There are a few in Shaq fan nation that are neutral when it comes to Kobe. However, most Shaq fans despise Kobe in ways you can't imagine. Bottomline, the answer to OP's question is simple. Kobe is retiring a Laker, Shaq was expendable.

By the way, I tend to agree with TJ. I don't see Kobe deferring to anybody, and at this point that's only going to hurt the Lakers. Kobe, despite his numbers, has been declining for the past 2-3 years. At this point he's nothing more than a volume shooter who scores a lot of points, with an efficient game here and there.

Kobe's a problem for only one reason. Not production, or any imagined ball hog-ery. Not PER, FG% or usage rate.
The problem is his enormous salary. That is also what led to Shaq getting dumped in favor of Kobe in 2004. It's not that they aren't worth the money, they are. It justs get very difficult to pay the other guys and continue to have a balanced roster. Which is why Miami has Lebron, Bosh, Wade, and a bunch or league minimum guys that they are lucky to get any production out of.
I read that article and I had a hard time finding anything negative. It just talked about the fact that he should still be able to preform at a high level next year and get around 25 a game.
No surprise from Simers, he has a grudge with KB for some reason / or likes getting run for his anti kobe stories. Wouldn't surprise me to see something similar from Plaschke either cause he's a ****ing moron.

No doubt Kobe would say he feeds off such doubt, and so he's going to continue to shoot to prove the naysayers wrong.

I don't think that's Kobe's problem at all. Kobe, despite how he plays, knows when he's hurting the team with his shooting. If he continues his asinine usage rate I can only assume he's doing it for the numbers... at least in the regular season.

They'll be a borderline playoff team. Remember you get rid of Kobe and replace him with NOTHING. Congrats your new starting SG is Devin Ebanks. Not to mention that Bynum and Pau still get in each other's way, your bench still sucks and it will take teams exactly 2.5 games to figure out how to beat the team.

Like it or not, but with Kobe making $30M per season, there's just not enough money left to put enough around him.
Just think of it like this. This season Kobe's salary will be the same as LeBron and Wade's combined. Think about that. The Heat have to be careful with their money because of how much they spent on the big 3, but at least they got 2 superstars for that money.

Lakers are not gonna amnesty Kobe. that is the stupidest thing in the world. that's like firing a guy yet continue to pay him - which is what will happen when you amnesty a player. their salary comes off the books, but team still gotta pay em. so now, you lose Kobe, some other team take him, and you continue to pay Kobe. :facepalm
the ideal solution should've been a trade. but since Kobe is basically untradeable (he can only be traded IF it is his choice) their best bet is to talk some sense into Kobe and make him agree on restructuring his contract. but let's be real now. what kind of egotistical maniac will take a pay cut? not Kobe definitely.
Lakers know this that's why they're just biting the bullet and riding out Kobe's contract.

Why are people mentioning Kobe's contract when Gasol, Bynum, Blake and World Peace all have contracts that are arguably worse relative to their recent performances, importance to the franchise as well as respective roles on the team? His contract has never been a problem before. It really isn't now. Bynum has a 15 million dollar team option and the dude has just played a full (albeit lockout shortened) season for the first time, Pau Gasol is making almost 20 million despite getting outplayed in the previous 2 playoffs by Carl Landry, Kenneth Faried and Serge Ibaka, and people are complaining about Kobe making 28 million? :oldlol:

The Lakers are definetly in a rough spot but I think it's still salvagable. The real problem in my eyes is that Jim Buss has hitched his wagon onto Andrew Bynum. That's the guy we should move. We can still make some moves with our amnesty and trade exceptions. It's gonna take a miracle but I would never say you can't win with Kobe.
If you want to really, really talk about the real problem then harken back to when Stern f**ked us with for basketball reasons. That was coup on Mitch's part. It scewed us with Lamar and Pau. It shit canned our present and our future.
Mr. I'm So Rad
06-24-2012, 11:17 PM
Because Gasol and Bynum are movable.
If they can be moved for pieces that can potentially fix some of the Lakers' problems then what does that have to do with Kobe's contract? They themselves make lots of money and have pretty decent value so it would seem that Kobe's contract is pretty irrelevant.
And I don't know how movable Gasol is. People keep talking about how much he's owed, how old he is and how bad he's been in the playoffs the past 2 seasons.

See now you're thinking. Kobe's salary is not the problem, but when Josh Mcroberts, Artest and Steve Blake combine for 14 million dollars worth of suck that's the real problem. Gasol or Bynum need to be traded and package Artest's and Steve Blakes contracts with them. The big man era of the NBA is dead, it's all about athletic perimeter players and big men with range.

If they amnesty Kobe and fail to put a winning team on the floor they will probably be out attended by the clippers.
More to the point of the article, TJ Simers is very biased but in general I think Kobe needs to step back a bit and make better use of his team mates. He still tries too hard to win games by himself but he doesn't have the stamina to finish anymore. He needs to conserve energy so he's ready for the 4th. Last year he was very un-clutch because he was tired in the 4th quarters. Potato head's rotation (heavy minutes for Kobe) and "system" only made matters worse.
