Marc Stein:

In another unforeseen twist of this wild offseason, sources say Jason Kidd has decided to leave Mavs and join Knicks on a multiyear deal.

Mavs were confident they'd close three-year, $9M deal with Kidd but after all-day deliberations w/both teams Kidd has committed to Knicks

In an unforeseen reversal, Jason Kidd has decided to leave the Dallas Mavericks to join the New York Knicks, according to sources familiar with the decision.

With the Mavericks confident that they were closing in Thursday on a verbal agreement on a three-year deal with Kidd worth $9 million, sources told ESPN.com that Kidd -- after all-day deliberations with both teams -- has decided instead to leave Dallas to join the Knicks for a similar deal.

The contract can't actually be signed until July 11, which is the first day new NBA contracts can be signed. It's also possible, one source said, that Kidd could ultimately move to the Knicks in a sign-and-trade deal.

Sources briefed on the matter told ESPN.com that Kidd was ultimately swayed to take the Knicks' offer to come to New York and take on the challenge of trying to help the Knicks move into the Eastern Conference and also mentor fans darling' Jeremy Lin.

BTW for all you Dallas fans :facepalm 'ing this might be a blessing in disguise for the Mavs. What did Kidd average these past 2 seasons? Was it somewhere around 5/5/3 on 42% or something like that?

He played a part in the Dallas championship but it wasn't like he played a super significant role. That championship was more about the entire team has a whole stepping up. Kidd was probably the 4th or 5th best/most impactful player on the Mavs that season. I remember Barea having better games than Kidd.

Also lol @ Knick fans celebrating over every little pickup.. I really feel sorry for that franchise.. especially since I'm kind a knicks fan. And don't fool yourselfs.. Kidd is nowhere near Nash at this stage in his career.

...where the hell did Mayo and Camby come from?
He is just trying to create a team that can beat the Heat because he is threatened that LeBron will surpass Kobe's legacy soon if the Heat continue to win.

With that being said, I don't know why Dallas fans are mad. Kidd is not the difference between a playoff team and a non playoff team. He isn't THAT good anymore. He is still a serviceable PG and will probably backup and mentor Lin. His role will probably be very limited.

great pickup considering we had to deal w/ the likes of B-Diddy and M-Bibby.

Kidd will be an excellent mentor to Lin, and he even though he's old, and has fallen off quite a bit recently, he is a future HOFer, a great teammate, and knows how to orchestrate.

Plus, one of the better defensive point guards in the league.

It's very possible this will be a sign and trade with Dallas. Something like Toney Douglas + $3 million cash + 2nd rounder. What that would do is save the mini-MLE for someone else....like a Marcus Camby, OJ Mayo or Randy Foye....

So right now the Knicks' options are to either sign Felton or match Lin. If the Knicks are as stupid as many people say they are they will pick Felton over Lin but if they are actually smart about this, they will pick Lin over Felton.

Lin never signed an offer sheet to Houston though, so hopefully the Knicks don't have to match anything.

This will be good for New York in short Term. It's not like we are asking big mintues from him. His knowledge of the game will be be Key to developing Jeremy Lin and even JR Smith if he returns.

I'm not saying they are going to beat the Heat but (big ifs) if we stay healthy and have a good training camp they can be very competive in the east. A top 3-4 team in the east perhaps?

Keeping Lin, JR, Novak and Jefferies plus adding Kidd and potentially someone for up to $6 mil... yeah with a full training camp and staying somewhat healthy, I'd say top 3 is realistic.

Indiana might be better with Hibbert, but he might be gone. Boston is essentially the same team with Terry (probably replacing Allen) but older. Chicago is nothing without Rose. Atlanta is a borderline playoff team now. Philly is average. Brooklyn could be nice but nothing more than the 4th seed.

After Miami there's a HUGE drop off. We actually blew out Indiana twice and then the third game blew like a 20 pt lead against them.

Jason Kidd is my favorite player ever. I'm a Nets fan. I hate it from that perspective. But this is a GREAT move for the Knicks. I see no downside.

- He's a great backup PG. Passes the ball and plays defense.
- He mentors Lin and helps him becomes better.
- Carmelo Anthony cannot scoff at this guy. He demands respect and may help tame him.

People are acting as if the Knicks are relying on Jason Kidd to be the point guard of old. They specifically want him to mentor Lin and eat up 17-22 minutes a game. He can still get the ball to Chandler, Amare, and Melo in a variety of ways. It's a great pickup by the Knicks. My concern is that the money was so minimal that he could have went to the Nets for one million a year less. I guess he wants to retire with a Knicks-Nets rivalry at it's finest.

Knicks will match anything for Lin.

I think it's the best possible pg outcome for them. You get a pretty inexpensive veteran that has gas in. the tank, who can play 25 min or less and make an impact without benching Lin. Can be a team mentor, as well as lin tutor, and further the focus on defense the team has. Can also stretch floor with 3 along with organize offense.

But, they get to keep Shumpert which really helps their depth and versatility. Kidd can also help defend 3 positions (not that well anymore, but still can help). Pretty strong move here

Funny to see me rooting against Kidd to get his second ring, for a hardcore Kidd fan since 2001. Oh well, why bother with it knowing he cant anyway.

Seriously, a laker fan? At least Knicks didn't fork out 4 picks so that a old man could get more money.

That really sucks for Dallas. I don't see Kidd performing too well so late in his career, but he'll definitely be a good player to back up Lin.

Sick.....he is going to be a great mentor for Jeremy Lin.

Payton mentored Kidd and now Kidd will mentor Lin.

Too late :lol

:confusedshrug: How is it too late? Knicks just matched Lin's offer so now he will be his tutor/mentor for sure.

As a Mavs fan, sucks for him to go. But as J-Kidd fan, I wish nothing but luck in the future.

To people who judge by his stats, saying he sucks, he's old so he can't play etc. Kidd's influence goes beyond his stats. When he played for us, it was clear as day and night the difference he makes orchestrating the offense. Our entire offense flowed much better and more consistent when he was on the court compare to when he was off it.

I'm sure he'll do well backing up Lin or whoever, or even in games where he might even start. As long as the coach gives the freedom to Kidd to run his offense some of the times, the Knicks will no doubt benefit from his addition.

His body is falling apart. He's done. I don't care about his "influence". He was awful last season. AWFUL

Obviously, he isn't the player he used to be. (Even going back to the microfracture surgery he had around 2004, that was the start of him really declining imo). But he isn't as "awful" as you think. Kidd was the only one that truly got the ball to Dirk last season, Carlisle also gave certain freedom for Kidd to run his own offense, allowing him to make calls himself etc like player-coach and he did well.

I mean, don't expect Kidd to be a game-changer, someone who slashes and scores, goes to the basket, getting and-1 etc. He will be someone that will bring up the ball, orchestrate the offense and making sure Knicks make that extra pass to get a better look. He'll bring composure and leadership to this team, being a mentor to Lin and Amare and Melo will all benefit from Kidd imo.

Kidd can still ball. Very solid addition.

Because L.A picks are so valuable right? :oldlol: Please you and I both know that Kupchak pulled a brilliant move. "Old Man" who can ball better than most of the league :oldlol:

Yeah, those picks, around 28-60, were going to be sooo valuable to a contending team full of veterans.

Pretty good offseason so far for the Knicks. They can keep Novak too right?

Yes they can match anything he is offered by other teams. Once they finalise the S&T for Kidd they will still have the mini MLE (3.07Mill) & Bi-Annual Exception (1.9Mill) to use on other pieces.

Well, technically, there's nothing to match. Steve Novak is unrestricted free agent. But Knicks have his Early Bird rights, which means they can sign Novak for anything up to MLE money, regardless of salary cap.

So basically, if Novak and Knicks want this to work, they can pay him.
