CONFIRMED: http://www.insidehoops.com/blog/?p=9434

It's being reported by multiple Philly and Memphis sources that Sam Young has been traded to Philly for a 2nd round pick. It would be interesting if it's the same pick the Grizzlies send to Philly for Speights earlier this year haha.

With Turner starting supposedly Philly wanted some bigger wings off the bench. Young is very strong and a good rebounder, killer pump fake, has a decent midrange and knows how to finish but he takes ill advised shots and forces things. He also hasn't developed anything new from the time he was drafted in 2009 and seems to be out of place on defense more often than not. Because of that, he hasn't played a ton this year and guys like Quincy Pondexter have all his minutes. He did play pretty well starting against the Lakers on Tuesday though.

Trading Sam gets the Grizzlies below the Luxury Tax line, which has been their plan all along. However, the recent interest in Arenas is confusing because I think his vet min contract will put them back over.

It's A VC3!!!

Makes sense. Philly helped them out with Speights when ZBO went down.

It was being reported it was for a 2nd round pick but now I just read through the Commercial Appeal (Memphis big paper) that it is for the rights to Ricky Sanchez who was drafted in 2005? So I'm guessing it was just a salary dump then like I figured.

Memphis just lost some defense for pretty much nothing.

What the ****? He just started for them against the Lakers. I know it was due to injury, but doesn't that just mean he's one of the first off the bench?

Not even close. He has so man DNP-CD this year. Hollins didn't want to mess up the bench rotations the way they had them and Young is strong enough to match up with Artest so he just started him. Young had already asked for a trade since he wasn't ever playing so this gave him a chance to prove to the Grizzlies and other teams what he could do. Again, Hollins is big on growth and knowing where you are supposed to be on defense and how to space the floor and Sam was not on the level of the other wing player when it came to that. He's not a bad player at all, just fell out of the rotation.

Memphis going to sign Arenas as speculated yesterday?

I don't see the point of giving away Young unless they have somebody coming in.

Well the main reason was to get under the Luxury Tax line and to receive the revenue sharing. It's been speculated for a while now that he would be the guy to go since the Grizzlies were roughly $600,000 over the line and Young's contract owed him almost $1,000,000 this year. Now as far as signing Arenas goes, I'm a little confused. I thought the Grizzlies would have to sign him at the vet min of $1.4mil so then we'd have to unload someone like Pargo's $1,000,000 to get under the tax line again. However, the Commercial Appeal tweeted this.

@CAGrizBlog: Because Griz got under tax with Young deal it's easier to sign Gilbert Arenas. Griz would only be on the hook for $300,000 for Arenas

@CAGrizBlog: $300,000 would be prorated amount after NBA picks up a good portion of veteran's minimum.

Someone with more knowledge might be able to explain this.

Wish Indy'd made this move. Philly makes so many moves I want the Pacers to do, especially in the draft.

Weird trade so whose minutes is Sam Young taking? Also Hawes back.

From what I've read, since the 76ers moved Turner into the starting line up, they wanted more size and physicalness that Meeks and Williams can't give them. Sam is a very strong player, so I guess that's why. No idea who's minutes he'll be taking.

Only a month and a half left so Arenas only gets like 300 K.

Reggie Williams? For the love of GOBB. Hopefully that was a trade idea if they didn't land Sam Young.

Awesome. I'll be really happy to see Sam in a Sixers jersey and Meeks getting less PT.
