View Full Version : NBA considering idea of penalizing flopping

eliteballer

David Stern is determined to stop the floppers, even if it takes until the next morning.

The NBA commissioner believes too many players are deceiving referees into calling fouls by falling down, or flopping. So he and the league's newly reformed competition committee met Monday for a discussion about how it can be prevented.

One option, Stern said, is a "postgame analysis" in which a player could be penalized if it was determined he flopped. The league retroactively upgrades or downgrades flagrant fouls after review, and along those lines he said that perhaps a player could receive a message from New York saying: "Greetings from the league office. You have been assigned flopper status."

"No, I'm joking, but something like that," Stern said. "That sort of lets people know that it's not enough to say 'it's all part of the game.' "

Not far enough.

They need to allow any intentional foul taken to let the team fouled choose to take the free throws or take the ball out of bounds instead.

this ought to be interesting (not that the league hasn't threatened to penalize flopping before) - many of the worst floppers are the best player in the league.

Also, with CP3, Blake and Reggie all on the same team, this small rule change could possibly prevent the Clippers from reaching the playoffs next year. :(

During a 6-hour meeting, they also discussed expanding instant replay for flagrant fouls and goaltending, decided the lottery system is the best one currently available, and seemed to favor leaving the away from the ball foul rule as is, so coaches could continue to intentionally foul notoriously bad free throw shooters.

I thought Stern wanted people tuning in to NBA games? This shit's like seeing a herpes blister in the middle of sex.

I'm sure going into year 3 with Blake due to explode refs will actually start calling things and the flopping will die down. We all know CP3 can dominate with or without flops, he just likes to keep the game entertaining. As for Evans... he's a bench player.

Gotta disagree, just because when you are dealing with fingers to the face and a quick hand motion like that, it is possible that the very tip of Rose's fingernail caught the edge of James' chin. I mean, at least there is some plausibility of marginal contact (although not likely and certainly completely exaggerated).

In the one against the Mavs, he just saw the trap coming, threw his head back and flat-out ran out of bounds... And the actually CALLED that a foul on Haywood. They called it a foul... In the Finals. On one of the biggest stages in all of sports.

I understand doing what you have to do to try to get a win, but a player as great as James shouldn't want to get a foul call like that on a stage that big. It is embarrassing.

Blake chilled with the flpping once the post-season started, so I'm not too worried about him. RIP CP3 tho

I wish guys were actually GOOD at it, though. But when it's as stupid as that LeBron head snap backwards or the (insert CP3 spinorama here) it's just like "wtf am i watching"

worst offender is Paul. BG was flopping in the reg season but he cooled it in the playoffs. Evans.. eh. He's a mixed bag. Not worse than anyone else, though his are the most hilarious. Williams is in the same boat.

If these rules force Paul to actually play the damn game instead of flopping for calls then this is a godsend to us.

A lot of the respect I lost for Blake during the regular season came right back in the playoffs when he toned down the flopping and staring players down after dunks shit. You could probably count the Blake flops in the playoffs on one hand. CP3 and Reggie were fvcking embarrassing though.

First of all, a lot of these look hilarious. With that said, I think there's a difference between flops like we see from Tyrus up there and plays like we see from Bosh in that particular incident (not counting his Boozer situation). I'm still a believer in the inability to punish a player based on the way they fall from legitimate contact. Bosh flailed when he hit Anthony, but I don't find flailing punishable.

On the contrary, outright fake responses, as we see from Thomas. . . those are the ones I think would be most susceptible to fine. In truth, slowing down nearly any collision enough can make it appear ridiculous. As such, I think punishment will be reserved for the fakes, not the flails or over-exaggerations, for I believe it'd be nearly impossible in many cases to surely conclude a player who was hit should not have responded in the manner they did. In Thomas' case, he was hit, absorbed it, moved beyond it, then decided to fake a fall. That's a textbook flop to me (as opposed to the Bosh play).

Problem seems to be a lot of refs only notice the motion of the player who sells the flop. That's why I have always been in favor of a ref being at half court (much like tennis) who simply looks for three in the key, five-second violation, or makes note of flops. It's not a popular notion, but those rules are so inconsistently enforced and I've accepted the ridicule for the idea.

I completely agree that there need to be more refs that are only looking for specific things.

I also think all reviews should be done in the booth by an official review team. There is no reason for the guys on the floor to make a call they didn't see in the first place.

Its not like the NBA cant afford it.

Id say flopping's punishment is one technical foul. If you flop twice, you are done for the game. If approved, this could be a real bad news for LA Clippers.

If they reviewed all fouls then this wouldn't be a problem. Give the refs a review period every quarter that they can go back and review every single foul, and if FT's were awarded give the other team gets 2 FT's and possession to even it out. In the final two minutes of the game every foul is reviewed by an official reviewer who can over rule the foul, and if it is a flop no Ft's are awarded to the flopper, but the other team gets a technical FT and possession.

Flopping would stop instantly.

You guys are making this WAY too complicated. The NBA already reviews the footage of every game for officiating purposes.

All they have to do now is assess fines for flops retroactively, that will act as a deterrent and stop guys from flopping altogether
