How about this IRONY...
Former star center bails out on the team, only to return as manager, and then trades the new star center to that same team!

I love that a guy who left what was going to be a dynasty (injuries were out of the blue), for no reason other than wanting the glitz, gets so much love in Orlando...from the ownership.

His retirement press conference was there. That's hilarious.

talking about sports with no pressure or repercussions is WAY different than working a key job for a sports franchise...just ask Steve Kerr.

don't let the well tailored suits and doctorate fool you, Shaq is not the guy you want running your team.

hahah that would be hilarious. however shaq is no way fit to make basketball decisions right now. i struggle to think how a competent nba organization can hire him for his ability or lack thereof to negotiate trades and scout talent. but then again, the magic organization has been anything but competent the last few years or so

At least Otis had some smarts. Shaq has none.

First move would be firing nick anderson for choking. Anyways theyd have pat ewing and shaq(assuming hes willing to aside from GM'ing) to coach dwight if kept. Nice.

2nd time hearing someone say this..last guy was from Arizona

He said that there were ownership issues but that Kerr was good GM

from the outside, looked like he was in over his head...and team regressed under him ....GMs don't get to make excuses.

omg, this is golden in so many ways. the obvious being that shaq isn't fond of dwight and has a huge hard-on for bynum. let us also remember the team he put together for the all-star challenge though. so much scatter shot :lol

do it, orlando. for entertainment purposes. i want to see shaq gut the roster to get javale mcgeeeee or udonis haslem. idk, shaq doesn't strike me as being a good talent scout that has GM skills to remain calm under fire and mix and match skillsets

I'm actually from Oregon, but anyway...

I look at the team he left. That was a very good team with a lot of chemistry. Kerr made some bad moves, but he got the Steve Nash era Suns as close to the Finals as anyone.

Kerr wasn't perfect, but he was far from bad. He valued the right things and looked to build a team the right way.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him get another shot down the road.

Can you say PR move?

Trying to keep Dwight at all costs.

What is the next step? FO/Ownership selling their second daughter to keep Dwight in Orlando

05-23-2012, 10:25 PM
If Orlando is trying to keep Howard, why would they even consider this? Why would he want to work for someone that constantly dogged him on air? And wouldn't Shaq just push to trade him for Bynum, maybe even just purely off ego?

(e)
05-23-2012, 10:44 PM
Yeah, Dwight would be gone lol

I have no doubt that he could put together an okay basketball team, he'd definitely do better than MJ. But honestly, if you were going to try to take someone from TNT, I'd be offering Charles Barkley a job before Shaq.

Hold up, I always thought Shaq and Dwight always had tension between eachother. They were always chirping eachother for years.

This would be great though, get Shaq off TNT

Obviously a marketing ploy, or an attempt to stir up positive PR for the team and its management in light of the Dwight/Stan/Otis debacle. Shaq is perceived as a silly, likable guy... just not sure how high-ups construe that as something that translates well to a general manager job. Maybe he'll just be a mouthpiece for the organization, while other folks run the show behind the scenes. Just pay Shaq a nice sum every year to speak at signing press conferences, sit in the crowd at games and release statements to the media.

If that's the situation, all in all, it wouldn't be half bad. Plus it runs damage control on whatever residual hard feelings may still exist between Shaq and Orlando. Maybe that jersey gets raised after all..?

I don't think anybody expects Shaq to seriously deliver when it comes to running a team. He's just a brand name.

ILLsmak
05-24-2012, 12:52 AM
People would listen to Shaq at least. I am not sure if he knows what's good or bad or can scout talent, but I do think that he can make people respect his decisions.

So if people give him the decisions to make, and he's like WUT U GOT TO SAY ABOUT IT?

It'll work out fine.

Who knows. I think it'd be fun. I don't know why Shaq would want to be with them though.

Imagine Shaq as GM Sloan as coach.

Sure bud. Shaq isn't going to keep Dwight and he knows better than to keep a player who's going to walk at the end of next season.
And btw, Shaq and Dwight don't like each other. Do you not understand how that factors into the equation of bringing in Shaq? Dwight is a goner regardless.

shaq had a great career but his lack of discipline and his ego issues kept him from realizing his potential and winning more rings.

doesn't have the track record for strong work ethic that it takes to succeed in the behind the scenes nuts and bolts front office work.

shaq was able to half ass his way to a hof playing career because of his physical tools and abilities, can't sleepwalk through gm duties.

05-24-2012, 11:43 AM
Former star players are a better fit then a regular GM. Just look at Larry Bird. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for MJ, but star players see talent differently then normal GM's. Shaq is a huge profile, high character person, and combine that with his eye for talent, and he can turn out to be a great GM. I don't think he will get the job though because the Magic want proven resumes. Since Shaq has never been in a GM field before, it might be hard to convince DeVos to accept him. Oh and in addition to that, let's factor in when Shaq bolted out of the Magic's doors over a decade ago.:oldlol:

He displays very little personal discipline. He's involved in a dozen different things at one time, and would not devote all of this attention to the job.

He wouldn't be respected by other GMs, and with good reason.

Didn't Shaq leave them high and dry when he signed with the Lakers as a free agent? I'd think that they would dislike him in Orlando, don't they?
