View Full Version : NBA height listing inconsistency thread

bad height listing just drives me crazy. it just makes my favorite organization look like a WWE. I just hate that. why can't they be more professional about it? the listing is all over the place. some with barefoot height, some with height w/shoe on, some neither. NBA should take this seriously because people really do believe Kevin love is 6ft 10.

i'll start with the usual

1.Tyreke Evans was measured at 6ft 4 barefoot, but listed at 6ft 6
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Tyreke-Evans-1110/
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/tyreke_evans/

2. Kevin Love was measured at 6ft 7 3/4 barefoot, but listed at 6ft 10
http://www.draftexpress.com/search.php
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/kevin_love/

3. kevin durant is listed at 6ft 9 barefoot, and nba listing is also 6ft 9
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kevin-Durant-390/
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/kevin_durant/

who else?

* I know some of these players could have grown 1/4-1/2 inch maybe even up to full 1 inch, but these NBA listing came out right after they were measured barefoot.

I read somewhere the Hedo Turkoglu was the tallest player on the Magic, even taller than Dwight. Can anyone confirm this?

Why is it so difficult to understand that they round up and typically list players height with shoes on?

Kevin Love was 6"9.5 in shoes, you want them to round down or list his height without shoes? Maybe Evans is now 6"5 and 3/4th in shoes, should they round down?

D-Wade.

Measure at 6'3.75" barefoot and 6'4.75" with shoes. He's listed at 6'4... they always round up for .5 and not to mention most guys get shoes that give them more than an inch.

And for Durant, I'd assume he didn't want to be listed as 6'11" so he wouldn't have to play PF... but considering he played SG his rookie year (IIRC), it's irrelevant.

i believe evans was listed at 6ft 6 in his first year. so your theory is not true. you can't round up 6ft 5 1/4 to 6ft 6.

and durant with shoe on was 6ft 10 1/4, why he isn't listed at 6ft 10?

and what happens when a player shows up with 2 inch thick shoe?

have you see shaq shoes? why isn't shaq listed at 7ft 3?

i remember seeing shaq's reebok shaq attack 1 in the store. actual size 23. that thing was easily 2 inch thick. maybe more.

definitely for size 15+. i'm a casual sneakerhead, and most of my nikes(size 11.5-12) gives me 1 1/2 inch lift when i first buy them and it gradually goes down to 1 1/4 inch. hyperdunk, hyperfuse, kobe, jordans and etc. i think one is usually with air max.

no doubt shaq's clown size 23 shoe is easily 2 1/4 inches thick.

I go back-and-forth on this issue. Sometimes I enjoy it an other times I feel like it's a very dumb and pointless thing to discuss; because, let's be honest, who cares if a player was measured at 6'6.75" w/o shoes, but is listed at 6'9"?

It's up to the team to list the heights of their players, they are just going to round up and go with the height in shoes. There's inconsistency because there's no mandate on accurate listings, because it's really not important to be honest.

If these guys heights were listed without shoes, people who meet them would say "Xyz is taller than he was listed at, Im 6"3 and met Dwyane Wade and he was taller than me".

We have draftexpress now, we know what most of these guys heights are with or without shoes.

die hard fans like myself do care. it's like finding out santa clause doesn't exist. i was extremely disappointed when i found out patrick ewing wasn't a legit 7fter.

and it just makes NBA look like a 2nd rate organization. NFL does a great job being very accurate.

i'm 6ft 2 in the morning 6ft 1 1/2 at night(i've had herniated disc 3 years ago). i would've been listed at 6ft 4 if i was measured in the morning because I sometimes put dr. scholl to ease my backpain when i hoop which adds another 1/2 inch to my 1 1/2 inch thick nike.

good find. 70 out of 300 million americans? wow. that's very rare.

and we have so many fake 7fters. I know this 16 year old kid in Norcross, GA claiming he is 7ft. he looks to be about 6ft 9. but he has ridiculously huge fro and wears a clown shoes, so he can look like a 7fter from far. i also play hoop with 6ft 9 dude here in chicago, who looks exactly like drew gooden. but actually he is more like 6ft 6 1/2. but he would refuse to admit he is not full 6ft 9. and there are a lot of dudes who just adds inch or two to their height.

i guess some people are just very insecure. i think kevin love is one of them.

It's not always the case. For instance, Kyrie Irving was measured at 6'3.5" at the combine with shoes.

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Kyrie-Irving-5735/

Conventional logic would mean listing him at 6'4". Yet, he's listed by the NBA at 6'3".

It does seem that, in general, the way you explained it is the way that the heights are listed the NBA. But there are quite a few inexplicable exceptions, which make it feel a bit more random.

u should be more concerned about the fact u invest such a big deal into a number, omg he isn't 7 foot hes no longer the player i thought he was.....its your own irratioanlity, your inability to accept things arn't perfect that is the problem, not the inconsistency in height, which lets face it, is an issue in every single sporting organization in the world.

Also its not totally out way, humans can shrink upto over an inch a day which they then regain during sleep when the spine decompresses. Height fluctuates a lot for these taller dudes especially.

No, not all diehard fans like yourself care, especially this much. I'm a diehard NBA fan and I don't really care that much.

I get it, this stuff fascinates you, as it does other NBA fans, but after reading some of your posts in this thread, your obsession with heights is borderline creepy.

Disappointed because you found out Ewing wasn't a legit 7-footer? So what? He could still ball, so him being closer to 6'10" than 7'0" shouldn't have been extremely disappointing. It's not like he was your favorite player and you found out he had a rare disease or something.

Only 70? Wtf?
Few years ago there was a similar research for countries of former Yugoslavia and there was like 150+ people who were at least 6'11''. Those countries have population of approximately 16 million people. There is probably even more tall people, because the research gathered their information mostly through sport clubs (basketball and volleyball)...

This topic has been brought up before, but for those that rip the 60's as a decade of very few seven-footers...

had the players back then been measured in shoes, and there would have been some 20 seven-footers in that span...and in leagues of eight to 14 teams.

Furthermore, Chamberlain was over 7-1, and Kareem was nearly 7-2 (and there are those that would claim both were even taller than that)...but had they been measured in shoes, Chamberlain would have been at least 7-3, and Kareem over 7-3. And Wilt had a 7-8 wingspan, too. And one of the more amazing stories of that time, was that Nate Thurmond, who was listed at 6-11, and would surely be over 7-0 by today's measuring methods, had a higher standing reach than Chamberlain.

I'm 6-5 and I was almost his height. I think he is measured at 6-10 or 6-11' when he played, but realistically he's maybe 6-7 or 6-8 at the tallest, wasn't much taller than me, honestly.
