If the Spurs win their 5th title this year how will that affect your all-time rankings of Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Pop?

Timmy will what ever happens still be counted as the best PF ever. Pop if he makes it this time he is arguably the GOAT coach then.

It doesnt affect it.
Duncan is arguably the best PF of all time. Top 10 player of all time. Winning another title doesnt boost him any further than he is. He's not playing every game for 35mpg+ either this season.

Before we figure out what it'd do for his legacy, we'd need to see how central he would be to the win. Was it mainly Timmy? Or mainly Tony, Manu (he'll be back by then, right?), et al.?

If the Spurs win a 5th NBA title, I think the only one who really gets a boost will be Pop. Duncan will go down as one of the greatest PFs in the game. Parker and Ginobili will be talked about. But Pop will have to be considered one of the greatest coaches of all-time. Phil, Red, Pat, and Pop. Nice list.

No, it would be ridiculous to think Duncan winning another ring somehow raises where he is ranked among other NBA greats. Especially considering Duncan sits out games for "rest", doesnt even play 30mpg and has career lows in various stat categories. Yet somehow if Spurs won another ring? He gets a boost.
There isnt much Duncan can do to improve his legacy in the game of basketball. But hey if Spurs win another title in 3-4yrs and Duncan happens to be on the roster? Well how can you argue Duncan isnt arguable the greatest bball player of all time

To me, right now, it's a debate between Wilt, Bird, Kobe and Duncan in those 5-8 spots. If Duncan is able to make a big run here and win a title (in this year no less) it does give him a big plus in his column.
I'm not someone who just looks at the number of rings and ranks players. It's just that you have to imagine what it would take for the Spurs to win a title this year. Dirk jumped in a lot of rankings this last year because of his run to a title and not just because he got a ring.
For Duncan to be able to slide down a gear and still be a stellar teammate and help his team win does mean something to me. If the Spurs win a title this year, I think that does change things a bit.
Duncan has been able to move down from being the main guy to being a bit more of a glue guy and high caliber role player with ease.
Right now, we see Kobe nightly struggling to do the same and it hurts his team. If Duncan wins a ring at this stage, yes, I think it does change his level for me a bit.
I don't see why that's crazy. Just like LeBron's level changes if he wins titles or not. It's not the number of rings, but how they're won.

Yes and Duncan being a high caliber role player/glue guy changes things. :oldlol:
Good one bro. No really.
Lebron is playing at a high level an elite bball player who has played half the amount of seasons Duncan has (roughly). Big difference with him being helped by winning rings vs someone like Duncan nearing an endin his career.
Drob didnt get helped by being in Duncans shoes (today). Dont see how Duncan gets helped.

This difference is that Duncan at this moment means more to the Spurs than Robinson did back then. Unless, you know, you REALLY like Tony Parker.
You're really undervaluing what Duncan does for the Spurs. If you took him off that team and replaced him with Chris Bosh, do you really think they're second in the West right now?
This isn't like Shaq in Boston. For the Spurs to win a title Duncan will have to play very well and there's no doubt his minutes will go up. He's still the #2 or maybe #3 (with Manu healthy) guy on that team.
How many guys can you say were apart of championship cores for over 12 years? Russell and...

In all reality, another ring for Duncan means just about as much as Lebron getting his first this year with his buddy D-Wade. I don't get your argument of Duncan not playing 35+ minutes, therefor any success they bring shouldn't be credited to Duncan at all? He's old obviously, but still a huge part of what we do. You act like Duncan is frozen on the all time list because he is past his prime. With another title run, he would be neck and neck with Shaq as the greatest big man of their generation. You are a moron to suggest another ring would do nothing to his status.
He's currently playing 29 minutes a game, averaging 15 points, 9 boards, and a block and a half per game. People give Garnett credit all the time for his play this season, but Duncan is playing just as good is less minutes. Obviously you don't agree with the rest but the point is that the rest is necesarry for us to be healthy in the playoffs and that's all that really matters to us. Seeing as how you guys all say we are a regular season team, why not just rest our best players from time to time while still picking up W's (10 of our last 11 btw) and then give it a go during the playoffs.
Me thinks you have a little grudge (surprise, surprise) against our team (perhaps every team except the Sixers, I dunno) because those kinds of opinions don't come from an unbiased fan.

Tony Parker has played great this season. So yeah I like Tony Parker.
First for the bold I dont see what that has to do with the argument. Duncans legacy in the game has already taken into consideration his tenure with the Spurs and its success.
Chris Bosh? Why pick him. I dont value Chris Bosh highly. He doesnt bring two things I like from big men. Defense and rebounding. He doesnt even bring what the Spurs would need to replace with Duncan. Spurs can win a title so long as Duncan rebounds, defend and they pick n roll teams to death. Duncan doesnt have to play amazing. He doesnt have to play besides himself. He doesnt have to show Duncan in his prime. Spurs have a great coach, a deep team, one of the leagues best benches, an underrated PG in Parker. And with a healthy Manu? The team as a whole is good enough that it doesnt need to depend on big things from Duncan to win. Which is why I dont see how his legacy gets boosted if Spurs were to win. It's be another number added, another mention in his bio. It wouldnt have him surpass someone like Wilt Chamberlain. You're not going to pass Wilt because you were a nice glue guy, really great role player for the Spurs when they won the title. Sorry. Just doesnt make sense to me at all.
Spurs have beaten top Western Conference teams with Duncan playing subpar offensively. Tim Duncan legacy is pretty much cemented. When you are being considered the greatest PF to ever do it (given the list of great PFs this league has seen). When you're considered one of the top 10 players of all time. These are the ultimate compliments that only a handful of NBA players in the HISTORY of basketball can stake claim too. To think you after being placed on a pinnacle of greatness you can at the tail end of your career move yourself up even more is ridiculous.
It could help coach Pop more than it would Tim Duncan.
Ah, the gratification of knowing you have no response to the argument at hand.
Feels nice.

Put me on ignore then. Save me the trouble of reading someone thinking Spurs winning a 5th title moves Duncan past Wilt Chamberlain. I appreciate it.

Nothing I posted is anywhere near out of my ass. That post was full of information countering your argument that Duncan gains nothing from a 5th ring at this point.
But the only thing you can point out from it is that I said you have a "grudge" against the Spurs, to which I also stated: (perhaps is just toward all teams other than the Sixers).
If you can't even handle a basic discussion about a simple basketball topic then what the hell are you doing on this forum? Do you get jollies from bursting people's bubbles about their average teams and then cry yourself to sleep when you have to go home at night and watch the Sixers blow? That is what I've come to gather from witnessing your many wasteful and useless posts.

In my eyes in order for Duncan to have a chance to move up, he'd have to play the minutes he's playing now and win two rings. A Finals MVP could help as well. Even if he wins two more rings I don't think that cracks him into the top 5 still, but it makes for a stronger argument for him obviously.

Dude are you serious? You come into every Spurs related thread and hate on whoever and whatever it is we are being positive about. :lol I don't make douchey comments like yourself or disrespect people's opinions. I have never once hated on your Sixers before this thread, but you have the audacity to disregard any accomplishments from our team (either current or past) from what I can only assume is dissatisfaction with your current team which is understandable.
As for past arguments and me being bitter? I don't really recall many arguments that I was able to go into detail with you with. Usually after I elaborate I write long responses, but after that point you tend to either leave or just chose not to respond. In this case I'm the dissapointed one because you give no further effort and therefore mine is wasted.
But don't sit here and lie and say you have nothing against the Spurs. You are sour in just about every thread you post in. I'm curious to know why you are so bitter not just toward us, but toward everyone.
As for everything else you post you are just trying to be a cynical d!ck. If that's how you roll, my man, by all means do your thing. But you are really nothing but a burden to this board where people want to come and discuss basketball, not just be a douchebag like yourself.

Pretty much how it goes. And someone disagreeing with a thread about the Spurs they are now haters. Sorry linZO I dont see it the same way as you. Doesnt make me a hater. It makes me a THUG tho because I'm sitting here with a hoody on my head. Dont shoot me. I know how that makes you feel. :coleman:

So...according to you(linzomouring), even though it has absolutely nothing to do with me. I'm somehow supposed to be mad that you can't stand hearing the truth that EVERY YEAR the Spurs are supposed to win, and EVERY YEAR they disappoint?:facepalm
Good luck with that:sleeping
oh please man. if you just said that then you wouldnt be labeled a spurs troll bro. plenty of people dont have faith in the spurs and dont think they will win a ship this year or even make it out of the first round. doesnt mean you have to go into EVERY spurs thread or wherever they are talked about and trash the spurs. I understand you have lebron kids dogging the lakers like that in every thread and doing it everyday. its a free country though and the internet so trash the spurs all you want lmao. haters gonna hate
^
^ Clearly it wasn't that one comment that set him off. It's a buildup of dealing with gobb through a whole gamethread.

If Spurs win 5th title... I will celebrate!... what ever happens on ISH is pretty much irrelevant... Naturally, there will be supporters, haters, and people who don't care.
if spurs won a 5th title im sure the series would be rigged. or the other teams must of all got injured.

The same thing is said of the Spurs...EVERY YEAR. And EVERY YEAR, they disappoint. Spurs still have some pieces to contend, but they're not going anywhere, IMO.

In my eyes in order for Duncan to have a chance to move up, he'd have to play the minutes he's playing now and win two rings. A Finals MVP could help as well. Even if he wins two more rings I don't think that cracks him into the top 5 still, but it makes for a stronger argument for him obviously.
GOBB,
Why you so bitter all the time?
Seriously. I don't understand why somebody who literally does nothing but gripe about what gets posted would bother spending so much time on here.

Backpeddle now all you want. The fact of the matter is, you didn't bother to read my post to begin with. You just felt this URGENT NEED to put my name in your mouth, for some strange and yet still unknown reason. And embarrassed yourself doing so. Simple as that.

You might as well quit now. I've had that LakersReign guy on ignore for awhile, as have a lot of other folks. Dude has never posted anything of substance and literally just provokes people into hilarious 'debates'. He also does that bizarre thing where he puts your username in parentheses for no apparent reason.

Everyone is also underrating this man right here. He could easily be the guy we need as a solid 4th option in the playoffs. Plus we all know he can defend Dirk, and hit clutch shots.

we dont need to waste our time and prove it when we have other people in here agreeing with us. you must be a slow troll

I haven't seen a lot of Diaw so far, but he didn't even play last night. I am really hoping he can pan out as one of our better interior defenders by the playoffs since Pop is hesistant to play Duncan with Splitter. As a Spurs fan you just can't explain how much joy you have that RJ is off the roster too. :oldlol: It's a great feeling though, and just seeing Jack back on the court is a plus.

To me, right now, it's a debate between Wilt, Bird, Kobe and Duncan in those 5-8 spots. If Duncan is able to make a big run here and win a title (in this year no less) it does give him a big plus in his column.
I can agree with this. A championship and Finals MVP will automatically put Duncan in the Top 5 All-Time GOATs; bumping both Bird and Wilt. A title, he would most likely bump Bird at #6.
And Duncan is the 2nd best player on the Spurs this season so I don't know how he can just be considered a "role player" by some people here.

The person you are agreeing with labelled Duncan as such. Funny.

You can never count the Spurs out until it actually happened. They actually are contending for the top seed in Western Conference now.
Spurs don't need the #1 seed. I mean hypothetically HCA in the WCF would be nice but we shouldn't even be thinking that far at all. I'm looking to get the best first round matchups possible right now.

If the Spurs win their 5th title this year how will that affect your all-time rankings of Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Pop?
+1 for all of them
