I love both of them, but Terminator 2 had some good laughs unlike the first Terminator. Also, the special effects were amazing for their time and still hold strong today. The edge goes to Terminator 2.

Such a hard question. When I was younger, I woulda said T2.
I actually think Terminator is the superior flick. Such incredible mood and atmosphere. Brilliant writing. Michael Biehn is so intense and badass, pretty believable considering his character's arc.
Arnold is extremely menacing and I think even a better antagonist than the T-1000. I always saw T1 more as a horror film with sci-fi story.
James Cameron killed it and it's what started a cultural phenomenon. Amazing films that are a huge part of my childhood and film life.

I definitely respect that. I prefer the mood of the 2nd movie though. You're right, the first is horror scary in some respects with the way things are choreographed. But as a kid, the apocalyptic tone in T2 was scarier. That dream Sarah Conner has where she's burned alive while clinging to the fence nearly scarred me for life. That and a lot of other aspects of T2 left a "We're all gonna die tomorrow" tone on me as a kid as opposed to a "The Terminator's gonna get 'em!" feel the original movie provided.
All things considered, Terminator 2 is my selection.

Yep, plus there was no damn kid co-stars, or moments going overboard trying to "pull at your heart strings". Robert Patrick was a bad muthaf@cka in T2 though.

Funny this topic was brought up, as I've been watching the series again in my spare time.
Definitely close. You can't go wrong with either choice as their both masterpieces, but "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" would be my choice.
Though, I would like to know what it would be like if "The Terminator" got the same budget as it's sequel (at the time, it was the most expensive movie ever made).

I love both movies but I'm gonna with T1 because T1 is the superior movie, even though many say T2 is. Arnold Schwarzenegger's played his role as The Terminator greatly. The guy was just so relentless, evil, coldblooded, whatever you wanna call it and that's one of his best performance and had me
In my opinion, the directors of T2 should've brought him back as a villain. After all he's supposed to be a Terminator for ****s' sake, why is the guy shooting people in their knees and not Terminating them? Anyway, T2 is still a Great movie, I just think they f*cked up by not bringing Arnold back as a villain.
Look at this scene mfer...

Yea trust me, I used to keep myself awake for hours thinking about time travel paradoxes and the story of man vs. machine. T2 had incredible future war scenes. U got a taste of the future but still left some mystery about the whole thing.
T2 is still stunning. Still amazing to this day. The ending is badass/emotional/ poetic, etc. It builds awesome from the get go. Builds up like no other from the beginning and has some of the most memorable and action packed scenes in cinema history.
The Terminator series has the smartest writing and most emotionally evocative themes of any action/sci fi movies imo.

Terminator 2 by a good amount.
Terminator 1 had too much of an 80s vibe and although I'd say it's funner and the original, it just doesn't measure up to the f*cking Legend T2.
Honestly, it's akin to Dark Knight vs. Avengers for me.
T2 had so much depth to it. Had a seemingly invincible, creepy villain.. the very definition of ephemeralization with the liquid Terminator.. How the hell do you beat something so much more lightweight and evolved... like a Mac vs. a clunky Pentium 2 processor... but Arnie's heroics miraculously stood against it. The scientific background. It literally had everything sexy in...humor, teenage rebellion, masculine power, clever hiding ways, great fight scenes, brilliant strategic maneuvering.. The last stand like the Alamo. The unlikely alliances. The pain and struggle you felt with Sarah.
What a film. God Bless.

This is a great post and commentary. However, I felt more of a pain and struggle with Reese considering all he went thru if his only interpretation of the world since birth was survival and suffering.
I also agree about the whole 80s thing with the first but don't act as if that scene in Tech Noir isn't classic! :lol I still geek out at the dude wearing the diagonal black and white club outfit. So ghey. It adds a little charm to the picture despite the Special Effects being outdated and the vehicles being very obsolete.
P.S. I'm gunna let you guys in on my personal world a little.

Yup, T2 was a lot deeper. The film questioned life, human nature, and the future on a much deeper and meaningful level. Everything was done so well. Even stuff like the music and the opening scene with the playground on fire... still etched in my memory. Character development was incredible for all the major characters including Arnold.
T1 had a love story but i didn't really care for it when i was a kid, nor would i now
T2 easily for me. T1000 ftw.
T2 is better IMO. T1 is great at what it is but T2 just has so much more depth. Speaking of great chase movies... T1, T2, or No Country for Old Men? :confusedshrug:

Terminator. Nothing will beat the cop station scene.

Only because you're not giving it much though. Both are chase movies about being pursued by an "inhuman" killer out to fulfill a mission. Both Sarah Connor and Llewelyn Moss are victims of fate. Sarah Connor in giving birth to John Connor and Llewelyn Moss stumbling upon a satchel full of money. Both the Terminator and Sigur can't be reasoned with. There are actually quite a few parallels between the films, you just have to look past the surface.

Terminator 1 one for me by a hair. I find it more re-watchable. It's shorter than T2 and filled with intensity throughout. Arnold's terminator is the scariest and most relentless of them all.

Especially when you see it for the first time. T1 had an "atmosphere" of a horror movie with the premise of a Sci-Fi movie. T2 felt more like a movie based off of a comic to me. Can't put my finger on it, but there just wasn't enough tension in it compared to T1. And again, kids in movies with mostly adults usually f@ck up the flow of the movie for me.

T2 Why? Superior Environment. More memorable, formidable, touching music... drums clashing in the Theme really stressed urgency. Cooler arcade chasing scene, end location boss battle, Alamo station. Cooler cinematography. Superior Character Development. Arnie is much more natural a big lovable hero, and T2 is more a robotic killer than Arnie is in T1. Weapons.

Terminator 2 is a top 5 sequel off all time across all movies. It's one of the few sequels at least in my mind that was better than the original. Then they ****ed up the whole franchise starting with T3 then afterwards. They've had what? Five or six different actors now play John Conner over the course of 5 movies? I can't remember if they had a short clip of John Conner in the first one in the future or if it was all Kyle Reese clips. And they've CGI'd Arnold on a Terminator face twice now. The Terminator franchise is just a joke now.
