I don't know why this topic made me lol. I was actually wondering if a entire team plane is going to go down. I remember when Oden, Aldridge, and Roy were actually healthy I thought about this. Like, it would be bad enough for that to happen to anyone let alone to truly special talents.

Here is Hank Gathers' death. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qymg5uAWMFQ)

The closest thing in the NBA thus far is probably this Reggie Lewis collapse (www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpMi8N9VcNw#t=8m05), which was followed shortly thereafter by him collapsing and dying during a practice.

Yep.

Also, we had a high school star in our area die last year mere moments after he hit the game-winning layup in a game that led his team to the best record in school history (20-0). Unfortunately, this kind of thing can in fact happen to anyone. The NBA won't be exempt, though hopefully they have enough safety precautions and reactions to ready themselves for such a moment.

Yes, I recall that story. Very sad stuff.

Reggie Lewis was one of those players that young fans really don't get to appreciate. His death overshadowed what was a very good career and a really good player.

You probably should read the thread or at least glance through it before posting.

You are thinking of Reggie Lewis. He didn't die on the court during a game. He collapsed during a game and had a battery of tests... Finally, after being cleared to play, he collapsed again during a practice and died.

The truth is that he shouldn't have been cleared, which would've saved his life rather than career.

Not only did he admit that he was a casual cocaine user, not cocaine addict, but the "Dream Team" doctors knew he had a heart condition. His family sued the shit out of them and I believe they won a lot of money for it. They should've sued the Celtics but their whole stance was they trusted the 1 doctor who said Lewis' heart condition wasn't as severe as the others believed it was.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing can in fact happen to anyone. The NBA won't be exempt, though hopefully they have enough safety precautions and reactions to ready themselves for such a moment.

1. This kind of thing can't happen to anyone. The problem is always attributed to an "undiagnosed heart condition". Not everyone has a problem with their heart, a very small % of the population does and an even smaller % has a life threatening heart condition. Most dont know which is the result of many people(mostly poor) not having the reason or financial means to undergo an EKG or Echochardiogram. Those things can be detected using those tests to screen for issues and can save lives. That should be mandatory for any athlete who plays HS sports let alone college sports. But we all know about our medical system in the United States.

2. The NBA has the most advanced medical screening system in professional sports. The reasoning for it was so that another Hank Gathers/Reggie Lewis or even a Jason Collier type of situation never occurs again. Unlike the NFL who only does an EKG, the NBA was the first league to institute a yearly, mandatory physical. Not only do they do an EKG to test heart functionality, but they do an Echocardiogram to measure heart size and a Stress Test to measure the heart's reaction to extreme exertion like NBA players have to deal with. They immediately detected Mikhail Torrance(2010 NBA Draft prospect) had a heart condition, no team signed him, and weeks later he collapsed and nearly died after a workout. They knew of Chris Wilcox's family history of enlarged aorta's and monitored his abnormally sized aorta monthly until they noticed a sudden change that prompted surgery. Jeff Green is in the same boat. Eddy Curry? Remember why Isiah Thomas is now a coach at FIU. Not only that but they know all about other athletes and various underlying conditions they have with their body, which often is discovered pre-draft. They knew Brandon Roy had arthritic knees before he even stepped on the court in Portland. They've taken major precautions to make sure no player is ever going to die on a court in a NBA game.

For sure. I tend to forget it was such a huge story, so I wasn't sure people would know who I was talking about if I just said "Wes Leonard". His school was just a few miles from my house. Surreal and unfortunate situation. On top of everything else, it was strange to see small yet familiar local areas such as Fennville, Martin, and Bridgman landing in national news.

It's a fair question to raise up considering a soccer player just died in Italy whilst playing. It has been happening in soccer these last years, at least one or two causalities per year but that's because soccer is a sport very hard on your cardio, NBA isn't, so there's no reason to think it will happen unless it's something really strange.
