I just wanted to remind everyone that the "Dream Team" documenting the 1992 legendary basketball olympic team will be on NBA TV tonight at 9pm. It will run from 9pm to 10:30pm. The documentary will then immediately repeat on NBA TV from 10:30pm to midnight.

For NBA fans, this is must watch TV. The promos look real good. I think it could be the first NBA program I have seen to have an NFL Films level of production and story telling. I can't wait. It's a perfect fit in between Game 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals.

I don't have NBA TV. Are they going to have it up on youtube after it is finished airing?

Could you post a summary of the documentary after it is finished, especially the parts on Michael Jordan?

I may not be able to do a summary tonight. But I am recording it. And can definitely have a summary tomorrow morning.

I am most interested in what they have to say about Isiah Thomas. As someone on this forum who is older, and can remember the "Dream Team" like it was this morning, the Isiah Thomas controversy was a big deal. I can't wait to hear what Jordan, Pippen, Bird, Malone and even Stockton have to say about it.

Its funny how on this board, everyone thinks D-Wilkins was robbed too. In retrospect he was. But at the time, that didn't have nearly the buzz, the Thomas situation had.

Laettner won a gold medal because he was carried by 11 other Hall of Famers. To win a title, you have to do the carrying yourself.

If I'm not mistaken, Sir Charles was the leading scorer on the team (off the top of my head, could be wrong). Wasn't like he was 'carried' to his medal, he did some heavy lifting there.

That's the simple answer, and I see where you're coming from. On an NBA forum it doesn't carry the same weight, but an Olympic gold medal is still a very rare achievement in sports. Not many people have them. It's a great honor, no matter how stacked the team is relative to the competition.

Not when teams like OKC are considered "Stacked", because everyone on it basically knows how to play team ball on a consistent basis. Now, the Dream Team, that is what you would call a stacked team.

Bird talking about Webber from that scrimmage stood out to me a lot. "If this guy's comin in I gotta get out." Webber was so incredibly talented, he really does get overlooked. Another in the long list of "**** injuries" guys.

Rewatching it again....what just amazes me is that you hear so much about Magic and Larry's friendship, it can really go past your head on the dynamic MJ and Magic had, specifically how it was a legit passing of the torch. I like how MJ wanted to take it, but Magic didn't just give it to him, made him earn it.

1970's West Germany's national team was pretty dominant. Beckenbauer, Muller, Overath, Grabowski, etc...

Also the 2002 Brazilian national team had a lot of talent. Rivaldo, Ronaldo in his prime, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, young Ronaldinho, Ricardhino, Edmilson, Denilson, Lucio, Juninho, etc...

Not sure about best players in the world, but there have been instances in both Soccer and Cricket where teams were assembled to represent a country that were so good that they were labeled the "Invincibles". I know the cricket team was Australian with a bunch of legends in their prime, not sure about soccer.

Sarcastic
06-14-2012, 11:14 AM
You guys are really selling Laettner short. At the time he was the most accomplished college player available. 2 time champion. College player of the year. He had a much better resume than Alonzo Mourning. And as I have said in previously, politics played a large role. The older guys did not want a young Shaq to come in and take the spot light away from Magic, Bird, and Jordan. It wasn't about putting together the best possible team. It was about putting together the right team.

At the end of the documentary, they showed what happened after the 92 Olympics and they showed MJ winning all those 6 titles and then eventually, Drexler and Robinson won one, too. It got me thinking because Clyde won when Jordan was out of the NBA and Robinson won when Jordan and the Bulls were gone.

Then they showed Barkley not winning a title but if you think about it, almost all of those other guys who did not win a title (Ewing, Stockton, Malone, etc.) didn't win because of one guy---Jordan.

Just makes me appreciate Jordan even more.

Pip was harrassing Toni full court when he didn't even have the ball. Must've been real awkward when he showed up for his first day on the Bulls :oldlol:

There is a backstory on that. Pippen was on a long term contract and was very underpaid relative to his production. He wanted a new deal but Krause wouldn't renegotiate and it was believed he wanted to save cap space to sign Kukoc.

Krause was very open about his interest in Kukoc and it was a sore spot for Pippen. Toni was reluctant to sign with the Bulls because he believed Jordan/Pippen didn't want him there and he had good reason to believe that.

Brazil in 1970. Pele, the greatest player of all time, plus Carlos Alberto Torres, Rivellino, Jairzinho, Gerson and Tostao. They dominated everyone (also with crazy flair like the dream team) in the 1970 world cup, even beating the great Italy in the final 4 goals to 1. They are widely considered the greatest soccer team ever.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/04/30/article-1175630-04C11FB2000005DC-643_468x300.jpg

Still, it can't really be compared to the dream team. A soccer dream team would have like Pele, Cruyff, Maradona and Beckenbauer together or some crazy thing like that.

But who would they even play? Brazil team to me could be comparable as far as pure dominance/talent. You'll never get a soccer team like the Dream Team given so many great soccer players are spread out in countries.

I could be wrong. I dont have much of a clue with soccer when it comes to league play. But reading your post it seems like a fitting team for the question asked.

You are right. It does fit the question indeed. If there was a dream team in soccer, it was Brazil 1970. Like you said, because the talent is so spread in soccer, it does not get closer than that.

And like the Olympics, the World Cup is a short tournament. And a world cup team is a once a generation thing. A league club would not be a proper comparisson, because the team usually stays for the next season.

Just like the dream team (with those guys) was never back together after 1992, Brazil never again played with that wonderful lineup.

- production quality of the video was sub-par actually, who's the narrator they picked
- magic and bird were captains, barkley was the leading scorer of dream team, but for me it was actually all about seeing jordan and pippen vs the world. Bulls were everything in those days....there was an aura about the chicago bulls and those two being on the US team imo was the biggest thing for me (except magic, bird, and charles)
- Jordan looked every bit as awesome in the video as i remember of that time. Totally the star above all the stars. Ultimate top gun
- john stockton's pretty funny....i actually remember seeing that bit on nba inside stuff when it aired in '92....
- i think there was a swimmer who won medal in barcelona and later hosted or appeared on inside stuff

Saw this earlier on youtube and i have to say i really liked it.
No complaints about the production as it was very good , no problem with the narrator , no Morgan Freeman ,but still.I love the behind the scene look at the practices and scrimmages , especially the one at Monte Carlo , because i heard Magic talk about it some time ago and hyping it like it was the best basketball ever played.Would like to see the whole unedited footage of those , i bet there was a lot of great plays by those all time greats left unused.

wonder why Bobby hurley never made the NBA? He was the sh^T in college

That car accident was very serious and he was lucky just to live.
Yup. I'm surprised I cannot find a picture right away of the wreckage. It was shown in Sports Illustrated at the time. He also was not wearing a seatbelt. From an article:

He was thrown 100 feet into the ditch, his lungs collapsed. He had broken ribs, a fractured shoulder blade, a compression fracture of his lower back, a torn tendon in his right knee and soft tissue injuries. He was a mess.
Bobby Hurley was actually averaging 7ppg and 6apg (in 26mpg) during his first 19 career games. He was doing fairly well.

Regarding his appearance in the Dream Team doc though, I do not recall him having braces back then. He looks like Butthead. Further, he was looking pretty aged for a 40 year old.
