View Full Version : Prednisone and Withdrawal
Long boring story short, i had a bad allergic reaction, spent all day in the emergency room (literally) and was given (among a bunch of other things) a large amount of Prednisone, a pretty nasty steroid.
It made me super naseous, and i was giving more pills to take tonight and tomorrow to wean off it. After i took the first i threw up, so i can't take it. So i stopped.
I AM HAVING WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. Hand numbness, and tingling, i've very nervous, i'm sweaty and i feel kind of groggy (although that might be from the Benadryl too.
After ONE day and one large dosage i have withdrawal symptoms. Has this every happened to you?

RN student here and I don't think it's withdrawal. Could be many things. Need more info.
Best see your doctor again if it is bad
Nervousness, sleeplessness, and sweats accompany large doses of prednisone and other steroids. Transplant recipient; I've taken as much as 3G daily, so I know that stuff is the devil.
Never have encountered nausea or tingling. If that persists, I'd see the doc.
Bet you're right about the grogginess being attributed to Benadryl.

I've taken it before but I was able to succesfully wean myself off it without much of an issue. I would prob just get in touch with a doctor because it can have some nasty side effects. Most of thee side effects are a result of prolonged usage so I think you should be finee.

just finished medical school and about to start residency in July.
From what you are saying, it appears that you are having a side effect to prednisone and not a withdrawal. You can't have withdrawal after one dosage. Withdrawals occur in chronic users.
How bad is your nausea? numbness and tingling is also a SE of it.
what other drugs did they give you?
If i was you, i would see the doctor and stop taking anymore of the prednisone until you confirm your symptoms with a doc.
This is not normal so you would be better off seeing a doc.

I've been on Prednisone at 2 different times in my life for 2 different reasons (will be on it again any time now), but I have not had any withdrawal symptoms. I got pretty sick the second time I was on Prednisone, but I think that was actually due to a different pill I was on at the same time (Cytoxin). I gained extra waterweight when on Prednisone though. That was the only side effect I really remember from that pill.

He likely isn't having withdrawal, but you can certainly get withdrawals from substances without being a chronic user if you take a bunch of it at one time. For example, a hangover after a night of heavy drinking is withdrawal symptoms from alcohol.
OP - What is going on that led to you being put on Prednisone in the first place?

I had a severe allergic reaction to something i ate. It had to be some sort of nut in the food. The reaction just would not stop, it wasn't particularly fast moving but it wasn't stopping.
I am ok now, took basically to this morning to shake everything. The shaking stopped the night i posted though. When you have a bad allergic reaction, it feels like you were poisoned, it takes time for your body to snap back to normal.
To get the reaction and the related symptoms to stop i had
6 benadryl (equivalent)
Anti Vomit medicine
Prednisone
4 asthma treatments (albuterol)
Pepcid
and the original Epipen.
Too much medication.

Crazy. I'm having a back pain on my lower right side. It shoots down towards my the back of my knee.
(This is chronic pain. I've had it on and off for years. This time, I just got fed up with it.)
MD said it was either a pinched nerve or disk problem.
He had me jump on this prednisone shit. Idk if its working.
He gave me (21) 5mg pills.
He had me take
6 the first day
5 the next
4 the next
3 the next
2 the next (Currently on this day.)
and on the last day 1.
I'm not sure how I'm going to feel when I'm off of it.
All I know is that I don't like this shit. It makes my back twitch. It gives me a heart/chest pain. It also makes me real emotional. (Not extreme, but more than the norm)
I'll be watching a movie and some weird shit will choke me up. It'll make me about ready to bust a tear. :biggums:
Also, my back still hurts. It hasnt gone away.

That's a pretty standard "taper" prescription for prednisone. Hope it helps your back.
Yeah, the emotional rollercoaster is pretty crazy. Immediately post-transplant I was taking 3G a day. Yes, 3G. At one moment I was tearing up watching a news story. The next, I was ready to pack my stuff and leave the hospital because "I feel GREAT!!!".
5mg is my maintenance dose, every day, likely forever. It has no impact on me anymore. But occassionally I'll have to ramp up and do 1G a day for three days straight. I make sure the Netflix is full, because I'll be up all night. Make sure to tell the wife how great she is a hundred times beforehand, and remind her that I'm probably going to suck for the next coule days. And stock the fridge full of fresh veggies for the insatiable hunger.
It's a wonder drug!

I feel my back better, but it's no longer progressing.
On the first day, I took (6) 5mg pills. Thats when the effects were the strongest. I couldnt sleep. lol.
I was awake the whole night thinking to myself how the hell I couldn't sleep when just a few minutes before taking the damn pills, I was fighting to stay awake.
