View Full Version : Is Kevin Hart a Legend Yet?

I was watchin his newest set, Laugh at my Pain, and thought it was pretty good. But I was thinkin, has he done enough to be considered legendary. I mean lets look at it like this:
Grown Little Man- Legendary set. One of the best of this generation.
Seriously Funny- Really really good, possibly great set. Extrememely quotable.
Laugh at my Pain- Pretty good set. Not his best, but some hilarious moments.
Then he has his scene stealing in pretty much every movie he's ever been in. He has one of the best youtube channels of any comedian (I'm overlooking the fact that his rapping shtick is a poor man's Deshawn Raw Supa Hot Fire bit). He's constantly cracking up the funniest of people in interviews (I like to watch comedians with other comedians. I feel like they try to one up eachother and eventually someone gives in. With Hart someone else is almost always giving in because they're laughin).
And of course we'll always remember the AS Celebrity game. :oldlol:
Here are the things that I think might be keeping him back: the biggest is lack of work. He is still young, he needs to build a bigger resume. He hasn't had his own major movie, even though he's smashed it in everything he's been in (that I've seen). Also his 3rd set was a good 3 notches below his first two. Idk why but I doubt he's running out of material.
What do ya'll think? In my book he's on the cusp of being a legend, but Grown Little Man is already legendary as far as I'm concerned.

Not really referring to style, mostly referring to how overrated and annoying they both are.
Although Jack is more talented then he is.
And you're kinda wrong as well....
Both Jack and he have played that annoying/loser friend, the comedic sidekick in which they overact and want to emphasis everything they do. So actually they're not so different.

Legend? Seriously? Name all the "legends" and say to yourself, "Does he belong with them?" The answer is no. If we're talking just black comedians, Pryor, Murphy, Rock and Chappelle. Hart is just not on their level. He is not even on the Kings of Comedy level as far as success goes. Don't get me wrong, the guy is funny. But I dont think he is a legend.

Dave Chappelle, Louis CK, Chris Rock, Robin Williams. There are many more comedians out there that are better than this guy.
Lewis Black is better. Stephen Colbert is funnier. Eddie Griffin and Martin Laurence are better than this guy.
Kevin Hart is just corny.

See I saw Griffin and Laurence do some sets and didn't laugh more than a few times.
Chappelle, C.K., CR, Williams I will absolutely give you. Granted of the sets I've seen only Chappelle, and Rock have sets better than Grown Little Man.
Lewis Black has real good sets, good books, and does great work on t.v. But his career has been longer, I wouldn't say he's a better comic. Colbert is a different beast.
And thank you for actually listing some guys.
He has great set up, great timing and that leads to great delivery.

I want to like the dude, I do. He seems like a cool dude, but like somebody mentioned, he tries too hard to be funny.
I can't recall ever laughing from anything that I've seen him in. I must confess, my experience with him is limited. So can somebody prove me wrong and post shit that'll make me laugh.
Maybe it's something I've been missing, maybe I haven't seen enough... I dunno... somebody re-introduce me to him. I have no problem in taking back everything I've said about the dude.
But even then... "Legend" is HUGE label.

He's one of the few black comedian that can make stadiums laugh without spewing a million race/stereotype jokes so I guess I give him major credit for that. The subject matter he jokes about is diverse but yet still somewhat personal and just like OP, listening to him in interviews he makes everyone else laugh as well. I've seen him kill on The Breakfast Club, The Foxxhole and other radio shows that are tough environments.
Why is the term legend used so selectively here anyways? You don't have to be a top ten comedian ever to be a legend. Paul Mooney is a legend to me and no one has even uttered the dude's name here. Does that mean that his impact in the comedy game wasn't immense? Hell no. Does that mean that he wasn't funny? Hell no.
Kizzle must be trolling to compare Hart to Mike Epps. I like Epps, but get the f*ck out because you and I both know that isn't an accurate comparison at all. Hart is really carrying the torch for black comedians these days because all of the other major, high level ones have been on a hiatus or retired. That's a lot of pressure but he's got a plan and has been handling it well while making me laugh like a retard.
Props to him.

I'm not a stand-up kinda guy but when my friends show me something, I can't refuse. My friend showed me one set of Katt Williams with Li'l Jon in it and I barely chuckled to be honest. Now, when my friends downloaded Laugh At My Pain and Seriously Funny, damn, I couldn't stop laughing, even if I was watching by myself. I've seen a lot of Katt too on shows like Wild'n Out, and he was easily one of the best there, but I honestly find Kevin Hart loads funnier than him.

Stand up comedy is totaly different in 2012 than it was 20 years ago. Think of the top comics back then and think of the top today? CK and Rock were openning acts and now are the biggest. Seinfield, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, Martin, Kinison hell even Dice Clay. The 80s comedy explosion was still alive. Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Whoopie, Billy Crystal, ect were all huge.

Rock was huge in the 90's. He really hit his stride after getting his HBO show. Chris Tucker went on to become part of the 20 million dollar per movie club.
What did Guy do in the same decade? Starred in four movies? That's crazy.
Like everything else, it takes time to develop a fanbase and perfect your craft. I understand that. Hart has been in the comedy game for a while as well, so what is your point? You are merely stating the obvious and providing irrelevant information that everyone already knows.
Oh and I knew that you were comparing Mike Epps and Hart's popularity because we all know that Hart has way better material. Either way you are still trolling. Saying that their popularity was the same at any point is ridiculous. One person got typecast into funny roles and rode the wave during their peak. The other is Kevin Hart.

Even when dave chappelle does it? as a black dude I love racial commentary by intelligent dudes like Chappelle. Makes living in this world more bearable.
I can understand why it makes white people uncomfortable.

Well, I liked it at first. When Dave hit the scenes are really blew up he came at it in his own hilarious nature, and pulls it off well. Im Puerto Rican so I can relate to it, but after awhile of seeing this for the past 15 years or so, its kind of rubs the raw for me.
