I can never understand why athletes (unless you're big already like some baseball players and football players) let themselves go. I know they're not training as much as they were when they were playing pro sports but still... you would think that they would go to the gym and work out and eat healthy.

That, plus your knees hurt like hell after 20 plus years of running back and forth for miles.

Doesn't it get old? I mean Barkley even got to the point now where he realizes he let himself go and is losing weight.

But there are other exercises. Barkley does the elliptical. There's still all sorts of other difference exercises to do to stay in shape. Bike riding, swimming, lifting.

These guys are former pro athletes. You would think that eating right and working out would carry over into retirement.

It's called aging. Your body metabolism slows down and weight starts accumulating.

A good diet for an active NBA player is probably more then enough to make a regular person who doesn't work out and play as much as them fat. They eat alot more then people realise it's just that they burn it off and need the energy and protein. That's why athletes get fat once they stop being active. Plus age

Doesn't help that these athletes go from consuming 6000+ calories a day with all the conditioning work they do to absolutely no conditioning but still having that crazy appetite.

I can understand it. When you work out as much as they do, you eat a shitload of food. I was a sprinter for 8 years and had pretty much the same diet as Michael Phelps (eating a tremendous amount in case you didn't know). When you stop working out so much so suddenly, your food intake doesn't naturally go away, so you gain a lot of weight really fast. My first year after retiring from sprinting, I gained 40 pounds even though I was playing about 5-6 hours of basketball per week.

That's the truth. You'll see certain guys stay pretty slim into old age, but by and large, most of us WILL put on a few pounds. The key is to still keep the heart pumping by at least walking, biking, and playing pick-up games when you can. I've accepted that I may never have my 25 yr old body again, but I don't have to be a slob either.

nope, but atleast he looks like a regular dude. I bet he's no longer having crazy parties. I wish i could hang w/ former athletes, they probably have no friends and would LOVE to have even just ONE friend.

Professional atheletes burn a massive number of calories, and have diets that maintain there muscle mass in the process (which means they eat massive amounts of calories).

It's a hell of a lot easier to stop burning those calories than it is to drop a couple thousand calories a day off a diet.
