He's been crap for awhile, but this is golden for Miami. He can still shoot the 3 and will be ideal for their small ball at the 4 as a stretch. Him and Ray are going to get lots of open shots.

Who is Rashard Lewis?

After playing his first nine seasons for the Seattle SuperSonics, Lewis joined the Orlando Magic, having agreed to a six-year sign-and-trade deal worth $118 million on July 11, 2007.[1] On May 25, he had opted out of the last two years of the seven-year, $60 million deal he signed before the 2002-03 season. The final two years of his contract were worth a guaranteed $21 million.
That Rashard Lewis... :lol

Can he still shoot the three?

Last year he shot 24% from behind the arc. The last 5 years his three point shooting has went down each year consecutively.

If it's true I felt it was a bad move. James Jones can do exactly what Lewis can at this point of his career and probably better. Not to mention Jones can take a charge or two.

Rashard is a legitmate stretch four. All the others are either 2's/wings.

Lewis fits right into Miami playing 'small'. With LeBron in the game, he's pretty much interchangable at either forward posistion. Versatility is the key.

Done as what? A legitimate starting PF/SF? Definetly.

Done as a reserve who can contribute in 15-25 MPG off the bench? No way.

The spotlight wont be as heavy on him now that he has that massive contract off his back. For the minimum, if he can give you 8 points/4 rebounds off the bench there wont be much to complain about.

Kendrick Perkins & Serge Ibaka are "superior bigs"? :coleman:

Perkins can't do anything on offense and was a liability.

Im talking about Miami facing a true low post option at Center, like a Dwight Howard or Andrew Bynum. Miami had trouble with Roy Hibbert too. They don't have anyone to put at Center but Chris Bosh and he's more of a PF.

TMT
07-10-2012, 05:06 PM
Expected signing. He'll provide another shooter off the bench. At this point not much of a defender though. Surprised Miami hasn't gotten any bigger, since that appears to be their biggest weakness. I doubt Kaman signs with them for the minimum, the guy is worth waaaay more and is only 30 year old.

I think Bosh could've handled Hibbert pretty easily. That being said, Hibbert is a big stiff.

Bynum and Howard are probably the only two big low post threats to the Heat, and if your only real weakness is to two players, then your odds are pretty good. If the Lakers end up being the best in the West and Howard goes to the Nets though, all of a sudden you may have a problem because you're going to have to beat both of those teams to repeat.

Double paychecks must be the best feeling in the world.

Let's analyze this. He is overpaid and did a poor job, so poor that he was not needed anymore. So he gets his old salary plus a new salary (so he lost nothing) and moves from a shit team to a great team, and on the great team because they only pay him a little, they expect less from him.

Miller should retire. It was painful watching him run up and down the court in game five. I wouldn't be surprised if he has to have surgery on his back and knees this summer. The guy broke the record for most threes in a Finals game or something... there's no better way to go out.

Rumor has it that Joel Anthony and Norris Cole will be involved in a sign and trade with New Orleans for Chris Kaman. This along with the Lucas III singing, the Heat are in good shape.

Chalmers | Lucas IIII
Wade | Allen | Miller
James | Jones | Lewis
Bosh | Haslem
Kaman | Pittman

Where did you hear this rumor, would make some sense for the Hornets i guess and no Battier in Rotation?

Can he still shoot the three?

Last year he shot 24% from behind the arc. The last 5 years his three point shooting has went down each year consecutively.

No it didn't. But he did shoot poorly last season, I'm not sure if its injury related or whether he forgot how to shoot.
I like the signing, I don't know how much he will play or how good he will be, but I think he will get opportunity early on to show something.

Who's going to guard Dwight or an improved Amare/Chandler? I thought that their top priority coming into the season would be improving the front court, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm not saying they absolutely need one to compete or anything but it would certainly help their already solid team defense to have a man in the middle patrolling the paint. But hey, if they don't want to go that route they will still be top dog obviously. But there are certain teams in the league who can take advantage of a Bosh/Haslem/Anthony/Turiaf frontline imo.

The defensive scheme requires speed at the five to cover out to shooters and switch on to smaller players. Bosh/Haslem/Anthony are all quick and range from good to very good man on man, and are excellent help defenders. They fit the scheme well.

It was only exposed for a short time when the Celtics plonked KG inside and threw it high to him with Bron and Haslem fronting, but when Bosh returned they couldn't do it anymore, he kept intercepting and deflecting and positioning perfectly to stop it.

If Lewis can find form behind the line, and actually plays in the scheme well with his quick 6'10 frame, he could be a very valuable role player for the Heat.

A 7 footer patrolling the paint actually hurts the scheme. Basically Chandler would be the only one that could play big minutes, and he is DPOY on $60m in far away lands.

StateOfMind12
07-10-2012, 07:26 PM
I already saw this coming so this isn't much of a surprise. I don't expect a whole lot from him but it's a low-risk pickup so it's a good one. He will be a great replacement for Jones/Miller.

Lewis is an underrated defender though so don't just expect him to shoot 3s and if he is off he won't do anything to impact the game.

Don't know. The Heat were tested a couple times in the playoffs against Hibbert and KG, and even though they were missing Bosh for a chunk of those series, I don't think he's the exact last piece to their defensive puzzle. Not all bigs try to get the ball at free throw line extended, but that was what appeared to work for KG with a lack of length on the interior. And KG wasn't just effective at those times, he was dominant. I can't really comment much on the Pacers series. At the time I was moving and I missed the entire second round of the playoffs except for a few Spurs games during that time.

In my opinion even having a guy like Camby off the bench would be a nice asset to have in key situations. I don't think the defensive scheme they used in their championship run will work on every single team in the NBA per say. They had preferred matchups in most of the series they went through that worked for them rather well. But I think against elite bigs who can score in the post they will have trouble.

Low risk, high reward as in you pay him small money and you don't expect him to do shit.. And if he plays a bit better than the non motivated and injured Rashard from Washington then thats a reward already.

And don't forget, he'll be taking Juwan Howards spot, both on the bench and in salary. And since Juwan never go to play, its a reward already.

People swear Miami just signed '09 Lewis.

We just want him to be '10-11 Lewis. A ~.350 3pt shooter than can stretch at the 3 or 4. Considerings he's going to be getting tons of open shots, will be playing in a winning culture, and doesn't have the pressure of that salary weighing over his head... I wouldn't be surprised if he had a really rejuvenated year... And if he doesn't, we only paid 1.3 for him.

Also, for all the guys saying we need size or a center, we don't. The Heat embraced small ball up tempo play with versatile wings that can all play multiple positions to create matchup problems. There are so few dominant centers in the league anyway, we can just deal with what they get and try and counterpunch with mismatches when we're on offense

Bottom line is we aren't going to pick up anyone who can truly mitigate Howard, so we might as well play bigs that can force him out of the paint defensively (Bosh, Lewis).

Im over it now in the sense he is a knick. But i still dont think he gives two shits about winning. Either way, people are acting like I think all free agent should sign with the Heat for the Minimum. Im talking more along the lines of vets with less than 3 years left (Lewis, Allen, camby etc). I mean the guy had Houston #1 on his list to return. The same Rockets who are rebuilding and about to sign Asik. If its about family or money, so be it. But you can't tell me with a straight face winning basketball games is high on his list of priorities.
