The Oklahoma City MSA is a little bigger than you think.

Oklahoma City, OK MSA-1,252,987

At 1.2 million people, it is the 43rd largest urban area in the country.

Good point.

But hey, don't discount 120,000 people.

Baseball only had 443,000 people for the ENTIRE COUNTRY for its Nationally televised baseball game Wednesday. And the MLB game featured teams from Miami and Philadelphia, 2 huge markets!

Plus, the season has just started, you would think baseball would still be new and fresh for the fans.:confusedshrug:

Think about this. The Oklahoma City Thunder draw about a 3rd of the audience (using Oklahoma City only) that a Nationally televised baseball game gets for the entire country, featuring a team from the giant city of Philadelphia!

MLB has some weird time schedule on their televised games. During the regular season, they often have games between 1PM to 6PM on TBS or Fox and a few prime time(8PM or later) on ESPN.

And their postseason schedule is even worse. They don't start games until 8:30 or 9 PM on the eastcoast and most of their games don't end until midnight or 1 in the morning.

Only watched one full Baseball game last year on TV.

I do like to go to Live games a few times a year though. It's nice just going out to the park and enjoying the atmosphere. The games seem to move a lot faster when you're there Live as well.

I'll be attending the A's @ Angels game next Wednesday. Let's go Oakland.

I have never watched a baseball game on TV. I have been to one live game in my life (Angels home game in 2008).

I only watch the Super Bowl (or, rather, I attend Super Bowl parties for the free food and to laugh at the commercials) regarding football.

I watch every game I can for basketball. Lakers and Clippers are on local cable, and anytime ESPN, ABC, TNT, or NBATV have games, I'm flipping back and forth. I've been to about 5 Laker games live and 5 or 6 Clippers games live since they moved to Staples Center.

I just don't understand those other sports I guess. Too slow. Too boring.

You're using old population figures fyi. OKC grew like 14% from 2009 to 2010, I really wouldn't be surprised to see the OKC metro area having around 1.5 million people.

Not that really matters though; regardless, it's impressive for the NBA. I really think the shortened season is helping them.

I use to think baseball was just a boring sport as well, but then I started watching a little bit and actually started learning about the sport. I began to understand the psychology and chess play behind it all, and now I fairly enjoy watching the sport. The past two years alone I've began watching baseball much more. Basketball and football will always be my top sports of course, but baseball is a nice change of pace, and its really is the perfect summer sport to invest in and enjoy. I encourage others to learn more about the sport as well. I use to think football was lame, and really didn't start watching it until I was about fifteen, and now I love it just as much as basketball.

Hockey however, has been a little bit difficult to get into. I enjoy watching it as well, mostly because of my love for sports period. But the hockey season runs parallel to the NBA, so every time it comes down to watching one of the two at any given night, its no contest really.

I disagree.

The baseball season has just started. It should be new and fresh. Plus the TV ratings for MLB included the Philadelphia, which is a GIANT TV market.

On the flip side, the NBA games mentioned in the OP involved Golden State, Portland and Milwaukee. These are not marquee National teams (although NY is) at all. Yet the NBA still stomped MLB.

I am a big sports fan in general. I like football and tennis a lot and will even watch soccer if it's the world cup or something. But I don't understand baseball or its popularity. There's nothing to observe. No creativity whatsoever. It's fun to go to the games, but I can't watch it on TV.

Maybe I just don't watch it enough. I read something about how Manny Ramirez would do all this crazy stuff every time he was at the mound to mess with pitchers. If I were to watch him, there's no way I would notice it, though.

Though, as it currently stands, basketball is doing much better globally for sure.

The NFL ,when it comes to marketing, branding and public relations is so much better than everyone else, I have often thought that there should be college business courses available to study what the NFL does. Seriously. Their business model is that good.

Some funny posts in this thread...

Golf pulls in massive ratings on Sundays going up against the giants of the NFL when their marquee players are in the hunt (tiger/phil).

And with the baseball comparison in the OP, that was a meaningless EARLY regular season game with one good team vs a mediocre team. ONE of 162 regular season games that they play in 180 days.. You're comparing that to a game with two marquee teams fighting for playoff seeding with only 8 games left in the season... :facepalm

Did you read the OP?

Since when are Golden State, Milwaukee and Portland marquee NBA teams?

The MLB game included the Philadelphia Phillies, which is one of the most popular MLB teams in the league and a huge TV market for the league.

Plus, MLB was still in its opening few games. Shouldn't it have a little flash? Your'e not telling me that Baseball gets old and stale for its fans during the first week of the season are you?

Try this.

For the opening night of Baseball, ESPN moved its NBA telecast to ESPN2 to clear the air of its flagship station for the OPENING NIGHT of baseball.

The result?

The OPENING NIGHT of the Baseball season featuring the very popular St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins scored a 1.8 overnight national TV rating.

Meanwhile the NBA game (Heat/Thunder) which was moved to ESPN2 to make way for baseball scored a 2.1 overnight national TV rating.

Source: ESPN

Are you arguing that fans of baseball are already bored of the sport on OPENING NIGHT?

BTW... Golf gets absolutely wiped out by the NFL on Sundays. Its not even close.

Again. The god awful marlins vs the cards. Im sure St louis households were glued to the tv, there were probably 40k people still at the game.

Last night I was watching the Lakers play at the same time the Dodgers were playing. If the roles were reversed and the MLB season was winding down.. The Dodgers fighting the Padres for the division, and the Lakers were playing a meaningless regular season game against the Bobcats, id be watching the Dodgers game.

Is it insane to assume the sports fans in Miami decided to watch the heat battle the #1 team in the NBA with the biggest threat to their superstars MVP chances a mere handful of days after being embarrassed by them? Seems pretty logical to me.

In regards to your golf comment...Not when tiger or phil are in the hunt on Sunday as I mentioned in my post. People tune away from regular season NFL games in hordes to watch Tiger play golf. 100% fact. Tiger won a small tournament a couple weeks ago and pulled in a 4. something overnighter. Every time Tiger has been in the hunt for majors on Sunday golf has insane ratings that even beat out those NFL games.

actually, the marlins game drew a bigger rating locally than the heat-thunder game (5.4 rating vs 3.6)

http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2012/04/thunderheat-on-espn2-beats-mlb-opener-on-espn-but-marlins-top-heat-in-miami/

there seems to be a trend of MLB get better ratings locally, with the NBA doing a little better nationally. i think these numbers are from 2010, but baseball kills the NBA in the large majority of markets

Please read the OP again. Games involving the Golden State Warriors and Portland Trailblazers were out-drawing MLB regular season games.

Plus the NBA games were airing at later time-slots outside of the primetime TV window in the EST. Yet they still outdrew the baseball game. I would add that the baseball game should have been fresh for its fans in that the season was just starting. In addition the Phillies ARE A MARQUEE NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM.

As for Golf, even with Tiger Woods in contention, the sport doesn't COME CLOSE TO touching the NFL. Nothing does. Tiger pulling a 4.0 rating is nothing for an NFL game. NFL preseason games draw better than that. An NFL regular season game can draw up to 4 times that number. A playoff and/or Super Bowl game is off the charts.

I really think you need to do more home work before addressing this thread again. Google is your friend.:oldlol:

BTW, Tiger Woods first PGA win since since his fall from grace earned a 4.8 overnight rating. Which for Golf is phenomenal! However for the world of NFL football, such a rating is laughable.

Want proof.

The NFL Pro Bowl drew a 7.9 TV rating. Yes, the sorry Pro Bowl drew a TV audience greater than a Tiger Woods victory or even some Baseball and NBA playoff games! That's how big the NFL is. To compare anything to the NFL is foolhardy. Again.... google is your friend. Please use it before responding again.

Just because I find this stuff interesting, I actually went back and looked at the the TV ratings for the 2011 World Series. I found this interesting nugget.

Game 3 of the World Series (10/22/11) actually only got a 6.6 TV rating.

The NFL Pro Bowl this past year got a 7.9!

Yes, that's right folks, the NFL Pro Bowl, which even by the standards of die-hard NFL fans is a useless activity, actually drew a larger audience than at least one World Series game. Amazing.

BTW.. in case you are wondering, the lowest rated or least watched NBA Finals game of 2011 was 9.0 TV rating for Game 1.

That's pretty sad for what use to be America's pastime.
