View Full Version : World's best foods according to ISH
I've always been curious about foods all over the world and I think the best answer to the question "what is your favourite specialty?" is "the next one I'll taste".
I think that the ISH community, which is very diverse, could be a good source for a list of world's delicacies.
So here's what I'd like to do.
1) Make a list of foods. Everyone can nominate one or more entries to this list. We will stop it when we have a decent number, I don't know how many yet.
You can nominate either generic food ("pasta") or specific recipes ("pasta carbonara"), but not individual recipes ("the pasta carbonara they make at Katz Deli").
If you nominate a generic food, it will make the list as is only if a more specific version of it hasn't been nominated. In our example, "pasta carbonara" would be included in the list so "pasta" would not.
2) Rank the foods in the list. When the list is set, we will vote in order to rank the foods. Everyone can vote.
Now, I know this isn't about sex, drugs or rock 'n roll, so most people won't feel like contributing, but hey, why not try.

I recently had a seabass tartare with rice and strawberries. I can't even tell you how good it tasted
There are too many kind of fishes, among other sushi ingredients, to taste.
Here are some that I've ever tried, with my grades:
Otoro - Tuna belly nigiri. It literally melted in my mouth. Other than its price, one of the best food I've ever eaten. A+
Sake - Salmon. The main type of fish served around here since it is a hell lot cheaper than tuna. It is okay but sometimes tastes greasy and slimy. B
White tuna - It is not from real tuna but a type of mackerel. It is very oily and usually served half frozen. It is toro substitute but just can't compare. C
Green dragon roll variants - Western styled avocado maki with either tempura or crab stick inside. Avocado is basically vegetable tuna fat, so it goes well with sushi rice and tastes great. A
Maybe more soon.....
I'm not familiar with this type of food: is this a list of specific versions of sushi? So should I replace "sushi" with these?

Hmm, I wasn't that impressed with the schnitzel I had at a schnitzelhaus in Frankfurt. Maybe it wasn't a good place for it? I don't know. But I'd like to nominate fried potato cubes. Those were the best part of the "schnitzel meal" I had. Scratch that. The best fried potatoes are latkes! Put those bitches up there.
I'm likin the list so far.
I am sure other European posters can add even more specialties (I'm thinking Spain, Netherlands, UK, Balkans, Portugal - one of the thousands way to cook Bacalhau should definitely make the list)

The green stuff in the plate is Callaloo with is also great. I usually have either Callaloo or Ackee and Saltfish, not both but maybe I should try that. Saltfish, which is salted cod fish, goes well with Callaloo as well.
Also, in the place of breadfruit, you can have boiled green bananas, dumplings and various other things.

There's a Japanese market in NJ that once a year has a tuna festival, where they fly in blufin tuna fresh from the boat.

Then they have a guy using a sword-sized sushi knife cut it up and several sushi chefs there making sushi.
It was fantastic and much cheaper than at a restaurant. We had some prepared there and then bought some for home and bought an order of sushi rice from a nearbye restaurant and voila! Simple and easy world clash sushi.

This. Hell there are more opinions about what is "authentic" bbq as there are people who cook it. Here in NC people will have heated arguments as to which is better: Eastern or Western NC style (I like both).

It truly is an amazing entree. When prepared correctly, the contrast in not only the textures but also the temperatures is an experience in itself. That's before your tastebuds dissect the amazing flavors within this gem of a meal.
Unlike traditional ravioli, the exterior of the manti has some crunch to it. The warm meat is tender and seasoned perfectly to compliment the chilled garlic yogurt, which IMO is the most important component of the dish.

I guess that's how they do it up by Dallas, but in and around Austin, which is said to be the best in Texas, they are pretty much no sauce. (http://www.southernbbqtrail.com/texasbbq_intro.shtml). Maybe I should have said central Texas.
Traditional barbecue definitions don't make sense here. "Barbecue is always served with a distinctive sauce," say some. Not in Texas—some of our most famous barbecue joints serve no sauce at all.
A pitmaster should be black though. :D

^^^ also from the link you just posted:
We love to eat it. We love to make it. And we love to argue about it. We have competing theories on the etymology, the definition of the word, and on those characteristics that make it uniquely Texan. We don't agree on the kind of wood, the need for sauce, the cut of meat, or which part of the state does it best. And we all have our favorite pit bosses. But we all agree that non-Texans don't understand it
This thread looked delicious until Rezznor's post.
I've never ate balut myself but I've seen my mom, cousins and other extended family members eat those baby ducks.
Is it actually good? I just can't stomach it!
ive ate it and almost got addicted to it until i found out eating about 5 or 6 of those with beer will give me food poisoning. so i realized my lesson. balut should be considered a appetizer or dessert but not as a main meal.
once your mind can get around the fact that you are essentially eating a chicken fetus, it is very good. i still cant believe how people struggle to eat it on fear factor though.

no they're just short ribs. its the seasoning that makes it so good imo, and the grilling part. i've had kalbi pan fried but its not nearly as good but still okay. its like a garlic, strong soy saucie type taste but that doesn't really do it justice. next time you feel like being adventurous go to a local korean restaurant and order it, its probably the most expensive thing on their menu. just bring a lot of money....i think i've blown on average close to $120~ on this stuff for a party of 4 pretty consistently, but thats one of the nicer restaurants around my way.
most good kalbi restaurants have a grill in the middle of your table where they cut it up and lay it down, and if you request it they'll cook it for you, otherwise you just turn the meats over yourself and eat. it comes with a ton of sides too which should be included.
otherwise you could probably go to a korean grocery around your way that might have it preseasoned, then bring it home and grill it yourself. a lot cheaper this way i figure but not as good.

i've had authentic jerk chicken from some carribean restaurants around my way, 2 different ones to be specific, and good american style jerk chicken from Seacrets in Ocean City, and tbh Seacrets jerk chicken blows authentic jerk away. What i didn't like about authentic jerk chicken was it was in like a stew, and in legs and thigh type pieces. where as Seacrets are like chicken tender breaded fried marinated jerk chicken that is unbelievable ...but they're known for their Jerk chicken so maybe its an unfair comparison.

you mean Pizza with fried shrimps or Fried shimps alone?
Alone. Pepperoni pizza if you want more specific. Also, add penne rustica.

You guys are posting a lot of things and saying that's it like Armenian but it's actually pretty universal, especially in places like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.

Well, Africa is missing and I think Indian food should be represented more.
I'll try to make up for those myself.
It will take me some time to put together all the info needed to set up the voting thread but I think it'll be worth it.
Stay tuned.

i've had authentic jerk chicken from some carribean restaurants around my way, 2 different ones to be specific, and good american style jerk chicken from Seacrets in Ocean City, and tbh Seacrets jerk chicken blows authentic jerk away.
]
Wow, def getting the jerk chicken at Seacrets next time I go to OC, sometime this summer.
That place is like a carnival for adults. One time, we took the boat and docked it. So baller :pimp:
