View Full Version : Amazes me how anyone would rather watch baseball/soccer over basketball/footbal

Does anyone else feel this way? Maybe I'm being ignorant, but I just don't get how anyone would rather watch baseball or soccer over basketball or football. Two of these sports are clearly more exciting from beginning to end then the other two. I'm not trying to hate or criticize, I just want to understand what exactly would be the appeal for those sports over basketball and football.

There you go then.

What's not to like about soccer? The sport provides an excellent mix of skill, athleticism, passion, IQ, continuous action, team ability, individual ability and strategy.

There is a reason it's by far the most popular spectator sport in the world, and that's because it's extremely entertaining to the open minded spectator.

But it doesn't provide continuous action. They literally can go half the game without one team even coming close to scoring.

Soccer > all.

There have been moments this past year in soccer where the club I support provided entertainment and emotions that I have never ever experienced in any other sport. And, I can't imagine anything ever will. I might have said basketball = soccer before this year, but the stuff I've been through this year related to soccer makes that comparison laughable now.

Yes it does. The game is continuous except for very minor stoppage of plays, injury breaks and halftime.

Action =/= scoring.

I didn't say scoring, I said coming close to scoring i.e. any play of significance. I don't know, I just don't see it. To each his own. I just sometimes meet people that seem a bit surprised that I'm so much into the NBA yet they're big soccer or MLB fans, and I'm just thinking to myself "really?"

The only ball sport i enjoy is Basketball. Football has become terribly boring for me over the years. One of the main things i hate about football is how it seems no player is too valuable. Its hard to get attached to something when everything about it is treated like it can be replaced over night. In basketball it seems players get to have more presence and attach themselves to the brand of the team. With football you can be the best running back one season, and the next an after thought. And there's nothing worst than watching a Football game where a majority of the points came from field goal kicks; so anti-climatic.

I've never liked baseball and don't understand its appeal or label as "america's pastime." Its slower than any other sport, more basic than any other sport, and way longer than it needs to be. Its the main sport where it makes the least sense to penalize players for using roids.

I can occasionally get into soccer, but its also a bit slow in the activity area. What keeps soccer fun to watch is the crowds though. Its like indie/old-ecw wrestling shows where the crowd is half the show. Its also what makes soccer video games so much fun. But because i feel like MLS is the D-league of soccer and that the national teams are just too vast for me to keep track of and know what player is this and that...i can't see myself becoming a regular viewer.

Oddly enough, despite all the action in hockey, every time i've attempted to watch a hockey game on TV i've fallen asleep. Every time.

Tennis can be fun to watch, but i only enjoy it when its women.

No you haven't. If you don't understand the "action" in soccer other than scoring chances you have never truly played or truly watched soccer, nor truly understood it. So much is happening at any given moment.

Professional scouts can usually only keep track of one player a match, and every time they want to scout a different player they'll have to rewatch the entire game.

Yet you can't see the "action" of a soccer game despite you being able to concentrate on any of the 20 players on the pitch, all the different lines and sections of teams, the cohesive movement of a team, the tactical styles of a team, etc etc.

The problem here is probably that you are following the movement of the ball as it happens exclusively. Which could be boring because most of the game happens away from the ball. Someone who has a rudimentary understanding of the sport watches the game with multiple scenarios in his head of what the next steps are going to be. Watches the game with an understanding of what the off the ball movement of both teams is, what it should be, and what might happen in the next 20-30 seconds. I could rant on about the intricacies of the sport for hours, but it would just go way above your head. All this can easily be concluded from your opinion of "there is no action most of the game.".

If I'm ranking how much I enjoy watching each of these PRO (if you include college basketball It would be even with the NFL) sports it's as follows:

1. Soccer
2. Football
3. Basketball

4. Baseball

And there are a lot of stoppages in football, but anyone saying 3 minutes between each play has no idea what they're talking about.

If I could watch any game in person live and at the stadium/field/etc., I would probably pick baseball.

Maybe it is just me but I honestly prefer watching football and basketball games at home and on my TV oppose to at the games.

I suppose I don't mind watching basketball games live depending on the seats and depending on the game but for the most part I do prefer watching it at home. I've always had pretty poor seats when I've attended basketball games. It's always behind the basket..

As for Football, my experience at the game was alright but I still preferred to have watched it at home. I suppose it might have been because every time a team scored it was on the other side from where I was sitting. My seats weren't behind the field goal post or anything like that but it was like at a corner so it did favor a side.

I've never been to a hockey game though but I heard those games are actually the most fun live and they are pretty interesting on TV too.

I agree on Baseball. It only has instances of excitement in playoffs.

Soccer is a crapshoot. If you don't have a team you are rooting hard for, then it just depends on the game. I am a big fan of soccer, but there are 10 minute periods of BS as times and sometimes even entire games where it's just a snoozefest. I'd say it's only a handful of games like that and handful that are really exciting. Most fall in between. When you see an amazing goal in Soccer tho it's one of those things that will make you jump up and shot tho... it's like watching someone severely posterize someone in bball. Those are the moments I watch for... Also soccer is an amazing intricate game and you have to be in crazy good condition to run around for 90 minutes + so I appreciate that.

I love football too but there are snoozefest games too and there are too many ****in commercials too many ****in penalties.

Bottom line, for me, Basketball, Soccer and Football shit on any other sport.

I'll watch most sports from time to time but American Football and Basketball are the only ones I follow closely. Lately I've been trying to get more into Hockey and Soccer but the interest isn't there. A lot of that probably has to do with not fully understanding the strategies and techniques involved.

Football is easily my favorite to watch.

The greater appeal is in the mind of the beholder. Just as you prefer basketball & football, there are millions of people that prefer soccer or baseball and they may think basketball & american football aren't appealing at all.

All professional sports have great appeal to them if the viewer understands the game, or else they wouldn't have fans to support their leagues.

I think appeal to a sport is heightened if you actually play or have played the sport. For example, I know tons of people that can't stand the idea of watching Golf.. But as a golfer.. I love it. I even watch women's golf when its on.. I also play/played baseball, soccer, tennis, hockey, basketball, and football.. so naturally I enjoy watching those as well.

None is more better than the other in my eyes. They are all equally exciting but in different ways.

Every sport becomes more interesting when you practice it or when you know the rules to perfection.

But one thing people may prefer in Football/soccer than NBA basketball is that there are twice 45 minutes of play with no interruption.
I really enjoy NBA, but it can become really annoying to have so many breaks... many of my friends here ask me why I do like a sport in which every close game turns into a never ending Free throw contest... they are not into it and they find that boring.

As for American football, being European give me Rugby all day long.

I don't personally think it's exciting but I think it's a "easy" sport to spectate which is prolly why it has sustained popularity for like a century.

Unlike soccer, as mentioned by LJJ, where important things are happening all over the field. In baseball you can focus exclusively on the ball. And there is a clear sense of failure/success with every play, you either hit or not get a hit, you get thrown out or not thrown out etc. So in some sense it's a game that doesn't require continuous attention and every play is a "mini" game onto itself that's disconnected from what happened before so you can pick up and watch.

Soccer is easily the world's crappiest sport. I don't care what the general consensus is.

The Simpsons writers portrayed it accurately.

Soccer would be better if....
-They made the goal bigger
-They let the players fend each other off
-The field was smaller
-There were 7 players (including a goalie) on each team
-Flopping is punishable by a flogging with a whip at half time.
-There are no draws.
-Games are not decided by glorified contested free throw contests.

Jackass18
07-04-2012, 04:18 AM
Because people like different things. Soccer is ingrained in countries all over the world, people grow up with it, and are beaten over the head with it, so they continue to watch it. It's kind of like religion. They're brainwashed at an early age and then don't know any better when they grew up.

A person's liking of a sport can be greatly hindered if they don't understand the sport and don't know the rules, players, teams and history of the sport.

Well, that's my opinion. I think soccer sucks shit as a sport. People that play it in NZ schools are usually rejects from other sports.

-Penalty shootout is the best way available to decide the winner. The team with the best skill, mental toughness, and a little luck, deserves to win.

Cool, maybe in basketball they can do something like this instead of overtime. Shoot free throws while Dwight tries to goal tend.
