no real weaknesses and an extremely sessionable beer for an ale. clean finish, not too 'heavy'.

i bought this on a whim at a convenient store because of the name. i mean...arrogant bastard? how cool is that? i thought the name was the novelty of it...i went into it thinking it was going to taste pretty awful. ended up being one of my fav beers ever. not cheap though so i don't buy it too often.

this tastes really malty with a hint of chocolate or sugar. no 'corn' taste to it all

along with newcastle, this is another of my go-to beers

been a fav of mine for years. goes great with bbq.
as you can see, i really, really like ales :lol
don't get me wrong though...i've knocked back plenty of cheap 40s as well. if i want a cheap buzz with beer, that's the way to go

Newcastle, Blue Moon, Dos Equis, Corona, Yuengling, PBR, Stella Artois, and Bass for session drinking. Various Sam Adams are another favorite of mine
Most of the best craft brews I've had I can't remember the names. Iron Hill Brewery near Philly has some amazing ones though.

funny you mention stella...i'm actually drinking one right now. i know it has a reputation as a 'girly' drink but it's ok i guess. i don't think i'd buy it myself but i've certainly had worse beers.
i totally whiffed on sam adams. boston lager is another of my go-to beers. i love trying out new breweries. i'm not a beer snob but i'll drive a few miles just to get a 6 pack of something local i heard is good. too bad i can't really get any microbrews from anywhere east over here

One of your favorite beers ever? I tried this last year and I compared the taste to carbonated cat piss with dandelions in a blender. I don't know how you can enjoy that :rant

Who says that? The real Stella's 5.2% and high in alcohol compared to most beers men drink.

well, you would be in the minority. i showed it to two friends and they loved it too. maybe you don't like the bitterness of ales? it's sort of an acquired taste. if you don't like ales, it is absolutely not the beer for you even though i find it to be pretty moderate bitter-wise as far as ales go

it's not about ABV. lots of women drink stella's. look at how they market it.

I've been working part-time in a beer distributor for the past three and a half years and haven't sold one case to a female. Not one.

If you ever get the chance to go to San Diego I highly highly recommend going to their brewery (in Escondido). Easily one of my favorite places to go to when I lived down there, their Imperial Russian is my favorite beer to drink but its usually on limited release and the place would be packed when they had growler pours of it.
I like many of your choices: Black Butte, Sierra Nevada (enjoy their Celebration Ale as well), Firestone DBA. Those are all beers I buy on the regular. Lagunitas Little Sumpin' and Pliny the Elder are up there too. I had the pleasure of trying Pliny the Younger at the Russian River brewery and it was too good.

interesting. i knew at least one female that loved them. maybe they don't buy by the case?
marketing is always interesting. notice how dr pepper is doing a campaign that says drinking dr pepper is a 'guy thing'. at first, i asked...why would they want to alienate soda drinking females? but they must do tons of case studies that show the vast majority of dr pepper drinkers are male. all i know is that stella's are almost exclusively marketed towards women.
oh and maybe give AB another shot? unless you were that repulsed? :lol to each their own i guess

 for sure dude. i used to live in SD as well....back in 04-05. way before i knew of the brewery. if i'm ever down there again, that will definitely be on my to do list. vons is the cheapest place i can find to buy it. truth be told, i'm usually a cheap whiskey/coke guy. i always look forward to anything stone brewing co. though. they are definitely on my radar.
i want to expand my choices so i'll try to pick up some lagunitas or pliny next time
As already mentioned, Stone Brewing Company is the best

Cousin is in Spain right now and went to Belgium and toured the brewery... Also bought a shit ton of their beer. I think a 6 pack of the stuff was like 50 euros or something but sells for like 150-200 bucks here.

You are absolutely correct and I am glad to know someone else here knows of this wonderful beer... I have been able to get it black market in the past at stupid prices.. but it was worth it.
There will be a special limited edition gift set that will ship to the United States very soon... search on "westvleteren" and "shelton brothers" if you are interested.
I am sure those gift packs will go fast! I think they will go for around $85 each.

bump...
so they opened up a bev mo here. stoked. signed up for a card and all that shit. you know the score.
spent maybe a half hour in there and that was almost exclusively just looking at beers. by far the best selection in town. slightly disappointed they didn't have more imports but it'll keep me interested nonetheless. couple cool names...raging bitch and ass kisser, which was a porter. there was an asian guy there that was almost pacing back and forth/doing laps around the store trying to be of help. i kind of wished i could help the poor guy relax a bit but i've been there so ya.
being as i'm in cali, it's really heavy in carrying cali craft brews. ales are really taking off here, which is totally fine by me. i picked up a pinot noir and jim beam too but let's get going on some of my beer pickups.
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqqt53t6GM1qbsikxo1_500.jpg
that's it. this beer might have solidified stone brewing as my favorite brewing company. just another slam dunk. this had a frothy head. it kind of has a sweet malty forefront but that aftertaste has some hoppy kick to it. you can definitely feel the alcohol heat as well. at 11.2%, a couple of pints of this will get you well on your way.
the only thing i didn't quite like about this was the heavy carbonation. this thing is filling...like i just ate a meal with lots of bread/biscuits filling. not quite sure i like it more than the original because of this and the fact it seems to not have the same 'character'. i mean, this shit is really good and is just another well rounded beer but the original AB is slightly more palatable imo.
http://brewyorkcity.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/lagunitas-ipa.jpg
totally got this because of the recommendations in this thread. been on my radar since
really smooth IPA. solid all around with hints of caramel and citrus. not too strong in that area though as the hops really take over. i don't know if you would call this traditional or whatever but ya...just a solid IPA and one of my favorites.
http://thethinkerblog.com/images/lagunitas_little_sumpin_sumpin.jpg
not sure why the head in most these pictures seem to be so thick. i poured slow at a 45 degree angle and my head was not even an inch. anyway, this had a thin head with plenty of carbonation. full bodied mouthfeel....the liquid itself just felt thick and the lacing was intense. one side of my glass had lacing on the whole side when i finished. citrus smell and i got a bit of tangerine taste. i like this one a little more than the IPA. this is incredibly drinkable and refreshing for a 7.5% ABV. it also just seems to avoid that super 'dry' feel when you drink many ales so don't get too carried away. its' really not that bitter at all for a 7.5%. she's a keeper :D
http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bella/hoegaarden.jpg
yet another selection because of you fine gentlemen. i'm not really experienced in wheat beers at all but this was really solid. i absolutely loved the orange/lemon accents. definitely a sessionable beer with no real flaws....a small step up from blue moon.....
so no pliny the elder or westvleteren 12 at BM
next pickups: firestone's union jack and dogfish head IPA (90 minute one if they have it).
obviously can't drink these on the daily despite BM's best efforts to take all my money. :lol
you guys try anything new lately?

Props on all the love for Stone Brewing in this thread. They are brewing what I consider the most consistently good beers that I've ever had. I live out in Massachusetts and love that we get their stuff out here. Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard when its available are just great. Once in a while I'll spend big and grab a six of the Arrogant Bastard that they age on oak chips...just adds a great level of awesome to an already great ale. Their Anniversary brews are terrific. Also, not sure if anyone's been keeping up with the Vertical Epic series they've been putting out, but I have been buying a few every year since the 9.9.9 release and they've all been fantastic. 12.12.12 should be great.
Sierra Nevada does some great stuff. I keep a 12-pack of Torpedo Extra IPA in the fridge at all times and their Pale Ale is the one I'll typically keep to share with others.
Dogfish Head gets a lot of shit these days for selling out and doing that TV show and all that, but 90 Minute IPA and Burton Baton are two of my favorites on the higher end of the ABV spectrum. Their 120 Minute IPA still ranks as one of the best I've ever had. The Ancient Ales brews have been pretty good so far, as well. I like that they're not afraid to go completely off the rails with what they'll make a beer out of, even if its not always successful. American craft brewing needs more of that attitude.

any pliny the elder fans? i swear, this beer is made out of the same cloth. mega hoppy bomb.

more lagunitas. don't think i've had a bad or even average brew from them. quickly becoming one of my fav breweries.

that's only some. my collection is up to about 20 beers now, mostly pint+ sized bombers. only rule is it's not a giant craft brand. i mean, i love firestone but you can buy it everywhere so i'm not saving that.
need to build a shelf. some might think it looks tacky but hey, i spent $15-18 on some of those beers. i'm not just gonna toss it. the labels are slick looking anyway.

good god, this might be my fav beer from stone and that's saying something. like...i want to give it a 10. what a concept as well. this totally has that 'fresh' taste to it. i don't think i've sniffed a stronger piney nose. you can truly smell the hops and hints of pineapple. taste wise, tons of citrusy/grapefruit notes up front. ridiculously sweet for a 9.4% ABV beer and a nice hearty bitter backbone lingers perfectly. yet, not dry. they hide the alcohol extremely well. i could hardly taste it. good amount of carbonation but not even close to too much. i see this being in my top 5.
what's up with san diego and their american IPAs? between stone and green flash, they are among the standard bearers imo. dogfish head and lagunitas are up there as well, but i'm really digging what SD has going on.
stone is really involved in social media so if you make enough noise in your area about getting it to you, they will consider widening their distribution. they've been doing this particular beer for over a year now so it seems like it's having reasonable success. stone will actually buy the beer back if it goes beyond the 'enjoy by' date. i have no idea what they do w/ it but there's that.
i fvcking love you, stone.
http://boozedancing.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/green-flash-double-stout.jpg
i also picked up this guy. trying to venture out more into the stout world. definitely an acquired taste, at least in my case. thick viscosity that just coats your whole mouth. more coffee notes than chocolate. it was good but i still think the best stout i had was the abyss by deschutes, who also happens to make one of my favorite porters.
btw, talked to one of the guys i buy beer from a lot and he said that pliny the elder doesn't distribute to the area. so, mystery solved kinda. been looking for that bitch for over a year now, haha. i'm still up to trade for it if anybody is down.
http://www.firestonebeer.com/images/catalog/PILS.png
the last beer i tried in this latest haul and it didn't disappoint. i drank the stout first cuz i knew the double IPA would kill my taste buds for a bit. not a huge fan of pilsners but this is quite a home run from firestone.
pours a nice classic golden with decent lacing. smells like straw/hay. i want to say it has a bit of wheat aftertaste? i haven't tried many pilsners so this is all new to me. maybe i like it cuz they dry hop like it an IPA...but man, this is a light lager with german flair and a hoppy backbone. it has that 'grassy' taste to it. overall, it didn't blow me away but it's really good. session-able beer at a great price point, which firestone seems to excel at. i'm not a fan of their 805 or solace as much as others but i might like this even more than their DBA which is always welcome around here. nothing to complain about here...just solid. real tasty beer that i think almost any beer drinker will at least find decent.
i could see myself just drinking a 6 pack in the summer or 12 pack if things get more rowdy, haha. good beer with food imo. i chew occasionally and i also think it would be good with that. refreshing. with the way other firestone beers come off the shelves around here, i'd have to say this is quite underrated as i always see droves of this and little of the 805.

i hear ya on that. i recently (well, in the past year) lost a ton of weight. i lost about 35 lbs. i went from being a total fat ass to a semi fat ass, haha. i'm sitting at about 180 lbs now and i'd like to lose 10 more pounds but i feel my beer consumption is my final main obstacle.
have any recommendations on single malt scotches? i don't always have the money for that stuff but i really want to get into it at some point. i need a change up from cheap whiskey which is my default for hard liquor :lol

Yeah, I don't drink beer anymore either because it was a little rough on my digestive system. Recently I've taken more to scotch and rye whiskey.
For scotch I usually like the Laphroaig 10 year or Quarter Cask and rye I really love Templeton Rye.
The simplest answer is the best answer, to me:

These days I rarely drink beer but I usually go with a stout or a porter. Dark beer is the way to go imo unless it's a summer setting. I honestly can't stand IPA's anymore. I hate a beer that is overly hoppy and the acidity of it doesn't sit well with me.

If i'm drinking for the sake of getting drunk it's miller lite.
I'll drink just about anything, but i'm not wild about wheat beers and most people's homemade bullsh*t.
Don't get me wrong, i like craft brews but people are getting really snobby and going overboard with that sh*t.
Nothing wrong with a Budwieser or a Yuengling.
Sometimes a beer that has hundreds of thousands of dollars of research and development put into it to provide the consumer with a scientifically precise and consistent product isn't necessarily a bad thing.

there's liquor in that process.. I can't just start with it though because i'll be too f*cked up too early.
I'm well aware of the light beer equilibrium.

Best beers I've had lately:
Pumpking & 2XMAS by Southern Tier
Robert the Bruce by Three Floyds
Pirate Bomb by Prairie Artisan Ales (14% alcohol but one of the best stouts I've ever had)
I like to try a multitude of different craft beers from around the country. Unfortunately it's a pretty expensive habit haha.
