View Full Version : Atlanta Hawks To Blow Up Roster? Sam Amick

"Well, that didn't take long: with Atlanta GM Danny Ferry in his first day on the job, the message is spreading that he'll be looking to shake up the Hawks' roster and rebuild in some capacity. No specifics yet, but forward Josh Smith has tremendous value and an expiring contract (next season at $13.2 million), center Al Horford will be healthy again and is an attractive piece as well (four years, $48 million remaining) and shooting guard Joe Johnson has the sort of deal that any sane GM would try - and likely try in vain - to get rid of (four years and $89.3 million left)."

Here's what the Hawks need to do:
1. Amnesty Joe Johnson. He's not worth 22 million per season, but for a team like Minnesota he would be worth 13 million. The Hawks then would be 13 million under the cap (right now we are right at the cap). Use that money to spend on another max level free agent.
2. Trade away Marvin Williams. That frees up another 8 million in cap space to use to add a big (Omer Asik would be a nice pick up). Cleveland likes Marvin - send him for 2 2nd round picks.
3. Draft Fab Melo with our first round pick.
4. Re-sign Josh Smith to a max level deal.
5. Get a legitimate back up point guard.
6. Let Hinrich, McGrady, Dampier, Stackhouse go.
7. Re-sign Willie Green, VladRAd, Pargo, Johnson.

Bynum + fillers for Horford + Smith?
 Lakers would stay elite for another 5+ years probably... then again I don't see ATL doing that because it's so lopsided. Horford alone isn't much worse than Bynum and is on a much cheaper contract. Smith is a borderline elite PF.

Actually that isn't a bad deal for the Hawks.
2 expirers for Johnson, giving the Hawks 22 million in cap space in the summer of 2013.
Don't know if the Clippers want that cap clogging contract on their books.

It's not about want though. They would have 3 max deals+DJ's 10 mill which would obviously be impossible :( . I can dream though.

Why would you pay someone 100 Million dollars for nothing???? Joe Johnson can still give you 20/4/4 especially if he went to a bad team like bobcats, kings or suns. He needs to be traded for other smaller bad contracts that are easier to move or expiring contracts. JJ for Magette+Diop would be nice.

If a guy gets amnestied and another team picks him up, the original team only owes the difference.
So the Hawks now are due for about 20 million this year for Joe. If Minnesota bids 13 million, the Hawks pay 7 million this season. The amount changes but it is less the 13 million per season.
The Nets were paying 7 million for Travis Outlaw. The Kings bid 3 million, so the Nets owe 4 million per season until the contract runs out.

Joe Johnson has THE WORST contract in the league. Why? Because it has 4 more years on it.
Here is how they dump JJ on the Lakers.
JJ and Josh Smith
for
Gasol, MWP, Blake
Lakers take on less than $1m in extra salary (however, they are on the hook for JJ for a very long time).
Could either Kobe or JJ play a different position? Probably not.

Does it suck? :confusedshrug:
They get much younger and more athletic.
Also, JJ has played a lot of PG, mostly in his younger years.
However, he is 6-7, 240lbs.
That is a small forward in today's league.

Yes, it sucks. Johnson's contract sucks. We already have one overpaid shooting guard who's killing our cap space. We don't need two. If we want to compete before Kobe retires, we have to fill out our bench and find a legitimate point guard who's willing and able to defer away from Kobe and get the big guys involved.

Thats a Big "IF" if anyone will be paying JJ 13M a year. You are still throwing away 30Million out the door for free by amnestying JJ at that price. I'm not sure if owners are happy about a decision like that. We got to remember at the end of the day, NBA is a business and losing at least 30M is not a good business deal. I still feel there is a trade that can be done for JJ's contract.

Yeah it sucks but Joe Johnson and Josh Smith are a hell of a lot more value than anything else you'd get for Gasol. :confusedshrug: the days of the Lakers being clear title favourites is over, but with the right complimentary pieces around Kobe and Bynum they can still make a run ala the 2011 Mavs.

No, the Hawks are a better team with this trade.
Wesley Johnson and Beasley can run with Teague, which Joe can't do at this point in his career.
Milicic can provide some size off the bench.
This gives us about 5 million in cap space to sign a full MLE level player - another shooter would be nice.
So the Hawks can add 4 players to the rotation with youth and speed.

Morrow and a 1st for Williams? Don't think the Wolves are doing that.
I like Morrow, but not for the 2nd overall pick in the draft who has the potential to be an 18-8 guy.
I'm torn.
On one hand this is a flawed roster. It's not going to get better. So redoing it makes sense.

I'm not going to make an unrealistic trade I will simply say Josh should be moved for young talent or picks. ONLY way Horford is moved is in order to move JJ and (if possible-probably wouldn't be) Marvin. Horford and Teague could be built around within a couple years with some lottery picks/ or multiple young players.
