As we all know, the first player that always comes to peoples minds is Magic Johnson.... but was he really the tallest guy to play point-guard? The answer is actually more closer to NO...

First of all... lets get Magic Johnsons height straight...
Magic Johnson was measured 6'8"-215 lbs in the 1979-80 draft (http://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_1979.html) and that is forever his official listed height at basketball reference (which is correct and the only correct height of his, this is in shoes aswell)...

Magic was later even measured 6'7" 1/2 during 1992 Olympics:

http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?page=14&t=41072

Another important thing that is important to know about Magic Johnson:
Even though Magic is listed as a PG he was actually not drafted as PG and didnt start PG at all until 1983, he was drafted Guard-Forward, he never started the point-guard position for the Lakers until 1983, Norm Nixon was the Lakers starting PG from 1979 up to 83 while Magic Johnson was starting SF/SG during that time and was playing exactly as you see example Lebron James and Lamar Odom today (point-forward)... he was a Point-Forward who later officially became listed as a PG due to starting that position most of his career....

He was not 6'9"... have no idea where that came from, there is zero facts on him being 6'9" based on draft measurements, olympic measurements and pictures compared to other 6'8-6'9 players...

Who were the tallest point-guards in NBA history? Do we include Point-Forwards or do we only include those that were listed as PGs? How about we do both....

Tallest players that ever officially played PG (point-forwards do exactly that, some of them sometimes even start PG like Lebron):

1. Sun Yue (6'9 barefoot, 6'10 in shoes legit) - PG / Point-Forward
2. Lamar Odom (6'10) - Point-Forward
3. Hidayet Turkoglu (6'10) - Point-Forward
4. Larry Bird (6'9 legit) - Point-Forward
5. Lebron James (6'8) - Drafted PG-SG / Point-Forward
6. Tracy McGrady (6'8) - Point-Forward
7. Magic Johnson (6'7-6'8) - PG / Point-Forward
8. Shaun Livingston (6'7) - PG
9. Penny Hardaway (6'7) - PG/SG
10. Scottie Pippen (6'7) - Point-Forward

Tallest players that were officially listed as PGs

1. Sun Yue (6'10)
2. Magic Johnson (6'8)
3. Shaun Livingston (6'7)
4. Penny Hardaway (6'7)
5. Marko Jaric (6'7)
6. Tyreke Evans (6'6)
7. Ron Harper (6'6)
8. Rodney Stuckey (6'5)
9. Jamal Crawford (6'5)
10. John Wall, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd and a couple of others (6'4)

No matter how you twist and turn it, SUN YUE was the tallest Point-Guard in NBA history.... short & disappointing career, but that doesnt take away from him being the tallest true NBA point-guard or point-forward...

I heard a talk once of Kevin Garnett back in his younger Wolves days used to play alot of Point-Guard aswell? Can anybody confirm this or better yet give some sources on this? That would make Kevin Garnett that tallest at least point-forward in NBA history at 6'11...

magic isnt the only guy with an inflated height...

all those other guys are inflated a few inches aswell

fact is magic is the tallest guy ever listed at PG

those point forwards were never in the starting linup as "pg"

even kobe played pg and sg for the past decade... fisher was the real sg because kobe did all the play making and fish was a black hole

(Yes, i know about Kobe.. but he is 6'6, so he still doesnt earn a top 10 spot above on the comboguard or point-forward list)

Joe Johnson Boris Diaw.

Boris Diaw was able only to do a bit of Point-Forwarding in Europe/France, but he never played Point-Forward in the NBA level, sometimes maybe ofcourse its normal to bring the ball up, but his point-forward skills were not enough in the NBA for the coaches to officially give him that role (mostly because of his balhandling) and was nowhere near to touch the PG position in any shape or form in the NBA... he very rapidly became more like a true PF...

Joe Johnson? I am not really sure, he will do sometimes a bit of point-forward stuff... but thats about it...

Lebron James, Lamar Odom, Hidayet Turkoglu and Tracy McGrady are the only true point-forwards in the NBA, they are given those roles officially by their coaches understand? They play like that 24-7... they even started PG sometimes... Lebron started PG the most out of this bunch to the productive/efficient point where coaches even begged him to officially start PG (he didnt want that), infact during the stretch Mo Williams was injured in 2009 Lebron started 14 games in a row at PG and averaged 29-8-12 (12 assists), but also Tracy McGrady lately who mind you started PG for the Pistons almost the entire year in 2010-11 remember?

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Sun-Yue-1024/

so technically he is as tall as Magic. I have magic at 6ft 7 1/2, but maybe their actual height could be same because magic is bald, and yue has thick hair.

oh by the way,

bron - 6ft 7 1/4
tmac - 6ft 6 1/4

Boris Diaw is a legit point forward who did play the position in the NBA.

The correct answer to "tallest player to ever play point guard in the NBA" would probably be Lamar Odom, especially in his early days, though you could make a good argument for Turkoglu as a point.

If you define a point guard not as someone who consistently brings the ball up, but someone who's the primary distributor on the team and orchestrates the offense, then you've got several 7 foot "points" such as Wilt, Walton, Divac, Gasol...

It's way too broad because guys like Melo and Iggy have played plenty of point forward but you wouldn't call them point forwards?

Btw, I always thought Sun Yue had a lot of potential. He was on the Lakers, but he really should've been a bad team to try to get some playing time.

I don't think he ever got a ring, if you're speaking about Sun Yue. They waived him before the playoffs.

The Lakers might have given him a ring anyway. Championship teams can be pretty generous when they're deciding who did enough to earn a ring. Brandon Williams appeared in 3 games for the '99 Spurs, played a grand total of 4 minutes in garbage time when the Spurs were up by double digits... and he got a ring.

He was listed as 6'8" in college and played point guard. He was listed as forward and only guard there too, but he still accounted for almost all of MSU's assists. The NCAA has him officially listed a PG in college. An example of just arguing semantics. Magic led the Lakers in assists every year except his rookie season and sophomore year. His second year he missed all but 37 games. This isn't hard to understand if you realize that Norm Nixon was also a top PG prospect and first round pick that the Lakers drafted in 1977. Nixon was very good player in his own right. He made the all-star team in 1981. Magic was rookie and had to beat him out. Pretty simple.
