J Sub?

Pearl Jam's best album was 21 years ago...

However, some people seem to love their later stuff.

It could really only be them, The Chili Peppers, Foo Fighter, White Stripes, Green Day or if you wanted to be cheeky and reach with the Flaming Lips or Wilco.

Who else is there?

I'll take NOFX (but that is lacking any objectivity).

Modest Mouse isn't hipster *** music, only their two newest albums, before that hipsters didn't like them because they made acid redneck music that hipsters didnt know about.

Without The Strokes' 2001 debut "Is This It?" so many other bands wouldn't have had any commercial success at all. White Stripes, Black Keys, etc. list goes on...

They are far from being anything hipster, they were hyped massively from their beginning. And rightfully so, I couldn't imagine anyone else than Julian Casablancas pulling off that Lou Reed/Iggy Pop kind of shit, while the aging "greatest rock band" Oasis was being played 24/7 with their latest bullshit record. This really was something different at the time. I wouldn't be surprised if your sorry ass was listening to Nickelback though back then. :facepalm

And they probably hit more booze, drugs, sluts before their first record than any of the other bands listed here have done in their whole career. A factor which many seem only to count in with rappers, but come on.

Also, Modest Mouse is hipster garbage. I don't care what they used to be. I used to be 8 years old. I'm not anymore. No one will ever throw me in any sort of list where being a kid is a qualification.

I remember when they came up. There was a ton of good music around, guess you just weren't listening to it, white stripes had like 3 albums out already before This is it, son, and black keys are shit

Hitting booze drugs and sluts doesn't make them a good band, assclown.

Can't believe you compared Julian Casablancas to Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. You are the biggest idiot on the forum, congrats:applause:

As for the topic, Wilco's evolution through their first 5 albums is amazing. They've kinda "settled in" for the last few and they, IMO, haven't been up to the quality of the previous but still good overall. I think they have as good of a case as anyone for the truly best American band due to their creativity and longevity. I'm probably biased though. And he went on to orchestrate basically every melody on most of their songs they've ever had from there on out, while writing a lot of Flea's stuff as well. I never said Slovak was terrible. he only started doing that for by the way because flea lost interest, and by the way was their best record, but look where frusciante lead them afterwards, to the shittiest most bland double-record of all time-Stadium Arcadium. Blood sugar sex magik and mothers milk he was just a hillel clone

on californication he only played the way he did because his wrists weren't strong enough to play chords like he used too because he was a messed up junky.

?? Not too sure what to say to that. Are you saying he only put out great songs because he didn't have the strength to make chord shapes with his hands? He was brought back into the band after his rehab treatment and they jammed/practiced/recorded for over a year before Californication came out. If you're trying to tell me he couldn't hold a barre chord after jamming half of the day away for over a year, you're high. Get real.

He had nothing to do with One Hot Minute too

Your point? That was easily one of their least successful albums. I'll take Stadium Arcadium over One Hot Minute. My Friends is the only Navarro song on that album I really liked as far as a guitarists standpoint. Nothing else is too impressive to me. Aeroplane is sexy because of Flea.

Not all of Stadium Arcadium is bad. There's tons of fillers that should have never been on there. In fact, it should have just been one disc. Still beats the new shit they dropped with Klinghoffer months ago.

I don't remember if it was in scar tissue or a guitar player magazine interview where I read it. I used to be really big on John Frusciante and RHCP when I was 12, I even bought all of John's solo albums when he was releasing one a month.

Now though I can't listen to this stuff, too bland.

Great band...could have been so much more if not for their "Were So Much Smarter Then You" approach and de la Rocha didnt leave so early.

Another great band that at least deserves a mention and similarly to Rage had some band problems that hinder their success is Sublime.

Another great band that at least deserves a mention and similarly to Rage had some band problems that hinder their success is Sublime.

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/396696/Sublime.jpg

I think they're success started around 92 and they released some great stuff but I think could have had much more success if Bradley Nowell didnt die only a few years later.

Please, God, no Sublime mentions.... :facepalm

Absolutely and positively! Better musicians all around except Chris Cornell's vocals.

Best American band of the last 20 years
i'd agree about leaning towards the chilis, but they're not quite classic or mainstream enough to fit that description.

honestly, i'm not sure america (the USA) has produced a 'great' band in the last 20 years. there's been a very long draught and this is one of those questions without a good answer IMO.

REM might come the closest, other than the chilis. pearl jam is far from a satisfactory answer. there really just isn't anyone from the USA to fit the 1992 - 2012 'greatness' slot, unless i'm suffering from massive cerebral flatulence.

I haven't been able to tell who most of them are. I don't read magazines and shit. I just listen to the music.

Ten, Vitalogy, Vs., Lost Dogs, those are all perfect albums how is pearl jam far from a satisfactory answer:facepalm

REM a great band, better than Pearl Jam?? Shit, I seen those guys live like 3 years ago, worst show I ever been too, all they did was play crappy new songs and lecture about evil republicans, were blown off the stage by BOTH warm up acts. Then for the encore they played MORE crappy new songs

Well, this is totally not subjective at all!

Anyway, my choices:

Tool
Nine Inch Nails
RHCP
Pearl Jam
Explosion In The Sky
Foo Fighters
Rage Against The Machine

All have been very influential in the past 20 years. As far as 'best,' it's just subjective as hell. Those are some of my favorites.

Also Soundgarden.

Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are at least in terms of song-writing and musical ability the best band of the last 30 years. AIC is right up there as well.

Nirvana's not that great they just springboarded a movement. AIC, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden all outshined them musically and song-writing wise. Not only that, but Kurt was a dick for a year or two after they got big.

So a band that's been irrelevant since 1993 is the best American band in the last 20 years? :facepalm

Heavencent is correct. Metallica is the best, biggest American band since 1991. Pearl Jam is a close second but they've sucked Binaural and that was out in 2000. Tool isn't far behind them. Bands like Soundgarden, Rage, STP are good but come on now. You can't be considered the best when you go on hiatus for 10 years between albums.

Metallica's music may not be as good as their 80's and 90's stuff but they're still selling a lot of records, always get #1 album first-week to second week sales.

I never really considered them a possibility for best, but I'm pumped to see the Deftones get three off-hand mentions in this thread anyway.

Tool seems like a solid choice for this topic.

Only good choice posted so far is Chili Peppers. Rest are either not American or :wtf: . I think Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Counting Crows, U2, REM are all contenders if we are talking about 92 and up for example (20 years).

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have that belief. The other grunge bands were superior to Nirvana, and I think Grohl might just be a better musician then he was. I don't know who I'd put as the best American band of the last twenty years. I'd like to give it to the Foo Fighters, but even then I'm not sure.
