Can I get away with watching the film despite not viewing the aforementioned individual movies?
Of course they'll take your money and let you sit in the theater. Why wouldn't they? Besides, they don't screen people to make sure they have seen the previous ones.

yes, you can watch it after and go ohhhh thats what that was. but only for small specific things that aren't really important

you miss out on some backstory but it's a fairly straight forward movie. i would still recommend watching the prequels though to get a complete picture
You don't need to see any of them really. Especially if you have a working knowledge of the characters. Hulk i would not even recommend, it doesn't feel like part of the sequence anymore.

The Norton one was decent enough. It'd be interesting to see the director's cut on that since I heard there's a fair chunk of footage they cut out to make it a 90 minute action film.

You don't have to watch Hulk and Captain America. But you wouldn't understand about 70% of the shit if you have never seen/read Iron Man and Thor.

You don't need them as the references exclusive to previous movies are very small. If you don't know about these characters and their backgrounds, you might want to watch Thor to get a sense of Loki's relationship to the story.

Iron Man films basically explain S.H.I.E.L.D. (post credit in IM1, and everything IM2).
Captain America explains the Cosmic Cube.
Thor explains the history behind Loki.

you probably dont need to see them but you'll also likely end up a bit confused as to what is motivating the characters.
I recommend seeing them all, even the Hulk movie, if you don't want to have a bunch of jargon thrown at you with little explanation.

isn't the tesseract exactly the same thing as the allspark in transformers?

isn't the tesseract exactly the same thing as the allspark in transformers?
In geometry, the tesseract, also called an 8-cell or regular octachoron or cubic prism, is the four-dimensional analog of the cube. The tesseract is to the cube as the cube is to the square. Just as the surface of the cube consists of 6 square faces, the hypersurface of the tesseract consists of 8 cubical cells. The tesseract is one of the six convex regular 4-polytopes.
A generalization of the cube to dimensions greater than three is called a "hypercube", "n-cube" or "measure polytope". The tesseract is the four-dimensional hypercube, or 4-cube.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "tesseract" was coined and first used in 1888 by Charles Howard Hinton in his book A New Era of Thought, from the Greek τέσσερεις ακτίνες ("four rays"), referring to the four lines from each vertex to other vertices. Some people have called the same figure a tetracube, and also simply a hypercube (although the term hypercube is also used with dimensions greater than 4).http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/55/Tesseract.gif/240px-Tesseract.gif

so it's basically the allspark in that it's an alien cube that is the reason behind the improvement of Earth's technology and alien races are fighting over it to stop the humans from getting it

i'm not sure what powers the allspark has but the tesseract in marvel comics is a boundless energy source and i think it also has powers over reality.

If you have not seen all the lead in movies, you have not paid your fanboy dues so you cannot see the Avengers.

I've only seen:
Thor
IM1
IM2
From what I recall, the Hulk movie wasn't any good. Wouldn't mind seeing Captain America, just haven't yet.
Really wanna go see the Avengers. Study up first?

in terms of continuity it goes
Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Hulk
Marvel One Shots: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer
Marvel One Shots: The Consultant
Thor
Captain America
Both of the one shots are short films released as extras on the Thor and Captain America BluRay that give a bit more info on how minor character Agent Coulson operates.

I've seen the Green Hornet lol. What about Green Lantern? Haven't seen that one.
Not the same thing?

Green Lantern was just plain bad. It had a few brief moments but for the most part it was just a complete waste of time.

Is the 3D worth it? As an example, I thought the 3D in Captain America was pretty worthless and that you wouldn't miss much seeing it in 2D instead.
3d in Thor was crap too , I might try Avengers in imax 3d tho just to give myself a good reason to watch it again

I'd recommend at least watching Thor and Captain America first since those two lead directly into the movie. The rest you can safely skip imo.
Also 3D was decent in Avengers. If you like 3D, see it in 3D.

How does it compare to the animated film?
I really liked the film (series).

Sure you can. I saw the Avengers today and I didn't see Thor or Captain America, and those two are supposed to be the more important films that lead directly to this movie. Wasn't really lost at all. The plot seemed pretty self-explanatory. Its not like these comic book movies are a sea of deep and complex storylines. Captain America got frozen and is now alive, Loki and Thor got mad beef, and now they're fighting over a powerful cube. What's to know?
Avengers was good by the way. Final battle was pretty legit. Nice flick. Now I do want to get around to checking out Thor and Captain movies.

This. I'd also recommend the first Iron Man....
