16 PBA players included in PH pool

MANILA, Philippines – Denver Nugget’s JaVale McGee might suit up for the Philippine basketball team when it campaigns for the FIBA-Asia Championships next year.

The 7-foot NBA center has already given his go-signal to be a naturalized Filipino citizen and the process has already begun, according to PBA.ph.

National team coach Chot Reyes said he wanted to include McGee in the list to add more height to the Philippine roster.

McGee teaming up with naturalized citizen and fellow 7-footer Marcus Douthit could boost the Philippines' chances in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the PBA Board of Governors has already approved the inclusion of 16 league players into the national pool.

Included in the list are Gary David, Jayson Castro, Larry Fonacier, LA Tenorio, Alex Cabagnot, Enrico Villanueva, Ryan Reyes and Marc Pingris.

They join FIBA veterans Jimmy Alapag, Arwind Santos, Marcio Lassiter, James Yap, Gabe Norwood, Ranidel de Ocampo, Kelly Williams and Sonny Thoss.

“The only condition is that they don’t pull out the players in any conference of the PBA so as not to deprive the fans of their presence,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

Salud said the Board is even willing to add four more PBA players in the national pool.

The national team will prepare for the coming Jones Cup in Taipei in August and the Stankovic Cup in Japan in September.

“I fully intend to use these tournaments as a big part of the selection process for the final line-up of the team,” Reyes said.

He will give McGee a lot of money. Mcgee will be a first class celebrity here in the Philippines. He will date some of the hottest Filipina models.

“Smart is a great company,” McGee said in a roundtable discussion with reporters on Tuesday. “It’s a great phone company for the Filipino people. It’s an honor to be here.”

“McGee is one of the freshest and most exciting players in the NBA today,” said Smart chief wireless advisor Orlando Vea.

I've seen this team play before and they're pretty terrible. McGee will make them less bad, but that's about it.

They lost by 30-40 points to Partizan's bench players (Serbian league) and rarely if ever beat Asia's top national teams who suck on the international scene. China? LOL.

Good for them though, Pinoys love their basketball.

we beat split our games with Iran 1-1 and beat them by 30pts I believe, our problem was containing Haddadi, I believe with the added height and athleticism of Mcgee we have a shot of atleast Silver, I think China is reaching but if they get beat by Korea or Iran we have a shot at gold. The only thing I dont like about this is it would seem like a empty victory since we required 2 Americans and a couple of Half filipinos.

This suck so much, so lame of these crappy countries to naturalize player who have zero connection with the actual country..

Every "good" (asian standards) nation in Asia have naturalized player but China and Iran, cred to them.

I bet the phagg0t Brian from Pampanga is happy now.

you mean like Spain getting Ibaka?

But he's not Asian or Filipino. He's a black American. Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having "Team Philippines"?

Citizenship Through Naturalization. Spain naturalized Serge Ibaka. Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon was also a Naturalized American Citizen.

Yeah, I don't like those instances either. Naturalizing a player from another country for the sole purpose of having them play for your national team, which is supposed to be comprised of real citizens.

I see. The Current FIBA rule is one naturalized player per team.

Ibaka spent time in Spain and knows the language, Hakeem spent 12 years in the US before becoming a citizen.
