View Full Version : Is OKC the only arena that prays before the game?
Westbrook0

The Thunder have a different local pastor each game get on the PA system and pray with the audience before each game.
Are there any other NBA teams (or pro teams of any sport for that matter) that do this, or is OKC the only one?

So I guess in OKC the Jewish, Islamics, Atheists, Agnostics, Buddhists, Hindus and other differing faiths/non-faiths who want to enjoy the game have to have it rudely interrupted by an arrogant Christian religious ceremony, is that how they roll in OKC?

It's not a strictly Christian-specific prayer, but it does imply that there is A God and that there is only ONE God, which I agree does alienate people of other faiths (or lacks thereof).

I've been to a lot of games, and every time I've been it's either a Christian-specific person, or someone who who doesn't have a particular religious affiliation but works for some humanitarian project or non-profit type thing.
I haven't ever seen someone give the invocation that was a leader of a different faith ie, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc. But there might be.

i dont think that is a very good metaphor for religious beliefs...
just the only arguement athiest believe.
this is a good read, not sure it really has to do with your post.... sorry, im not trying to start an arguement. this is just a good read
A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"
A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"
"God created everything?" The professor asked.
"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."
The student became quiet and did not answer the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?"
"Of course", replied the professor.
The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"
"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"
The other students snickered at the young man's question.
The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."
The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"
The professor responded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color.
You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."
Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"
Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's Inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."
The professor sat down.

nothing is cold... its particles just aren't moving as fast as other objects and thus is just has less heat than somthing else.

I think this kind of thing went viral on the social media websites, but it's not a true story. People sometimes put too much importance on who says something rather than what is said. This is another case of that ("Einstein said this and he's a smart dude so it must be true and apply to whatever situation we are talking about amirite").
A true scientist knows that science and religion are separate. Science hypotheses are testable and falsifiable, and thus cannot disprove religious beliefs such as the existence of God.
A summary of that whole thing is: uptight science dude hates on religion (oh!), and then religious guy backfires and hates on science (ohhhhhhhh! revenge is sweet and feels good ya?).

Strange world those people live in. Strange.
:biggums:
Don't see what the big deal is. Other major sporting events - like US Open (tennis) in Flushing Meadows, New York always open their event with America the Beautiful (lyrics below) sung by some big name singer. Not to mention the Pledge of Allegiance that's recited in every classroom every school morning in the US. It's their arena - they should have the freedom to do whatever they want. That freedom is what makes America great.
America the Beautiful
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!
O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!
O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

haha, people's concept of God is hilarious.
They are thinking of the Christian Santa God which is kind of disappointing. Because they gave this God human emotions and tried to make "him" more accessible, they have to answer questions about Logic.
I can easily define God for everyone, and I dare you to refute what I say.
If God exist, then God is God. Everything that happens is God. To define something as good or evil, right or wrong, is doing a huge disservice to God. Why must we use our logic or science to define a higher being? It only proves that we will never be able to comprehend the true nature of God.
That is where many people fail. If God exists then whatever God does right. God is in control. If your mother dies of cancer and you blame God you are an imbecile.
This God concept that God owes us anything is equally ridiculous.
I feel I see God. I've felt this from a very young age. I believe that a lot of religious texts hint at this inability of people to align themselves with God. Like in the Bible "He who has ears, let him hear." and all of that shit about sheep.
God does exist. There is no pre-made good or evil, per se. There is power/energy. Our use of this to accomplish goals which would be seen as selfish is being EVIL, our pursuit of the greater good, doing everything we can to help, is GOOD.
Because something happens that we feel is BAD, we put that on God and say GOD IS SUCH A JERK! HE LET MY GRANDMA GET RUN OVER BY A BUS. It's like what??? HOW DID GOD LET THE HOLOCAUST HAPPEN?!
I can't believe people actually think that shit is clever.
And PROVE GOD. GOD will prove GOD to you if you open your mind. If you don't see anything other than what you perceive with your earthly senses, you not evolved. Not to say you are incapable of grasping such an idea, but you have to stop being so ignorant first.

I hate it too. Like dude said, it is generally a Theist prayer without mentioning Jesus persay (I have been to probably over 100 games and think Jesus was explicitly mentioned maybe 2 or 3x, I'm 100% sure they are briefed not to do so), but make no bones about it, nobody up there is a Muslim or Buddhist or anything other than a Christian.

This is an amazingly stupid way of thinking. I can assure that that they are plenty of people with no "love of god in the heart" (whatever that means) that have never committed a single act of evil.
I can just as easily say that the professor is right. God IS evil. Goodness is just the absence of god's evil.
When you have to first create a foundation of false logic to support you point, you really don't have a point to begin with.

No one should have to feel ashamed of their beliefs, however strange they may be to someone else. Freedom to practice religion also is freedom to not practice any
Ipso facto: Freedom to preach a religion before a game = freedom to preach the absence of one.... ?no?
Thats my half-assed logic to justify listening to a religious snoozefest as part of a pre-game ritual. At least if Dawkins curtailed it with something along the lines of "Wasn't that a lovely prayer folks... but keep in mind all of that stuff is probably bullshit so lets all share a moment to celebrate members of the scientific community who actually have done something with their lives to shed light on actual facts about the world we live in". I finish with that the biggest fools on earth are the ones that think they are too smart to believe in God. Copernicus, Newton, Brahe, Pasteur, Galileo... the list goes on of genius believers.
Western civilisation in general are totally oblivious to what is happening spiritually around the world, they make their judgements based on what they have experienced in their culture, which often isnt true christianity.

i dont think that is a very good metaphor for religious beliefs...
just the only arguement athiest believe.
this is a good read, not sure it really has to do with your post.... sorry, im not trying to start an arguement. this is just a good read
The young man's name - Albert Einstein
i dont know if einstein really said that though. i doubt it since his physics professor probly knows that cold, and darkness dont exist.
That has to be the dumbest made up story I've ever read and anybody who'd even consider Einstein being the professor must be borderline retarded.
And the "logical" conclusion that the absence of god = evil is the icing on this pile of shit. :facepalm

You seem like an intelligent person, perhaps you can help me understand some questions that got me removed from several private christian schools a few decades ago? As im a busy person, and im sure you are too, I will just use quick bullet points to shoot these out.
1. Dinosuars. Where are all the goddamn dinos in the bible. Adam and Eve, garden of eden, Evil tempting snakes, no dinosuars. I would read the bible more if jesus was shooting T-Rex with an AK-74u in Genesis. Whose with me?
2. God created heaven and earth in 7 days. God is portrayed as this super awesome, infallible being. Ipso facto, why the need for rest on the 7th day. God had muscle cramps? God needs to be hitting the gym more.
3. Difference between Old testament and new testament god. Why is old testament god such a dick? Why is the new testament god loving and kind? I already know the answere to this one, but I want to gauge what you know.
4. God murdered Ezekiels wife to prove a point...Ezekiel 24:3-14, Ezekiel 24:15-16aa, Ezekiel 24:16a-17, Ezekiel 24:16. God also told Ezekiel, after I kill your wife you arent allowed to mourn, cover your mouth, or eat the bread of man. Not a very nice god today, is he? Why is this?
5. Why would God ask Abraham (who lived 175 years, according to the bible. Thats another story) to slay his only son Issac on an alter, just to prove his faith to god.
6. Jonah and the Whale. Jonah directly went against gods wishes to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh. Went on a ship the opposit direction, got tossed off a boat, and swallowed by a whale until Jonah repent. Jonah stayed in the whale for three days until he repent and was released. Care to give your input on this one?
7. Deuteronomy 17. Basicly it says Stone to DEATH any person: man, woman, or child who has any other faith than Christianity. Whoah! God means business! I hope all these so called real christians out there dont actually read the bible (most of them dont, dont worry).
8. God says kill all the homos in Leviticus 20:13. ""If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." Also in Leviticus, God says you will go do hell for eating Lobster, Shrimp, Bacon, Pork or Ham. Not joking! Also this, "Corinthians 6:9-10 says this:
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God" In other words, nobody gets to go to heaven. Bummer.
9. King David, (from david and goliath) had a gay, sexual relationship with Jonathan, son of King Saul.
1 Samuel 18:1-3
"Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. And Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father's house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself."
Jonathan also makes a covenant with David:
1 Samuel 20:16-17
"So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the LORD require it at the hands of David's enemies." And Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him, because he loved him as he loved his own life."
And later, when Jonathan is killed, David laments his loss with these words:
2 Samuel 1:25-26
“How have the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain on your high places. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was more wonderful than the love of women.”
Anything to say about god not laying the smacketh down on David after reading number 8 above?
10. Noah's Ark. Lined up the animals 2x2. What did the carnivorous animals eat? Speaking of Noah's Ark, apparently only 8 people were aboard that boat. "1 Peter 3:20 Noah; his wife; three sons- Ham, Shem, and Japeth; and their wives." So basicly were all inbread related cousins. The flood wiped out the entire human population. That would explain Blacks, Whites, Yellows and Browns still existing, wouldnt it.
I have several more, some hard ones. But I dont want to overload you. Just want your input on these easy ones first, if willing. Please and thank you.

That has to be the dumbest made up story I've ever read and anybody who'd even consider Einstein being the professor must be borderline retarded.
And the "logical" conclusion that the absence of god = evil is the icing on this pile of shit. :facepalm
The story allegedly depicts Einstein as the witty student, not the professor. Your message is received regardless tho.

That fake Einstein story is typical... That's literally anyone who's a believer has left. I'm gonna make up a pro-god story using a scientist whom any educated (atheist) person would respect... But what religious people don't seem to understand is that non-believers are not believers in non-belief, we're skeptics. It would be quite a story if that tall-tale was true, but it wouldn't change any atheist's position. Einstein is an authority in physics, not in anything else. In fact, even authorities in specific scientific fields are not absolute authorities. Science, by definition, is in the business of skepticism. If it passes the test, its claim to truth simply increases in probability.
Religion (specifically the deliberate application of faith) makes you stupid...and the stupids make religion. It has a damn near perfect inverse correlation with knowledge and intellectual honesty.

It's a pretty disrespectful thing to do considering all their fans are not Christian. Of course, if you asked them to stop, they'd cry that they were being discriminated against... If there's one thing you can count of from Christianity, it's an absolutely astounding level of hypocrisy.

How about a real quote from Albert Einstein?
"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

Fact of the matter is: Religion is a bogus essence if taken completely serious and not just for the purpose of inner solace. Truth is that the main basis of every religion has been proven wrong, and it would be stupid to devote your life to lies and hypocrisy.

[QUOTE=COnDEMnED]You seem like an intelligent person, perhaps you can help me understand some questions that got me removed from several private christian schools a few decades ago?

I'd say its only Christian pastors. It's their team, they can do what they want. If you have a problem dont come to the game. Yet the stadiums are full, so either people support it or dont mind.
One example:

If you are religious you hate someone somewhere. Religion only breeds prejudice, hate, violence, & murder. More people have been killed in the name of some god then any other reason.
Religion is for weak minded people who seek comfort with the masses
Morality is doing what is right regardless of what you are told.
Religion is doing what you are told regardless of what is right.
Prayer is the best way to feel like you're making a difference in the world without actally having to do jack $#!t.    :facepalm
