Ball is same place in second image than in the first after Wilt touched it. And wilt made it go higher. Thus the ball was already in the second part of it's arc. THerefore it's goaltending.

Whether they look like Goal tends or not, neither were whistled as goal tends and the ball was kept in play because ultimately it is ref discretion. Goal tending rule has been a part of basketball since before the 1950's.
I expect backlash from controversial posts like this, it's Kareem's sacred, elegant skyhook and it has never looked uglier than in those GIFs

The thing about that shot is that it never really got much higher then his initial release so it can't really be called a block based on it soley being on its downward trajectory. In that GIF it got up a bit and as the ball started going down Gilmore blocked it. If that isn't a goaltend I don't know what is.

i'm 23 so i'm not an old school junky but Hakeem averaged 17 in 1999. you're telling me Hakeem in his prime wouldn't average more PPG than David Lee if he was playing in the league today when he outscored Shaq in the Finals.

A small, weak, unathletic scrub ass Hakeem with moves that every 5th grader can pull off would be lucky to post 10 PPG and 5 RPG at his peak. Today's league has hyper athletes like this putting up 27 PPG 15 RPG:

To be fair that's an ABA vs NBA all-star game. It isn't possible the ref's were either bias (if hosted by the ABA) or perhaps letting stuff fly to keep the game entertaining. I should note Kareem does not complain or even give a glance to the refs in any of the 2 clips in the footage I pulled them from. You'd think he'd be kinda pissed if those guys were goal tending him w/o getting calls no? If not the All-Star game then certainly that LA/Bucks playoff game

Wilt outplayed Kareem in the playoffs. Not necessarily the regular season (especially in '72) but both playoff matchups Wilt has the upper hand. In '71 he played so well against Kareem the Milwaukee Bucks fans gave him a several minute standing ovation for the show he put on. Old veterans can still ball when it counts. Your point still stands, I was just reinforcing it even more so based on how Wilt did against the then "MVP" Kareem.

I'm not trying to prove anything I just think it's funny to see basketballs most unstoppable shot in history suddenly get denied. That beautiful masterpiece of a shot suddenly looks as trashed as any other blocked shot once it goes sailing in the other direction :lol
Most players never even get close to the ball once Kareem released it so it's impressive A-Train and Wilt could even get at it. No disrespect to the Skyhook. It's still the greatest NBA weapon of all time imo

The greatest NBA weapon of all time was Chamberlain's post game.
He didn't just write the book - he invented the entire encyclopedia. To this day I have never seen a post move that Wilt didn't have in his 1966-1969 arsenal.

Add to that, the creator of the (big man) fade-away, Wilt
One tier down are these shots:
Jerry West's, Ray Allen's, Larry Bird's, Reggie Miller's jumpers - almost impossible to get a hand on, most of them have a reputation for clutch to add insult to injury when the game is on the line.
The 20+ times it's on footage I've never seen Wilt's finger roll get close to being blocked, and West reinforces it's effectiveness saying you just can't stop it after Wilt uses it in the '71 game against the Bulls. However, it isn't able to be shot from a wide range of spots on the floor.
Hakeem's Dream Shake, same as Wilt's finger roll. Virtually unstoppable, just doesn't have the same flexibility as the aforementioned mid-range fade-away shots.
Gervin's Finger Roll's. Same as with Wilt, virtually unblockable
I'm sure there's more - anyone feel free to add to this

And yet I wonder how many here have ever heard the name of Sidney Wicks...
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1083463/2/index.htm
Wooden waited until just before the game to tell Wicks he was guarding Gilmore, who is so tall that he can stand flat-footed and touch the rim with the ball. "I thought I was going to guard anybody but him," said Sidney. The original strategy was for Wicks to stay at Gilmore's side, like a Siamese twin, while the other Bruins pressured the passers. It didn't work. Artis scored three times from in close (he never scores from anywhere else) and Jacksonville had a quick eight-point lead, 14-6, when UCLA finally woke up enough to call time-out.
Wooden moved Wicks around behind Gilmore and had Patterson and others ease off their own men a little to help out. "If Gilmore did get it inside," said Wooden later, "it would be in close quarters and difficult for him to get the shot. With men all around you with their hands up, it's just not that easy."
The important hands belonged to Wicks, "the most intimidating man in basketball," according to one West Coast coach. Gilmore had replaced Alcindor as the premier shot-blocker in the country, but Wicks, giving away six inches, blocked Artis' shots four times. "I couldn't move him no kinda way," said Sidney, whose famous glare did not have much effect, possibly because it only reached Gilmore's collarbone. "So I tried to make him get the ball six or seven feet from the basket and I'd back off him. Then I had room to jump between him and the hoop."
It's hard to say whether Wicks' defense intimidated Gilmore, but for whatever reason Artis had a horrible shooting night—nine for 29—and was out-rebounded by Sidney 18 to 16.
That article didn't mention a key play in that game. THE statement of the game came early...Wicks DUNKED on Artis early in the game (dunking was illegal back then), and Gilmore was shell-shocked the rest of the game.

In any case, Gilmore came into that game as the nation's leading rebounder (I believe at around 25 rpg), and was shooting over 60% from the floor. Wicks blocked FOUR (or perhaps even FIVE...depending on who you choose to believe) of his shots, held him to a miserable 9-29 shooting performance, and, he OUTREBOUNDED Gilmore, 18-16.
