View Full Version : Why do people say Kobe has high basketball IQ?

I am always baffled when people talk about the highest bball IQ players in the game today, and they bring up Kobe.
Kobe probably takes more bad shots than anyone, and has screwed his 2004 Lakers team away from a championship. So why is it that Russel Westbrook takes bad shots, they say he's dumb, but when Kobe takes bad shots, everyone say his basketball IQ is so high??

he can read defense and do everything else perfectly. look at gm 7 denver. look at footwork. everything
the only problem he might have is he ALWAYS believes he will make his next shot. and i dont mind that at all. 5 rings

Because he sticks his bottom teeth out in aggression which makes him the undisputed clutch performer of his time, with the highest IQ, and the ultimate winner. He has 5 rings, and he sticks his bottom teeth out in aggression. Thats why bitch.

Kobe understands the game well such as the X's and O's, what it takes to succeed, how to succeed, etc.
Kobe's shot selection and decision making is horrible though but I suppose that is considered a different entity to basketball IQ to most people.

First of all kobe skill level is unmatched. However when it comes to ingame decisions,he might be one of the worst superstars we have in NBA today.
That said kobe was a sidekick in the first three rings, you cant credit him like a FMVP him however you cant just just discredit him either. So there is fine line.If winning a ring was the only thing mattered we would be calling horry top 10 player of alltime or no one would rank kobe lower than hakeem or shaq.
Lebron carried his team just like kobe did in 2009 and 2010 or shaq did during 3peat.

It's because if you listen to him in an interview or watch "Kobe Doin Work" you realize that he knows exactly what he should be doing on a basketball court. The issue is that he doesn't execute what he knows...

Just simply pointing out the hilarious hypocrisy in that so called logic. Kobe needed Shaq to win ans much as Shaq needed Kobe. Winning as "the man" or winning as a "sidekick" is just more hater crap designed to try and diminish Kobe's career. Funny how they don't want to apply the same "logic" to Lebron, winning in Miami:rolleyes:

LAClipsFan33 > This.
Kobe's an incredibly smart person. He's also an individualistic sociopath with a Hollywood view of the game (the NBA is a movie, and I'm the hero).
He plays like he's writing a script, which he's brilliant at. Sometimes it'll work (he's developed a rhythm so that what looks like a difficult shot to outsiders is actually easy for him), sometimes it'll lead to him pump-faking four times to turn an open shot into a contested 1-on-3 situation.

Not really.
The gap between lebron and his 2nd option was 6 or so points, in 09 and 10 kobes gap to pau was around 11. With shaq to his "sidekick" it was like 2 or 3 points.
Can't just paint it all with 1 stroke. Kobe was a sidekick to a player who everyone would be a sidekick to.
Kobe has 4 rings as a legit #1 option, 1 as a sidekick but still great. the first one is iffy, but he was extremely clutch (raped reggie millers dreams) so you make it lean towards 5. Its just 5 rings. Its not horrys rings as a 7th option. Its he COULD be a #1 option on another team easily while winning.
example of what I mean:
Put kobes 29 6 5 on 45%.. 37% from 3. . That was his playoff average in 01,02,03. Put him on those nets teams that got swept in the finals. You're telling me he isn't the MAN on that team and contending? So why discredit something like that? Just because he's playing next to the MDE?

Would you say that Kobe was carried to his first ring in the 2000? 15.6 ppg on 37% shooting in the Finals. Shaq averaged 38 on 61% shooting. Went 12-4 without him in the starting line up that same season.

If you're going to try and diminish Kobe's career with b.s. like "oh...well.....He couldn't win w/o Shaq.....he couldn't win w/o Gasol....he couldn't win w/o Jim Buss....He couldn't win w/o the Lakers girls.....He was a sidekick and not 'the man." But when it comes to Lebron it's suddenly "oh...well....he played better than Wade and Bosh so he was "the man" and not a sidekick like Kobe was to Shaq." Really? That's the main problem with double standards. People will ALWAYS be able to see your hypocrisy. Lebron didn't and couldn't win before coming to Miami, so just stop.

Well, I was just referring specifically to the 2000 season. It's not like he was just handed a ring anyway. He played a crucial part in the WCF and I believe it was Game 4 of the 2000 Finals when Shaq fouled out and he took over the game. There's plenty more instances of his effort as well.

The thing about it is, he earned his titles....PERIOD. All this "oh...well...he won this many as a sidekick so they don't count cuz those outnumber how many he won as "the man" crap Is nothing more than a bunch of haters with nothing better to do. Trying to split hairs over nothing. When it's all said and done, what's going to count to anybody that matters is, he won 5 titles. Simple as that.

You're a ****in moron, James would be 2nd fiddle to Shaq too in those years. Doesn't change the fact that Kobe was a superstar in 01 and 02, dominating in the playoffs and being a huge reason for the dynasty. Bosh and Wade is just as much help as Shaq, if not more. Only difference is James is superior to those two.
Fact is Kobe won 2 titles and led his team to 3 finals appearances, he has proven he wasn't just a 2nd fiddle but a legit superstar.
Will James ever prove that? Let's see...
And Kobe always gets discredited by dipshits like you, even when he had Pau people talked about how his front court is so good and giving all the credit to them.

There is no concrete definition of bball IQ. And even if there is, not everyone is using it.
So, everyone will include different things in their own definition of bball IQ.
Is court vision a skill or is it bball iq? How about shot selection? How about footwork in the post?
