can't take guys like O.J A 6'4Mamba seriously. OJ is very talented and will get better but he had a very off year last year due to many different reasons. He is getting back in the swing of things and is doing exactly what this team needs him to do. He will be a huge part of this playoff run because last year he wasn't at the level he needed to be plus he'd given more freedom to create with the ball in his hands now, especially when he's in the back up PG spot.

His QO is only $7.5mil and depending on the playoff run, it's about 50/50 whether they resign him. I think it's all dependent on the draft. We will have OJ, Speights and Darrell Arthur to make decisions on and I think if there is a great SG available in the draft and they take him, OJ will likely be gone but this draft has a ton of quality PF/C guys so I could just as easily see them taking one of them and letting Speight and DA walk and just resign OJ and Haddadi.

Mayo can only be kept if they move him into the starting line-up. And I don't think it's good to have Allen off the bench, especially not now when he's the best perimeter defender in basketball and a scorer as well.
Letting go of Speights and other big men off the bench makes sense, because they're off the bench. Getting a pick in the 20's is not worth giving up Mayo. You give up Mayo because you know he has to start and you know you're not gonna start him.

I honestly just don't know man, I can see it going either way. A lot can happen between now and then. Next year is TAs last year with the Grizzlies and I doubt they will be able to resign him because he will be wanting or at least be getting offers for higher than he currently is ($3mil/year). Hollins big problem with OJ to begin with was defense but he's stepped that up enough that he is always part of the closing stretch in games. I do kind of agree that if they resign Mayo he needs to start but it's the same problem the Grizzlies are in now, too many starters need the ball and are capable of scoring. One of my favorite stats from this year is no Grizzlies player has scored more than 26 a game and Rudy only did that twice. They play as a team and win as a team and I love being unselfish instead of just trying to get your own points.

OJ won't be able to be retained if Grizzlies have a deep playoff run. Everyone is a prisioner of the moment, and they will give OJ the money he is worth. OJ rookie season stats are right now the 4th best SG in the NBA. Think about that. Is it somewhat mind boggling.
I wouldn't be surprised if OJ starts in the playoffs, like he did at the end of the OKC series.

I always thought Rudy was the best trade they could make. Get a guy like Iguodala, give Philly a scorer. Iguodala would just be the other playmaker and beastly defender. No one would get thru that perimeter defense. Even if it means trading Tony Allen somewhere else, as well.
Tho Mayo seems the easy trade...could always do him for Lou.

Book it.

I doubt he'll be the Finals MVP, even if they do win. But they were my pick to get to the Finals before the season started.
But as far as trading, I mean after the season.

They did him like Michael Ray Richardson. Not that I think most reading this knows who that is.
