wow... this is pretty amazing, even for serena. she was the hottest woman player on tour but just had one of the biggest tennis meltdowns of all time.
apparently she was up 5-1 in a tie-break, already ahead a set in her first round match, and only had to win two points to put it away. instead she misjudged a line call, lost the point, and completely fell apart... even worse than ever before. cried in to her towel during the set break and then got smoked in the third set.
...
side note- looks like this is the official site (tennis channel) to watch live matches on the internet:
http://www.b2livetv.com/flashplayer/2012fo.html
not sure if rolandgarros.com is doing that, for some reason. when i tried earlier it looked like all they offered were highlight videos.

Watched the third set. She was down 5-0, but actually came back to 5-3 and had I think 6-7 break points to go back on serve, but couldn't finish the job. The French opponent (can't remember spelling so not gonna try lol) also was quite lousy in that game. It took her 8 (ya, you read right) match points on her serve to finally win.

Sucks that my boy Milos got stuck in Nadal's quarter, but him vs Monaco in rd 3 should be a good test.
Nadal kinda got a nice draw with no Fed/Djok/Berdych/Delpo in his half and Soderling being out still. Not like it matters as he's such a force at the FO.

those sound like good things to me. the way tennis was for most of its existence... before the rackets got so insanely light and powerful. nowadays serve and volley isn't much of a strategy anymore, which kind of takes away half the fun. i mean, sometimes more power is not always a good thing.

I agree, and disagree. Those attributes are important, but I prefer diversity. Guys like Isner and Roddick literally have NO CHANCE of ever winning the French Open. I'm surprised if either even makes it out of the first round... which I don't think either did. You could say that they are being punished for their weaknesses, but playing on hard and grass courts doesn't remove the effectiveness of stamina, speed, and return-game like clay does to big servers and power-hitters.

pretty much.
i may be biased, however. i'm a big fan of the average joe who works his ass off to get to an elite level... improving every single area of his game because he absolutely has to. call it the steve nash effect, or something.
the americans always suck at the clay. but i think its a great surface. its entertaining to see the slides and slower play. obviously the speed of the court is the slowest of all 4 majors (even that is debatable with the way they have slowed W, USO and AO), its a lot more fun to watch upsets occur on clay.

that's also how i feel. i like rafael on a personal level, but dislike the hyperspin-game as a way to win matches. yet the hyperspin-game is probably how nadal is going to destroy roger or novak in the finals.
i hate to say this, but tennis would have been better without the spanish game. the rewards should have always gone towards the well-rounded game, not just in tennis but in all sports, generally.

by hyperspin do you mean the topspin?
nadal only puts slightly more spin on the ball than federer, I read an article where they tested the rotations they put on the ball.
Nadal will destroy them with his fitness and mental focus, and a little spin :pimp:

Wish Del Potro's knee didn't bother him. Think he would have taken it.
As for Djoker, I think he can beat Nadal if he gets to the final, but I'm not sure if he can beat Rodger. The Nadal thing is simply due to the mental edge I think. Nadal has to be doubting himself a little every time he goes against Novak. Although it is clay, and well, that's the end of that. :oldlol:

aye, topspin. the spanish game of extreme western grip with all the technique and muscle-regions developed to accentuate that approach.
i would heavily question any article you read that made it sound like nadal and federer were in the same territory on RPM. if you actually watch the matches, nadal is the one who puts ungodly focus on his topsin, from his ankles and his knees, following through to his hips and upper body. every article and every commentator i've ever heard / read has been unified on the RPM advantage and the strain that it produces on the joints. again, characteristic of the spanish game, if you follow tennis circles.
so again, that's why i think federer is the better player than nadal. his fitness and approach to the game is why he can continue playing the highest level of tennis in to his 30's. federer's game is the one we can all emulate, and that's my point. the only person i would advise to play like nadal is a testosterone-imbued maniac who planned on making a splash and flaming out early.

Good to see Nadal tested again... lol.
This court is far too slow. I watched him against Almagro and he was returning 215km/h serves like they were second serves. Not to mention I've seen a few shots I thought were instant winners, and somehow he chases them down.
It's not even so much that he's a better player, it's just that he's a far better athlete than everyone else. The more they slow down the courts, the more he'll win. It's a reason I find the French one of the most boring.

That second set was the turning point, Fed broke him to go up 5-4 and serve for the set but Djokovic won three games and broke him twice then easily took the last set.
so they meet again. no way nadal loses the final again on his surface to nole 4 straight times in a gs final to complete thhe Nole slam. Nadal is well rested and prepared for this match more than ever. Nadal in 4.

Another match Federer just GIFTS to Djokovic. Not to take anything away from Djokovic though, he never goes away and grinds it out even if he isnt on the top of his game. Djokovic at least has a slim chance against Nadal, but I still don't see him coming close to beating him on clay. You never know though, those GS final loses might have some mental impact on Nadal if Djokovic goes up a break in the first set.

Djokovic has to be the most mentally tough player I've seen in any sport. Look at his run at the Australian Open. Federer having 2 match points against him. Saves both.
Same thing happens here against Tsonga. Doesn't let it phase him. Goes down 3-0 in the second against Fed, and manages to break his serve 4 times in a row... I don't think that's ever happened to Fed since he started winning all those titles.
It's weird as well considering he's from the balkan area, and being from there myself, I know we're short tempered and it's not exactly our strong point. We usually get hot headed and say f*ck it, lol.

I actually think the turning point for him may have been at the US Open where he beat Federer in that epic 5 setter. He got crushed by Rafa in the final that year, but still, finally getting over the Federer hump, especially in the fashion that he did really seemed to have changed him and his attitude toward the sport. Since then he has made a number of impressive comebacks and hung in tough matches.
This has been a good tournament. I really hope Sharapova gets the win tomorrow. Been waiting a long time to see her win again. The only thing that has stopped her since her shoulder injury has been her serve. When her serve is on, she is unbeatable right now, IMO. The rest of her game is great (even her movement has been good, even in the FO).
I hope Nadal crushes Djoker on Sunday.

Fed had 2 seasons better than djoker had last season and McEnroe still has probably the best season ever. The big 3 have all played well enough at their peaks that I will consider whomever ends up with the most slams the best all time. I think it ends up being fed/nadal/djoker in that order

i don't think there's any valid argument that any of the big three are asses. each one has slipped up a little slightly over the years, but overall they've been great ambassadors for tennis. each one intelligent, frank, good-natured... a far cry from many of the top athletes in other sports. which probably means that either tennis behavior is under a microscope, or else we all look for the slightest of reasons to confirm what we believed in the first place.
if anyone thinks federer, djokovic or nadal are poor sports, you should really take a look at some of the earlier players, like connors, mcenroe, and nastase. they were all first-class, outrageous, flaming assholes of the highest order. closest thing to any of them today is probably serena williams.

That sounds like Andy Murray, not Nadal.
Nadal's been an absolute rock this tourney. I've never seen him as determined and dominant as he's been this FO. Adjusting his return position has really helped neutralize the point so Djokovic can't immediately get on the offensive. Djoker's also making a lot more errors out of frustration than usual though.
Always a good day when Djokovic loses, but considering the way he's played the last year and a half, you can never count him down even if he's two sets and a break down.

djokovic has just as good footwork and ability to chase stuff down, and seemed to get the worst of the slippages despite rafa complaining the most. djoker visibly strained something in his leg at one point when he planted expecting to skid and sunk straight in to the clay instead.
having said that, the rain definitely helped him. the wetness blunted the one edge nadal has over him, i.e. heavy topspin.
nadal's backhand looked a little sharper than i remember, also. he hit a number of nice cross-court shots from the right, some of which clearly took djoker by surprise.

And I know that he was behaving like an immature brat sometimes in the past, but Federer is probably biggest douche on the tour and everyone seems to love him... :confusedshrug:

Federer is anything but a douche. I'd argue he is one of the most respectful people on tour. You want a douche, look at Andy Roddick.

Well, as I stated in an earlier post, Novak had one of the worst attitudes and very little, if any, heart in his matches. That all seemed to have changed when he and Fed were playing in the semis of the US Open and he came back after saving two match points to win an epic 5-set match against Fed. And Maga's video of Novak discussing that moment seems to support that view. It seemed to open an ocean of confidence that has turned him into the player he is today, finally getting by Fed in an epic match. Prior to that match with Fed, he had only had one comeback in a 5-set match and I believe that was against his countrymen Troicki (sp?) if I recall correctly. Since then, he has had numerous comebacks.
Before he wasn't an immature brat sometimes- more like all the time. He even displayed some of that today against Nadal because oh boo hoo, he's not whooping a 6-time French Open champion who is probably the greatest clay-court player of all-time. He seems to be a great sport because he has been dominating ever since then. So it isn't exactly clear if he has actually grown up or if it is just because he has been winning, lol.
As for Federer, he is routinely talked fondly about by other players and voted by the players for sportsmanship. Not just once either- seven times- and this by the players. I'm not really sure why you think he is a douche, lol.
I'm sure Djokovic is a good guy outside of the sport and that he just gets caught up due to how competitive he is, but that still doesn't excuse his consistently immature behavior on the tennis court.

Are you serious? When has Novak ever gone out of his way to throw a hissy fit on court and blame the court for his losing like Nadal did today. Djoker has always lost with dignity, where as Nadal and Federer could never accept the change. See Nadal today when things went against him? Remember Fed a year ago against Djoker? Complaining about time wasting, the court as well.
If anything Novak has been the best sport of the lot. Nadal acted like a spoiled brat yesterday acting as if the French belongs to him and the fact that he was losing just couldn't be happening. It had to be the court according to him. Couldn't be the fact he was getting outplayed? Not in his mind.

Actually I've followed tennis closely since the days of Agassi and Sampras. Of course you'd agree with him, he likes Rafa like you do, and you try to belittle the person who disagrees with you. Hilarious.
Djokovic has had one major outburst, and it was blowing off some steam while people in the crowd were talking during a point.
I'm in the minority because most of tennis is made up of casual fans. That's the truth of it. You won't find many that watch outside of the majors. And the casual fans love Rafa and Roger because its what has dominated Tennis these last years and its all they know.
Now this new guy comes in, has one bad moment, and everyone gets on him.
Rafa and Roger are terrible sports when it comes to losing. I remember Roger losing his cool several times looking for anything to blame against Nadal as well. Same thing went when he faced Djokovic.

Nadal is the epitome of what sportsmanship is all about, it's one of the main reasons he is my favorite player. Almost 100% of the time after a match that Nadal has lost, he simply says something along the lines of "My opponent was the better player today", again and again.
He never makes excuses.

My opinion in this subject is simple: All three are classy guys.
Federer comes from a different "time of tennis", his background is a lot different than Nadal and Djoko even without him being that old ..
He hates to lose like everybody, but he's the one who we can see that most after a match. He's still classy, just too much competitive.

All 3 guys are classy enough. Who knows how they are in person, but they handle themselves well professionally.
As for the match, I'm not sure what to think about the weather and delay. It didn't seem to be an issue for Nadal until Djoker started making a run... and I didn't see Djoker complaining.
I really can't stand clay anyway. They could get rid of the French Open as a major altogether and I wouldn't lose any sleep. I think less than 10% of all ATP/WTA tours events are even played on clay. It's a gimmicky surface, and most players don't even like it.

How dense are you? I wasn't talking about me, I'm talking about the players.
You said he always congratulates his opponents and says they were better on the day when he loses. When has a player even said otherwise? When has there been a terrible grand slam losing speech?
It's always "He was great, deserved to win, blah blah"... That doesn't prove anything in terms of sportsmanship. Everyone has the common knowledge to know what to say.
Nadal threw a hissy fit yesterday. Not his first time against Djokovic as well.

You ever play on har-tru composite clay? That stuff's a dream IMO. Underground hydration system so it's always in perfect condition no matter the weather. Nice and firm and easy to move around on, but with a little bit of softness to make it easy on the knees and ankles.
More tournaments should switch to that stuff IMO.

As a player all you can do is try to handle the circumstances that are given to you. Nadal owned Djokovic for the first two sets, it was nice to see Novak start to play better but don't blame the weather or the tournament schedule for Nadal's 7th French. He earned it. I'd also like to see if you would find their "lob" shots so slow if you were on the court.
And to comment on your last post about giving the opponent credit. I was not talking about the speeches at the end of Slams, of course the players have to say the right thing there. I'm talking about post match and on court interviews for the smaller tournaments.

Once again, where has either player, or any for that matter done differently at the end in interviews?
And of course I'm not going to be able to play their shots at a high level. I'm not a professional tennis player. What kind of argument is that? Nadal is a moonballer. Get the ball over the net and hope the opponent messes up. Now that a better player has come along, the only way he can win is on the slower courts; clay being the perfect example.

Nadal usually hits more winners than his opponent, moonballers don't hit winners.
He hits with extreme spin, that's all.
