View Full Version : Dave Chappelle -vs- Eddie Griffin: Who U Got?

After watching both of these men over the past 15+ years, I have come to the conclusion that Eddie Griffin is a greater stand up performer than Dave Chappelle.
http://www.makems.com/celebrities/picture/dave-chappelle-eddie-griffin
While Dave obviously had a higher peak, Griffin has been putting out consistent stand up material for a long, long time. Dave is the better side man in films though, like in Nutty Professor, Blue Streak and even Undercover Brother with Eddie Griffin.
Dave has just 3 stand up specials compared to 7 for Eddie Griffin.

Chappelle and it's not even close. The dude is a comedic genius. Not only are his stand up's funny, but his show was f***in hilarious and every role he's ever played in a movie was hilarious.

Didn't Griffin smash up some Ferrari or some shit? Dude just came off as a tool IMO from the beginning - whereas D.C. was on-point since Half Baked fast-forward. This one's a no-brainer.

Half-Baked fast forward is only what 6 years. He was done after 2004 basically.
Griffin crashed a ferrari tryin to race on the set of some film, haha.
Still, have y'all not seen Dysfunktional Family or You Can Tell Em I Said It or VooDoo Child? Those are required stand up films. Chappelle's best was Killing Them Softly and his 97 Comedy Half Hour on HBO.

I'm guessing you made this thread with the hope that people would say Eddie Griffin? :oldlol:
I like them both but Chappelle is clearly funnier. Eddie Griffin is good, but Chappelle is better, and most people would agree. Chappelle Show set a new standard in (black) sketch comedy that still hasn't been duplicated after try after try from Comedy Central. Eddie Griffin...was in Undercover Brother (where he was outperformed by Chappelle even in that) and had a short-lived UPN series with Theo.
As far as standup goes, someone else said it best. You see Griffins and they're funny the first time, but have no rewatchability if you'll excuse the made up word. I watch Dave's and they're funny every time

But in stand up, it's Griffin. He speaks on many topics. His stand up set on Jesus, Moses and the bible ect is genius.

In what world would only 10 stand-ups equate to 1% of 100? There have been thousands of stand-ups; ergo, that 1% of performances better than Dave's "Killin' Them Softly" don't limit themselves to a mere 10. There are definitely dozens funnier, but that just means they are funnier than 99% of stand-ups, too.
I've seen Eddie Griffin's stand-up. He's a funny guy, but like I said, Dave's one performance alone shits on too-many-to-list others.

By 99%, that means you think it's one of the all time great performances caught on tape.
You didn't say 50%, hell not even 75% you said 99%. That basically means you think Killin' Them Softly is in the upper echelon of stand up performances.

Killing them softly was the greatest standup show ever. When you mix comedy with cold hard truth that everyone knows deep down, you get something special.
Shoulda compared Patrice O'Neal to Chapelle, they are much closer than Griffin/Chapelle.
Griffin has done more but Chappelle made me chuckle more, i rate all his specials 8-9 of 10. I can do that only for one Eddie Griffin special and that is Voodoo Child.
Man what a shame... Chappelle was so gifted, reminded me alot of Richard Pryor.

So if Chappelle has, let's say two 8's and one 9.
And Griffin has one 9 and a bunch of 7's, wouldn't you give that to Griffin?

Wow, Dysfunk Family and You Can Tell Em I Said it, 6/10? :biggums:
I have Pryor first of course. Than Rock, Cosby, Murphy, Redd Foxx, Martin Lawrence, Damon Wayans, Dave Chappelle, Flip Wilson and Dick Gregory. That's my top ten.
Mooney, Griffin than Hughley right after the ten.
I don't think Griffin is greater than Chappelle. I just wanted to show Griffin props and prove how overrated Chappelle is. He is not that far off from Chappelle, and you can make a great argument to put Griffin over Chappelle and know eye's should role.

Back to Griffin....... I am not 100% sure what it is with Griffins latest specials for me, but you know how some standup comedians get funnier and funnier with age... like Carlin/Pryor ... well Griffin doesnt do that for me, in the 90s he was young and in the middle of the hip-hop generation, his material & delivery was just like that, funky, wild, stylish and COOL and he used to do so much funny physical/slapstick stuff aswell... that doesnt work anymore, he has growed up, this is a new era, he cant be that guy anymore.... It feels like to me he is one of those guys that really need to be at the right moment and at the right time....

I'm the opposite, I think he actually got better with age. Of course, he reachin 50 and is not as nimble as he was on that HBO One Night Stand he did back in the day, but his stand up seems much smarter. He's very consistent.
He's always been deep, like his routine on the Bible that lasted basically the whole 30 minutes. That was genius and he was just 24-25 when he did that. You Can Tell Em I Said It, had some deep material in it.
Hell, Chappelle's first two were better than his last For What It's Worth.

What's your take?
You are vastly overrating the importance and significance of a "special".
A "special" is no different than a regular show, except there is a camera crew there.
For instance, Chappelle has been doing stand up around the country for the past few years, and from various youtube clips I've seen, the sh*t is hilarious. But according to you it doesn't count, because he never officially called up a camera crew to make these shows into "specials".

Never said it didn't count. But a special is where various people who don't go to a comedy show can get a glimpse of the performer.
