Name a country (outside of the United States) and name the best basketball players ever from that country.
And, talk about their style of play and what made them good. And anything else you can think of

Germany- Dirk Nowitski. Absolute beast, can shoot outside and drive inside and rebound as well.
China- Yao Ming. While people critisize him he still is 7'6''.
Spain- Pao Gasol. 7 footer with a smooth inside game.
Italy- Andrea Bargnani. Will prove in time he belongs with the other international greats.
Canada- Steve Nash. Quick and makes others better.
Argentina- Manu Ginuobli. Great scorer and does everything well.

1.The old Yugoslavia: Drazen Petrovic. He was very competitive and had an amazing work ethic. He was probably the most skilled player Europe have seen. Great shooter who always tried hard to win. Definitely a special player. We miss you Drazen.
2.Brazil: Oscar Schmidt Becerra. This guy averaged over 30ppg in Brazilian league at almost 40. The best 3point shooter ever, although he was drafted by the Nets, he kept playing in Brazil and went to Spain, where he amazed with his scoring abilities.
3.Spain:Pau Gasol. Everything has already been said about him.
4.South Korea: Ha Seung Jin. He can scare opponents by just getting in front of them.:D

Italy- Andrea Bargnani. Will prove in time he belongs with the other international greats.
Let's wait about 10 years before we give such a title to a youngster.
Respect to Dino Meneghin.
Greece: Nikos Galis (incredible scorer and passer, though only 6-0 tall, he was taking it to the hoop rather than shoot 3's).
Puerto Rico: Jose Ortiz (played for the Jazz in a few games).
Israel: Miki Bercovic or Doron Jamchi (spelling?).
Philippines: Ramon Fernandez
USSR: Sabonis, followed by Sergei Belov, the "Russian Jerry West".

Brazil-Oscar Schmidt
a true bad boy for the 80s
Yugo (and its subdivided present) - Drazen
he would have never beyotched out with a lead in the fourth quarter and folded the tent the way Vlade and Peja did in Sacto against the Hollywood Flakers a few years back.
France - F. Weis
This one is actually a joke, but if he never balled, Vince would have never jumped over him in Sydney and we all would have been robbed of the most amazing bball highlight of our lifetime.

Canada
Active:
Steve Nash-Phoenix Suns: Back-2-back MVP's; best PG in the L right now; MVP of 2003 Olympic Qualifiers
Jamaal Magloire-Milwaukee Bucks: One of three current Canadians in the L; former all-star; consistant solid performer
Denham Brown-Seattle SuperSonics: The future of Canada basketball; great performer throughout his 4 years at UConn; solid performer on the international scene for years
Carl English: Had a great college career at Hawaii; left school with a year of eligibility remaining to enter draft; projected late second rounder, but went undrafted; had pre-season stint with the Pacers in '03 and was waived; pre-season with Sonics in '04 and was waived; summer league with Cavaliers in '05; played a couple seasons in the NBDL; solid performer on the international scene with team Canada; currently playing overseas
Juan Mendez: Great college career at Niagra; entered 2005 NBA draft; was projected late second round but went undrafted; Canada's division 1 leading scorer; performs good on the international scene with team Canada; currently playing professionally overseas
Joey Vicary: (I was practiced with him 3 years ago, so I personally know how good he is); 1988-89 CIS / CIAU Final 8 - MVP, 1989-90, 1990-91 First Team All-Canadian, 1989-90 CIS / CIAU Final 8 - Tournament All-Star, 1988-89, 1987-88 GPAC First Team All-Star; possibly one of the best Canadian performers ever in the professionals overseas; amazing career with team Canada

Yeah Kirk Penny is good, great shooter hope he gets some pt in the NBA eventually. Tait is deffinately a star for the future, too bad he shattered his wrist. He coached me for a few sessions last year in Auckland, hes a real good guy, and a damn quick first step.

i don't think he would thrive in the nba. he was a scoring machine with limitless range, but he would be a defensive liability and have some problems with the speed of the game. in the best scenario, he'd be like peja. i think he'd be a shooting specialist like, say, kyle korver.
leandro barbosa would definately challenge him for this spot if basketball was more popular in brazil nowadays. an international achievement (like oscar's outstanding 87' panam games) wouldn't hurt, either.

I agree Taits going to be key for NZ in the future. It would be good if Penney got a NBA contract, I can't see Marks gettin too much playin time. How bout Pero Cameron for one of NZs greats? Maybe not so much these days but a few years back at the world champs he was the only non nba player named in the tournament first team.

It is not a fact actually. I rate Sean Marks higher then penney, and possible phil jones is close to penney. Tait may have gotten alot of pt for NZ but he had a shattered wrist, so saying he is not the starting point guard it stupid becuase he hasn't played in the latest series.
I do agree though that west is alot better then Tait.

Marks is just big, he has no skills, just a banger to fill up the last few spots on the roster. Every team needs a few. He was like the 6th best NZ player at the Olympics.

For a big player he actually does have skills. Im not sure how much you've seen him play. At the olympics he didn't play too much because hes was being a ***** trying to protect himself for the NBA. He was deffinately one of our best players, but now that hes pulled out of international ball im not too sure.

Internationally he led Seton Hall to the NCAA Final.
Internationally he played 280 games for Australia.
Internationally he captained the Boomers from 1994-2000.
Internationally named player of the year 1990, 1994-96 and 1998.
Internationally named in FIBA's 50 greatest players.
Internationally is the top all time scorer in Olympic history.

Only thing about lindsay is his jumper is poos. its like not even a proper action. he comes from the side all funny but i like his ball handling skills. His shot may not be good but at least its better than Dickels ugly shot, its like flung from behind his head and its not even consistant... :wtf:
but new zealand PGs all have really good ball handling skills

I'll say. When he played for the Breakers he was a bit dissapointing, 30-40 pts one game and then <10 the next 5 or 6 games. He had a good stint in the recent NZ NBL and has carried that form on so far. Well done Phil....:D

In the Philippines, the current best player is Danny Seigle.
danny seigle would probably be the best in terms of size and match ups, but james yap is currently the best player in the philippines. has an outside shot, has hops and hang time, and most importantly is good in the clutch.if only he was about 6'5" he'd be better than danny seigle.

easy choice here: Hall of Famer Dino Meneghin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dino_Meneghin) Only average offensively, not an exceptional defender. What made him so good was his competitiveness: he never backed down, he never accepted defeat. Opponents were SCARED to face him

Germany:
Det Schrempf - born in Leverkusen, played ball there until he was 15, then moved to Washington, played hs ball and at U of Washington.
Mike Jackel - Of Canadian origin, he was leaps and bounds better than any other wing in the german bundesliga. Still their all time scoring leader.
Chris Welp - Went to college together with Schrempf and spent some uneventful years in the NBA. Scored the deciding basket in the 1993 european championship final vs Russia.
Norbert Thimm - Legendary center of the 70ies. A legit 7 footer he played for the Leverkusen bundesliga team and later moved on to play for Real Madrid. He apparently had offers from NBA teams as well but never made this step.
Dirk Nowitzki - nothing to say here most people dont know anyways.

09-20-2006, 05:33 PM
Greece- I think it's a tossup between C/PF's Sofokils Schortsanitis and Theodoris Popoloukas. Popoloukas was the only non-NBA player to make the woirlds allstar team. I think in a few shot years, Schortsanitis will be better because he has a better body and is younger and has a huge upside. Keep an eye out for Schortsanitis in the future.
Brazil- Many people would say Nene, but I'd say Leandro Barbosa. Nene's got a lot of potential, but is hurt way to often to develop it. Barbosa was a major steal in the draft and is a key part of the Suns.
Argentina- Obviously, Manu Ginobili is the best right now, and probably will be for a long time. Keep an eye on Andres Nocioni though. Last year, at times, he was the Bulls' best player. He's still young and developing, and I wouldn't be suprised if he passes Manu later on in his career!

yeah drazen was much better but not as good as sabonis, his level is something totally different, if him and any of the nba great centers faced each other in their primes, he would make them look like *****es
I was refering to croatian players.Sabonis and Petrovic are two of the top 5 players ever to come out of europe.
for me petrovic, gallis, epi, nowitzki, sabonis is my best of all time 5.

what country and nationality are we talking about?it would be interesting to see his shooting percentages and turnovers, its all very good scoring 33 points but if its on 11 out of 39 shooting maybe 3 out of 11 3s and 2 out of 6 free throws then its not a great indication, and as for assists if he has 3 but turned the ball over 6 times?so yeah stats look good but incomplete, not saying the guy did have the awful stats i have mentioned but it could be.

and probably not in the whole South America either. Oscar is one of my faves ever, with Sabonis, Petrovic, Magic and Sir Charles Barkley.

He is from the Philippines, and Mark Caguioa is the best individual performer in the Fiesta Conference after leading the Locals in scoring in the 2007-08 Season.
According to the recent rumors, Sydney Kings was really impressed with his performance, and they offered him a contract to play for their team, but unfortunately the NBL terminates the license of the King's after the club’s ownership failed to remedy outstanding player payments outlined in a default notice issued to the club.

I think Mark Caguioa reminds me of 2008 NBA Draft prospect Lester Hudson, he was a great scorer back in College, but i do not think he will be a lottery pick in the draft after the Scouts measured him at 5-11

Not the greatest ever.
Having said that, he'd start on my team 10 times out of 10.
I would pick him over Gaze, Heal, Maher etc.

flavio was the brazilian football player! lol jean jaques conceicao i think. he was only a 1.97m and played 4 and 5! played for benfica in the european cup.Obviously they got hammered in most games.
Brazilian of all time has got to be Oscar Schmidt,he will never be taken of that spot,it's near impossible.
