View Full Version : Do You See the NBA Trying to Market Irving/Wall Rivalry

Wall was a pretty hyped prospect. People were even saying he could be better than Rose. Remember the hype he got after his 1st NBA game? Irving on the other hand was arguably the most slept on #1 pick ever. He was getting Mike Conley comparisons :oldlol: Now it seems things have changed. Irving is becoming that superstar that Wall was supposed to be. Commercials, charisma, and one of the smoothest offense games we have seen in awhile. Do you see the NBA marketing this as a rivalry? Or is Wall just too inferior to really bother?

They'd be wasting their time. They should wait 2-3 years see if he actually challenges Rose/CP3/Westbrook and market that.

Wall is FAST and can slash. With that said, Kyrie had a better season than Wall last year as a rookie and will most likely continue to have better seasons. Wall shot below %10 from 3 last year. If he can work on his shooting he will be good, but Irving has already got the tools. He is gonna be top 5 this year, while i dont think wall is top 10. Irving could become better than Rose even if he wasnt injured. Dude is going to be a beast in years to come. Look forward to him developing more than any other rookie or 2nd year player.
BTW, off topic, Mike Conley jr has developed into a very good PG. I know it took him a season or two, but he IMO is better than wall and is only getting better. He averaged 13pts, 7 assist/2tos, and was 2nd in steals only to CP3 with 2.2 per game. Great defender. I know he isnt superstar, but he is a perfect pg to run the offense which is almost all through Gay, Zbo, and Gasol. He was probably our best 3pt shooter and had plenty of games that showed he can put up 20 a night if needed. Extremely underrated . We had no back up for him last year forcing him to play 40mpg in the playoffs. Our lack of a backup is why we lost in the 1st round. Now that we acquired Bayless from Toronto, he should be more efficient than he already is next year.

i was hoping wall could be jkidd number two... he can get triple doubles in the right situation... but the basketball iq will never reach that high.

Honestly, Wall is a closer to rival to Jeremy Lin than he is to Kyrie Irving.

Is this some Great Wall of China joke you're trying to make here?

Too many good PGs in the league to make a singular rivalry.
When have Kobe vs McGrady vs Carter....that's easy to do.
Or Shaq vs Yao vs Dwight
But here, you have Rose, Wall, Westbrook, Irving, then you slightly older Paul, Rondo and Williams to mix.
The Paul vs Williams rivalry was clear when there werent too many good young PGs at the time.

I will say this, Wall is the fastest player I ever saw. And I can't say there is someone more ambidextrous than him. If Washington plays a running game he COULD jump right to the top. If he ever gets the green light like Kidd and Nash got he's going to be unstopable and he has purer PG instincts than all of the newer point guards. But there is an "if" there. There seems to be no "if's" with Kyrie. Can't really see him scoring like Westbrook and Rose just yet, and he isn't as pure PG as Wall. But I see Kyrie with a great blend of both. Kyrie isn't as athletic as those guys but he's smart and has a great sense of the game and, perhaps, with better skills.
Wall is in the super athletic PG category with Rose and Westbrook.
Wall is also in the purer poing guard category with DWill and CP3
Wall also has the capacity to be a 20ppg scorer
Kyrie is in the scoring PG category with Rose and Westbrook.
Kyrie is in the great penetrating tradition of Rose and young CP3
Kyrie is a leader, finisher and will be a very good passer.
Both are growing but Kyrie is ahead already but once Wall's confidence gets going he can catapult to the top.

We will see Wall's potential next year since he will be surrounded by decent veterans rather than young inexperienced players. I was really hoping Wall would turn out to be an elite player but his development was hindered by playing in Washington these past few seasons.

There might be more of a rivalry between them than any other PG rivalry because of the teams they play for being rivals in the past. Although it wasn't much of a rivalry. Kyrie will have no true rival in 3 years at the PG any ways. He is special, and then he will leave Cleveland lmfao.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe Wall was also a part of the problem with the character issues on that Washington team. I'm not saying he is a bad guy, but he doesn't seem to have an incredibly high basketball IQ and he tends to get out of control a lot.
People were saying this time last year that Wall was going to be making a huge jump in his sophomore season. It turned out to be the complete opposite. Could be that the league has adjusted and are beginning to force him into the weak areas of his game.
It should be very interesting to see how Wall responds this season. The guy I saw last year needed a lot of work on some really key areas (ball handling, jumpshot, being a more consistent/smarter player).
The thing that Kyrie has going for him is the versatility of his game. If teams are really aggressively over-playing his drives and collapsing on him in the lane, he can pull-up very successfully. If a team is over-playing his jumper, he will go right past them with that explosive first step. Hell, now that they have Waiters, if teams are really making him work, he can allow Dion to take over some of the ball-handling responsibilities and he instantly becomes a deadly spot-up guy.
When it comes to scoring, he is as well-rounded as a second year player can be.

Hilarious. You still a Cavs fan or are you "repping" the Heat now, as per your avatar?

This is why you're the worst. Oh Irving finally got up to 40% did he?
John Wall 19.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 9.0 APG, 2.4 SPG, 0.3 BPG on .419/.333/.831.
Kyrie Irving 20.6 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 5.9 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.2 BPG on .401/.305/.795.
