This was probably the biggest free agent signing in Hip Hop History.
Snoop was one of the hottest rappers at that time, was on the label Death Row Records. he'd been around controversy since he entered the game a mere 6 years earlier.
After the death of his friend Tupac (and Biggie also), Dr. Dre leaving and him being stuck with Suge Knight, he decided to bounce.
But who would he sign with ... Enter Master P and his fledgling West Coast turned Southern label, No Limit Records. P was a hustler, around the time Snoop was making his name known, he was hustling a few hours away in Richmond, Cali pushing his albums out the trunk. But by Snoop's second album, Tha Doggfather, P was well known in the rap world, moving to New Orleans his hometown and selling records with no promotion from MTV or BET.
P and No Limit to the hp hop world by storm in 1997 and Snoop didn't have a home. That was his only logical choice to go to.
He tested the water on Mystikal's album in late 1997, and by 1998 he was on the tank and put in album covers of every release until it's August release.
One of the greatest No Limit Covers ever ...

Went platinum it's second week in stores and in the booklet, his next album already.
Enter No Limit Top Dogg, a somewhat return to his West roots, but his final album was almost all Westside on it. It was one of the first albums to be completely leaked. Suge posted the whole album on the Death Row Records website for download before it was released to stores.
He was to be apart of a No Limit supergroup, Tank Doggs that featured Mystikal, C-Murder, Mac and Fiend ...

Everybody was hyped about Snoop being on No Limit til Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not TO Be Told dropped and everybody was like :wtf: :facepalm :facepalm
and they missed Snoop on Death Row.
Seriously, Master P saves Snoop's career.

I always thought Snoop's last and final album (as well as his best album while w/ NO) with No Limit - Top Dogg was his best 'cover' ...
http://hiphopalbumcovers.com/covers/Snoop-Dogg-No-Limit-Top-Dogg-cover-500.jpg
There's a solid argument to be made that Master P bringing Snoop on board with NL did to some degree breathe fresh air to his sharply declining career (look no further than his last album on Death Row records, Dogg Father).
Having said all that, his music with NL was pretty much trash. Even back in the day, when I could get down with some NL Records, Snoop didn't exactly drop anything groundbreaking. If anything, you could see his album covers breaking on the ground as long time loyal Snoop fans were pissed after hearing such garbage.
There's no question Dr. Dre's Death Row sound and Beats by the Pound were poles apart. The album Top Dogg was actually 'not' that bad. His first NL album, the first track (can't recall the name) was pretty hot though.
_____
In terms of being the best No Limit Records album cover of all time ... well that doesn't go to Snoop, but rather ...

It's a shame dude (Big Ed) was actually a target just as he shows himself on his album's cover, leading to his own demise (death). Big Ed - RIP. That album (The Assassin) wasn't all that great, but it was hot here and there; I'm going to go dig that hot mess up right now and blast that shit.

Loved Master P and No Limit, truly put NO on the map, NO pioneers but really...
Snoop was a West Coast G that had no business being w/ No Limit.
Bad, bad mix of talents, Snoop and Mystikal sounded good together, Silkk, P, and Snoop didn't and the rest of No Limit's roster was weak lyrically compared to Snoop.
Not to mention, they style of hustlin' (No Limit's) was different than Snoop's hustle.
Take that for what it's worth.

No Limit album covers always look like those fliers that black dudes will pass out at the mall inviting you to "grown and sexy saturday" events at some local hole-in-the-wall club.

Do you know that Master P is well known for bitter/swagger jacked?
I read the interview where Mannie Fresh said that "I;m Bout It" was Cash Money said it first and Master P stole it.

Well, they both came out in 1995 so I doubt Percy stole I'm Bout It. That's was just something people from New Orleans said
U.N.L.V. didn't cry like Yukmouth did for Ice Cream Man.
Dru Down ft. Luniz: Ice Cream Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAqUP4Dt5co)
Same thing here, Hustlers called them selves Ice Cream Man or Candy Man.

Master P was from Cali and he moved to N.O. and took it like it was his. Even Mannie Fresh said himself that P took it/stole it like it was his.
Master P jacked Outkast's song " Hootie Hoo" where he had song "Hoody Hoo".
Of course, No Limit stole 2Pac lines from words to words especially C-Murder and P.
C-Murder stole idea from Eazy-E's song

Hootie Hoo is like a gang call ain't it? Marlon Wayans use to scream at on the Wayans Bros TV Show.
And P was NO, moved to Cali than once he was established, came back to NO. Mannie should be happy, if P never came back, Cash Money would have never blown up.
And Mannie Fresh bit No Limit, you no what Cash Money sounded like when P was in Cali, a lot of freakin bounce music.
When P came back home, he changed the whole landscape, and Cash Money basically dumped it's artist who originally started on the label like Kilo G, Mr. Ivan, Lil Slim, PXW, UNL, ect and got a new crop of artist like The BG'z (BG and Lil Wayne) and Juvenile.
