Not a whole lot of guitar talk 'round here.
Who are your top 5 favorite guitarists? Just your favorites, doesn't necessarily haven't be who you think the top 5 of all-time are. I know my favorites aren't who I think are the top 5.
Mine are...
1. Neil Young
2. J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.)
3. Buddy Guy
4. Dan Auberbach (The Black Keys)
5. Jimi Hendrix
Honorable mention: John Frusciante (ex Red Hot Chili Peppers), Junior Kimbrough, Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Eric Clapton, Duane Allman (The Allman Brothers Band - RIP), and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)

I always think it's weird that Pat Smear is my parents' age. The Foo Fighters came out when I was junior high. I had no idea until a few years ago that he was that old.

You think he could play Blackened (all down picked)?
You think he could play Blackened (all down picked)?
I don't know, Izzy's style is almost minimalist at times, at least it was next to Slash when they were in GNR together. So it can be hard to judge how much he could actually do if he was given free rein, although he seems to prefer being in the background on and off stage. I do know that he wrote a shit load of their songs, more than Slash, and he has some pretty badass rifs on Welcome to the Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, Rocket Queen, and Nightrain (he plays the first solo on Nightrain as well in fact).
Rocket Queen riff: http://youtu.be/c7xQ04nlePM?t=2m22s
Nightrain solo (camera focuses on Slash, but Izzy is the one soloing): http://youtu.be/-Gu3gDhESRY?t=3m29s
James Hetfield may be a technically better player, but I think Izzy is one of, if not the best at keeping the rhythm for his band and he complemented Slash perfectly. Plus he's a ****ing badass:pimp:

It's a matter of preference obviously. Hetfield's style is just so relentless and it fits Metallica perfectly. It gives Kirk's solos a big boost as well.

I'm not gonna look up the song but something being all down picked doesn't seem like it would add difficulty:confusedshrug:
And I'm sure he could play any metallica song and vice versa.
It's very fast so it's easier to alternate pick. Down picking sounds better on a song like that though.
GNR and Metallica toured together back in the day.

Axl was cool until about 1990 then he went insane. To be fair he was sexually abused by his stepdad and has a lot of mental problems. I pity him although he pisses me off by not getting back w/ slash

I have too many but i have one guitarist that will always be my favorite and it's a shame he died young:
Randy Rhoads.
He's the sole reason for why i listen to the Ozzy album 'Tribute' over and over again. Died aged 25 after a plane crash because the pilot decided to buzz of the top of the coach that Ozzy was in and Randy was in the plane dying instantly. Had he not have died, in my opinion he could have become a top 5 all time greatest guitarist ever (although he had stated he wanted to have a classical music degree just weeks prior to his death).

Randy Rhoads is second to Hendrix. **** longevity
Of course, there are the usual suspects like Hendrix, Zappa, Harrison, Howe, Jeff Beck, Nils Lofgren, etc.
A couple many people may not be familiar with but deserve a listen are:

What i was saying was had he lived longer, we would have enhanced his guitar playing skills and would have easily been there...he wasn't in his prime and he was a god. I prefer Rhoads to Hendrix but then again that's more to do with the type of music i listen to.
You have good taste though man.

Marco Sfogli
I really like Kirk Hammet's solo's. Even though he plays most of them in the same minor pentatonic scale and just sticks to that, he has a great feel to his solo's.
Also, this little guy who plays guitar for Unearth. Buz McGrath. Crazy fast, 7 strings, sick and original solo's, great licks. awesome metal guitarist:

You don't have any idea what you are talking about. In the mid 60s when The Band was playing with Dylan, Robbie was just going off. Also when he played with Clapton during The last Waltz he was just went off. Frankly once the "The Band" became the "The Band" and became a serious band he was more about the songwriting and less about his guitar playing, but he was ****ing ace when he wanted to be.
