Greek final cancelled after attack on Panathinaikos bus (pics)

17/05/12 20:16

The first game of the Olympiacos-Panathinaikos Greek A1 finals got cancelled after Panathinaikos bus was attacked on its way to SEF arena.

Panathinaikos bus got attacked with stones near the SEF arena, presumably by Olympiacos fans.

The bus sustained some damages, but the worst thing was the broken glass which injured Stratos Perperoglou and Steven Smith, who were taken to the hospital.

Panathinaikos eventually arrived to SEF, but missing two of their players who are expected to be there soon. However sources from within the Greek League say that a final decision to postpone the game has been taken with the approval of state ministries and the police.

The General Secretary of Sports Ministry of Greece will announce new safety measures tomorrow to be enforced during the A1 finals, possibly allowing only minors to attend the games.

When is game going to be played than ?

I don't know. They have to decide if the games at SEF will be played with an empty arena, or if only people under 17 will be allowed in the arena.

It's a real shame for Olympiacos. After they won the Euroleague, they just lost their home court advantage in the Greek League, because of some idiot hooligans. The main goal for them, by like 80%, is winning the Greek League, by beating Panathinaikos.

Euroleague is a minor thing for them, by comparison in importance.

Now, they just totally lost home court advantage for all 3 home games.

The games in SEF are going to suck now, with either an empty arena, or only maybe 3,000 to 4,000 youth fans allowed in.

Game 1 of the finals has been re-scheduled for Monday May 21st. It will take place at 19:00 hours (7 P.M.) Athens time at SEF.

The bad news is that Panathinaikos hooligans are promising "deaths" in retaliation for this.

It seems that Olympiacos hooligans are saying that the PAO team bus was attacked in retaliation for what happened at the Final Four in Istanbul, where some PAO hooligans attacked some Olympiacos supporters, as their bus arrived, and some were severely beaten.

For game 1 of the finals, at SEF (Olympiacos home arena), there will be,

800 armed riot police inside the arena
attack police dogs

and

a retractable net that can be dropped down from the rafters over the stands to contain the fans if they try to enter onto the court...........

:wtf:

Dimitrios Katsivelis will replace the injured Acie Law for Olympiacos.

In Serbia when there is a basketball game between Partizan and Red star only people of home team that have season tickets are allowed , so its only around 1500 people in arena , I think , and not many hooligans . On last derby there was lot of Red Star fans , they insulted Macvan and if I remember corectly they had hit Katic with something ( not sure aboute this ) and that was the worst thing that happend this year when these teams played so I think its safe to say that hooligans were stoped . Greeks should do the same if they dont want that games are like battlefield .

Can you imagine a 40 minute game of just Sloukas and Katsivelis at point guard against PAO? Grinder is a moron. Spanoulis is controlling the entire tempo and rhythm of the game and making all the right decisions for his team.

He is calling all the plays. Grinder continues his box score watching expertise.

Anyway, Olympiacos should have gotten the triple this year. The refs robbed them of the Greek Cup. I'm a actually disappointed of that, event though I am a PAO fan. Honestly, this Olympiacos is the best team I've ever seen in Europe.

They deserved to get the triple.

I don't think PAO has any chance at this. The good news though is that supposedly they are about to sign Pappas to a big 3 year contract. So that should help for next season.

Yep. They've got a great supporting cast. Printezis has been excellent and without him, they would have had no chance in EL. Also shows how much Spanoulis has been overrated by the media and his fans.

PAO will bounce back I'm sure. The series is far from over.

A lot of players are important in OLY . Papanikolau , Spanoulis , Printezis , Hines , Dorsey , Keselj , Sloukas , Antic , Gecevicius everyone is has their role and everyone deserves the same amount of credit for winning Euroleague . PAO is going to lose this series , I said from beging of the season that OLY can win Greek league and now when they won EL they have bigger confidence than PAO and are going to win it easier than I thought at first .

You mean 2010 Barca.

Best teams ever in Europe were 2009 PAO and Split of early 90s.

This Oly team is better than them.

2010 Barca got swept by Baskonia, therefore, not the best team ever. Although they were close. Their point guard position was extremely weak though.

CSKA didn't win Euroleague. Sorry, but they are not the best team ever without winning Euroleague. Besides, the 2005 CSKA team, which also didn't win Euroleague is the best team ever to not win it. That team would beat this year's CSKA.

You also guaranteed that Olympiacos would beat PAO when Childress and Kleiza were there. Like I told you then, they had NO chance in hell.

You also guaranteed that Olympiacos of 2010 would beat Barca in the finals. Again, I told you were an idiot. Never once do you ever admit you are wrong.

Just like now, you are wrong as usual. Olympiacos will win the series, even with the refs against them.

You never watch these games, you just look at box scores.

You guaranteed before the season that Olympiacos could not make the Top 16.

You also said that Printezis was a scrub and "horrible" when I said he would be on Greece's team in 2012. And you said Greece was desperate if a scrub like him would be selected. There is no end to your trolling and hypocrisy.

Gecevicius isn't important. Keselj is barely a factor for them. They are both very talented players, but they deserve very minimal credit. Keselj did hit that huge 3 during their rally against CSKA though. Mantzaris is way more important than either of them to Olympiacos.

But Keselj and Gecevicius spent half the year not even playing. They are both good players though, especially Keselj. Law also helped Olympiacos a lot in the Top 16. I know you don't like him, which is understandable due to how he played with Partizan, but you have to admit that he was good in the Top 16.

He was terrible against Barca though. I won't count his bad game against CSKA because he was injured.

He's too injury prone though, even though I think he can develop a nice place in Euroleague. All these injuries are causing problems. He missed the Greek Cup final, got hurt during the Euroleague semifinal, is injured now during the Greek League Finals. He has to be more durable than that.

They spent half of the season not playing when everyone said that OLY might not even make top 8 but when they started playing they ended up winning EL ( ofcourse I m not saying they were the ones that made a diffrence but they are one of them ) . Law also got hurt in Partizan and didnt play against Maccabi , he rejected injection that would allow him to play . Reason I dont like Law isnt because he played bad , its not his fault he isnt good enough but he didnt even try . He was allowed to go to USA around New Year and than he refused to come back to Partizan . And before F4 he said that Ivkovic is great coach that showed him his role something that they didnt do in Partizan , than he said that its great to play with Spanoulis because he is great leader and Partizan didnt have a leader . If he didnt get that he was supoused to be player that will be the leader than that says something aboute his IQ but with things he said he also disrespected his old coach and teammeats .

This is how it always is in the Greek Finals. Diamantidis owns the refs. He's the D-Whistle of Europe.

Anyway, I find it really odd that Ivkovic is using Katsivelis instead of Pelekanos. Just that couple minutes when Katsivelis was in was probably the difference in the game.

Good news so far for the Greek national team though. Kaimakoglou continues to look like he finally developed as a player and Perperoglou finally looks healthy again. Greece NT is going to have quite a lot of options, even with all the injuries and refusals.

Yep. They even removed more tiers of seating around the court to keep the fans away.

They already had removed from 15,000 seats (what it used to be) down to 13,000 seats, what it has been in recent years, and for this year up until now. So that the fans are further from the court.

But now, for the Greek League Finals, they removed even more seats, and now it is down to 12,200 seats. Just so the fans can be as far as possible from the court for, "safety reasons".

It's sad.

Yes, they have 3,500 seats around the court that they have taken out. And of course, the net. The problem is that they do both of these things because of all the times that the fans have stormed the court.

Honestly, the refs always help PAO when they play Olympiacos. It's not as much as they used to do though. They seem a bit restrained since Olympiacos won Euroleague.

Olympiacos 38 - Panathinaikos 36 at halftime.

All hell might break loose if Olympiacos wins the Greek Championship at OAKA.......

Finals, Game 5: Olympiacos - Panathinaikos 82-76 (3-2)

Olympiakos won the championship title in Greece thanks to 82-76 home victory against PAO in decisive Game Five of the Playoff Finals. PAO is dethroned after 9 years and this is the first championship title for Olympiakos since 1997. The Reds already won the Euroleague title earlier this season, while PAO celebrated in Greek Cup.
Panathinaikos trailed by 12 points at halftime and as many as 14 after three quarters before a 20-12 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 76-82 at the end of the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Panathinaikos helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Vassilis Spanoulis (193-82, agency: Beo Basket) orchestrated the victory by scoring 24 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Georgios Printezis (206-85, agency: FCM) contributed with 14 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) answered with 17 points and Dimitris Diamantidis (196-80) added 13 points and 5 assists in the effort for Panathinaikos. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in this decisive game.
Olympiakos was the regular season champion in Greece with almost perfect 23-1 record. They eliminated PAOK in the Quarterfinals (2-0) and Panionios in the Semis (3-0). Olympiakos was the Greek league champion in 49, 60, 76, 78, 93, 94, 95, 96 and 97. Of course, they added another trophy tonight. PAO was No.1 in the country in 46, 47, 50, 51, 54, 61, 62, 67, 69, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 80, 81, 82, 84, 98, 99, 00, 01, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 and 11.

Olympiacos: V.Spanoulis 24+2ast, G.Printezis 14+7reb, A.Law 10+2ast, K.Papanikolaou 8+7reb+1ast, M.Keselj 5+3reb, J.Dorsey 4+4reb
Panathinaikos: N.Calathes 17+4reb+2ast, D.Diamantidis 13+3reb+5ast, S.Perperoglou 11+8reb+1ast, K.Kaimakoglou 10+3reb+1ast, M.Batiste 7+5reb, A.Maric 6+3reb

Obradovic isnt head coach of PAO anymore .

Obradovic is a sissy. He loses to Olympiacos one time and he bails.

At some press conference they asked him now if he made the right decision in refusing to pay Spanoulis what he wanted and instead let him go to Olympiacos.......and he just got this crazy mad as hell look on his face and swore and stormed out of there.

He needs to learn some humility and to become a better loser.

I am sure that coaches all over are lining up to take PAO's team with the current budget and the huge salary that Obradovic had. But Obradovic is acting like he was being mistreated or something. He's a douche bag.

I dont know they just said site . I just heard Ivkovic left OLY , reason is he wants to give his full atention to NT. I also heard that Papaloukas said he is going to play in Europe next season and then he will go to the NBA . I know you said that NBA scouts liked Keselj so I thought I should share this , in one interview he said he doesnt follow NBA and that he thinks European basketball is more interesting but he would like to play in NBA to se how its like . Dalas is interested in Law ( and Calathes ) so it look like OLY is going to fall apart in coming years .

You mean Papanikoloau right? Supposedly, Printezis might join the Knicks also, and Dorsey the Rockets.

I don't think Olympiacos will have any problems though, unless the Greek election causes problems. If the election keeps the euro, then the owners want a 20 million euro budget.

Since Vasilopoulos and Ivkovic's huge salaries will come out of that, they will actually have more money to sign players than they did last summer.

But, if the Greek election does not lead to keeping the euro, then they will cut the budget. I guess in that case, Spanoulis will have to go to Russia, Turkey, NBA - somewhere like that to get his money.

Yes Papanikolau , my bad . PAO and OLY will have problems because thay cant find good coaches like Ivkovic and Obradovic . Who is going to take their place ?
