Of all the different military groups in this modern era (ww2-present), who would be the toughest to beat? Nazi SS? Vietcong? Navyseals? Army Rangers? Spetznaz? Who in your opinion? And why? Take into account training, technology, numbers, and their main strengths/weaknesses.

Personally I would say the British SAS...

The Special Air Service is trained to perform equally well in all the fields listed for the SEALs, but is also trained by MI-5 and MI-6 for in-depth counter-espionage, more so than the SEALs. Physical competency must be of equal stature to the SEALs, to the degree that both special forces work closely together when necessary (Iraq and Afghanistan) and have good camaraderie.

They wear a tan beret, just as the U. S. Army Rangers, and both the SAS and SEALs are trained in knife fighting by experts in Apache Indian knife techniques, as well as Sayoc Kali, Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do, and for the last 3 years or so, the Keysi Fighting Method, made famous by the Chris Nolan “Batman” films.

They have the distinction of being the model on which almost all national commando units are based today, including every other entry on this list.

Basically they have to be able to perform all the duty's of a Navy SEAL, and then more on top of that. Personally I felt this before i ever searched for a ranking, here's a top 10 list.

i'd think the Navy Seals, mostly based on having the best tech. they got sniper rifles that can shoot like a mile away. can't see how anything back in the day comes close since they don't got anywhere near the tech we do now, and the U.S. i think has the best tech in the world.

if it were just the soldiers thats one thing, but factoring in tech and all that its got to be Seals.

On my list SEALS is #2. British SAS is number one because they have to do the same qualification as a SEAL,but they need to do MI-5 and MI-6 training as well. They just have more in depth training is all.

your question and your post dont ask the same thing. your asking who would win in a battle vs your title question asking whos the toughest.

but would you say tech is equal? since i think that carries more weight than the soldiers themselves....

i mean America is kinda a war nation and we put so much money towards military expenses and tech, i'm not sure other countries troops have the toys and support we give them. the top soldiers at least.

if u take technology into account, then this automatically elimates ancient soldiers like the spartans.

but your adjective of "tough" doesn't really make sense.

how "tough" is it really for the modern first world soldiers to attack by safely shooting missiles from 100 miles away?

in mythical text, Spartans fought close-range face to face combat and were outnumbered by 30:1.

that's "tough."

yes, nepalese gurkas are some of the toughest sobs in the world, if you disregard tech.
, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, once famously said[2] about Gurkhas: "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha."

Some of the best funded/best trained are:

SEAL team six (DEVGRU) - recruit straight out of SEAL/other special forces

Delta Force (1st SFOD) - recruits straight out of special forces, at one point US denied it's existance, might still http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Force

Special Activities Division (CIA) - which consequently recruits out of Delta Force http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Activities_Division

Seeing how most of the major military operations are carried out illegally and/or covertly the best operatives are probably under organizations who are not made known to the public.

Caibilles. Guatemala.

Gurkhas are flat out insane in high altitudes.
SAS are the most skilled and the best overall.
Spetnaz are strong and powerful and do undergo psychological training where they are forced to watch sadistic movies until they don't flinch or react emotionally. At All. ANd f*ckin beat each others heads drunk.
Navy Seals have great endurance and are probably the most effective if you wana get sh!t done.

But when it comes to pure, hard resiliency and toughness. I give the nod to these Central Americans. Trained to consume raw flesh and animals in rainforest terrain. Hundreds of degrees, ridiculous humidity, insects the size of your face coming at you during training. Bite the heads off of chickens. Are not allotted more than 3 hours of sleep. Before meal time they are forced to RUN 2 miles, cilmb a rope, do pushups and chin-ups ON TOP of everything else. They DRINK river water with artillery in them and patch themselves up.

No such thing.

Different units, different roles.

It's like playing a strategy game. You can't amass one specific unit throughout the whole game and expect to win. You need to use certain units for certain roles.

Here's an article talking about Delta Force vs. Seal Team Six/Devgru

french foreign legion. Used by lots of countries including the US to do their dirty work. Joining guarantees combat. They have a very high death rate.

Your typical soldier I'd say is the toughest. None of the extra special ops training of the elite forces, yet they are the ones tasked with the heaviest fighting. May not be the most skilled, but I'd go with them.

There is no question in my mind, it's the Gurkhas. They are straight up the hardest soldiers on the planet.
There is a saying that if a Gurkha draws his kukuri (ceremonial knife) then they must draw blood.

Beat taliban to death with his weapon's bipod...

This crazy SOB beheaded a Taliban commander to get positive #ID:eek:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1296136/As-Gurkha-disciplined-beheading-Taliban-Thank-God-side.html

Their success is, in part, down to sheer guts. But it also derives from their reputation. As they found - to their disappointment - in the Falklands War, their fame precedes them.
When British forces embarked for the Falklands in the QE2, the other regiments pointedly lined the upper decks to cheer them aboard

'By the time they arrived on Mount Tumbledown, the Argentinians had seen pictures of Gurkhas sharpening their kukris and read all these stories about them eating their prisoners,' says Major Corrigan. 'So when the Gurkhas actually appeared, all they found were empty trenches.'

Gimme Israel from this list.

Israel still has conscription, this is very important. Conscription doesn't exist anymore in the USA and Britain. In Russia conscription exists, but it's only for men and only 12 months. In Israel both men and women do mandatory military service for an extended period. This ensures that the professional military has an extensive pool to draw their talent from.

Not at all like the USA and Britain, where basically the only people who enter military service are untalented, dumb peasants who have no legitimate future career to pursue.

Secondly: The Israeli military has the most extensive recent military experience. Sure, the other countries have this as well, but none of them have any experience in regards to defense. Bonus points for being surrounded by hostile countries.
