I honestly don't see why not.
Changed the direction of the Hawks.
Best hawk since Nique. I'll always be a fan of JJ.

With a big dollar sign on it instead of his number
If it weren't for his stupid contract he'd be a really good player in this league at the right price

I actually agree. 5 trips to the playoffs, with 3 of them going to the 2nd round. And multiple all-star appearances.

Yeah with the day they traded his contract instead of his jersey number.

It sucks how the max contract is going to overshadow his career. Becuase the guy is still a damn good player. Its not like this was the Gilbert Arenas situation

They should retire Billy King's jersey.
Breaking news:
Hawks sell the retired jersey to Joe Johnson's biggest fan for $2.00

Yes. No doubt about it. 2nd greatest Atlanta Hawks player in their history.
Speaks volumes of how pathetic/irrelevant they have been.
Actually JJ, Smith, & Horford are 3 of the 5 greatest Atlanta Hawks. :lol
They have had other good/great players, but they never lasted long there.

Lou Hudson? Cliff Hagan? Bob Pettit? Honestly, I think John Drew has been better than Joe Johnson as far as accomplishments (minus the drugs and being banned from the league lol)
It's up in the air for me whether they retire the jersey or not. I did like JJ and all that he's done for the Hawks but it wasn't very remarkable in any sense since the Hawks have regularly underachieved as of lately.

Dominique Wilkins says hi.
But yes, he will get his number retired. He is/was the face of the Hawks this past decade really.

They probably should. As a franchise their standards are pretty low and Joe Johnson fits the criteria for "all time great Atlanta Hawk" and god knows they don't come around often.

Lol 2 time MVP Bob Pettit brought the Hawks their ONLY championship. I'd say he was the best of them. Heck, he even beat the Russell Celtics to do it.

Absolutely. Arguably the greatest Hawk of all-time.
jk
Bob Pettit?
I was specifically talking about the Atlanta Hawks.
I knew people would start naming guys pre-merger when they were in St.Louis.

I know you had to use Wikipedia to pull that up.
My point still stands he's the 2nd best Atlanta Hawk.
Petit played for the St.Louis Hawks long before the merger or the move to Atlanta. They've been there for 40 years or so now.
It's like claiming Gary Payton is the best OKC Thunder player.
You are being idiotic.
I guess some of the Lakers championships shouldn't count since they won some of them in Minnesota.

No reason why they shouldn't, but I've always thought that their true impact player was Josh Smith, even if he keeps getting snubbed for the All-Star game.

Doesn't matter if he is the second best Hawk or not... he hasn't done anything worthy of having his jersey retired. Jersey retirements should be for the legends of your team, not merely the best players to ever don your jersey.

He gets a bad rap for his contract, but the guy is a nice player. Easily a top 5 Hawks imo.

It's always interesting to discover how much some posters really don't know about basketball history.
He was talking only of the Hawks time in Atlanta (though I believe it should include all their Hawks days, through St. Louis or otherwise).
I haven't given this much thought yet, but if we go Atlanta only, who are the top five players in Hawks history?
Doesn't matter if he is the second best Hawk or not... he hasn't done anything worthy of having his jersey retired. Jersey retirements should be for the legends of your team, not merely the best players to ever don your jersey.I think there can be a number of different reasons to retire a player's jersey and I think long-standing achievement with one franchise could be one of them. It's tough for me to gauge this one because I personally pay very little attention to the Hawks franchise. I actually had no idea Joe Johnson made six all-star appearances.
Joe Johnson was just lost in space to me. I knew he was out there somewhere, putting up numbers, it just all seemed to be in a vacuum, even when his team succeeded. He reminds me of Mitch Richmond in that regard. Richmond was more noteworthy to me after he retired than he was during his time with the Kings in the mid-90's. Of course, I don't think my attention span is going to have a bearing on their legacies.

Fun fact: Lou Hudson is a cold-blooded killer on NBA2K12. I was planning on Pete Maravich being the guy to stop on that squad, and he is in fact still quite dangerous, but Hudson is something else. Maybe I just caught that Hawks team on a couple of hot days, but Hudson is one of the toughest players I've played against in that game.
