Great post OP, there are other gym rats out there. Durant, CP3, D. Rose (dunno why an injury made everybody forget how much he's addicted to basketball).

People are people, every generation there are always going to be players that try their hardest and practice all the time to perfect their craft (Bird --> MJ --> Kobe --> Rose), to people who dont give a shit about basketball and let their talents go to waste (80s drug users --> D. Plus just because someone has a huge life outside of basketball doesn't mean they practice hard as well. But did you look at him this year? It required a shit ton of work to improve your post game and defense like that. I've always disliked Kobe but even I can say he's pretty much unmatched in his desire to win. He and MJ are in a category by themselves in that area.
