Bird effed up his pointer finger on his shooting hand the very summer prior to the start of his rookie season. I mean EFFED IT UP. Played his ENTIRE NBA CAREER with that finger.

Characteristically, Bird refused to point the finger at his finger for his substandard performance in Game 4 of this series for the Eastern Conference championship.

"My job is to play basketball, not make excuses," said Bird, who also has been limited because of floating bone chips in his right elbow. "If I was working on a construction job, I wouldn't have stayed home because of it. It didn't hamper my game any."

Hahaha and people try and use "longevity" against him.

Dude played hard and gave his all until he could no longer. No other superstar like him.

AGREED....He got everything he could give out of his body, and risked lifelong physical disability for the game.

Maybe, maybe not. People adjust just like Kobe did with his avulsion fracture. Shot the same %'s he always has.

Bird was that dude, but lot of competitive players played with pain.

Alonzo Mourning basically put his LIFE at risk because he would play regardless of any dink, injury,etc..and just take the anti inflammatory shots/pills.

I'm sure that his kidney problems were made worse by taking these shots and being a "warrior"

Another thing, and any old school Celtic fan can comment, I think Bird's back problems stemmed from bad training staff, HORRIBLE playing surface at the ld Garden, and the fact that Red basically RAN Bird,McHale and Parrish into the ground by playing them so many minutes throughout their careers.

I don't buy that "laying down driveway for mom" theory no matter how many times it's repeated.

LOL as a Celtics fan I can tell you that most of the Celtics' injuries came as a result of how hard they played, not how much the coach played them or how bad the Garden's "playing surface" was.

Mainly Bird. He would dive game to game with no regard for his body.
