View Full Version : the cost to train with Hakeem in the offseason
$50,000 a week.
Alan Hahn:
Stoudemire will spend two weeks with Hakeem Olajuwon in Houston next month. The cost of learning The Dream Shake? $50,000 a week is what we were told. Now, we don't know of Olajuwon is charging Stoudemire full price, but Amar'e plans to get bang for his buck. He said he plans to memorize every lesson so he can expand his game to include one or two go-to moves on the post. Stoudemire has been known as mostly a pick-and-roll player who developed a mid-range jumper in 2010-11. Mike Woodson wanted him to be more of a threat in the post, so he asked his former Rockets teammate to spend some time with Stoudemire. Tyson Chandler is also expected to spend some time with Olajuwon after the Olympics.
Real talk - of all the people we hear go to train with Hakeem, do any of them improve?

What's your basis for saying Kobe hasn't improved?
Lebron definitely improved and Dwight as well after spending time with Olajuwon.

Dwight and LeBron both improved their post moves/footwork significantly after training with Hakeem. Naturally, most of it is due to the hours they spent in the gym perfecting the moves he showed them and applying his advice, not the actual hours spent with him.
LeBron even did the dream shake once during these Finals. Bit of an awkward version, but it worked. It was a nice moment.
I don't think Lebron has better technique. He just refused prior to this year to go into the post.
Cheap, 100k that's what I would charge.

Kobe improved, but it's more thanks to his work ethic. Lebron still has a long way to go. Howard is still raw.

Charging $50,000 is cheesy and why can't some coach teach these guys this shit, it is not like they can't just watch a video and teach the footwork.
Bit of a scam to be honest, but then again, he is Nigerian, maybe some prince needs a temporary loan or something?

Nigerian princes:bowdown:
I dont see an issue with him charging even if he did workout with Dwight for free. Who wants to mold your schedule and free time around another person trying to improve their game? Hakeem could be doing so much in that month only he has to spend time with Amare teaching him post moves.

Not sure why some people think it's a bad idea that Hakeem is getting paid. Some people expect him to teach for free. If someone is paying you to teach, it's wise to take the money. Someone suggested that a coach could teach the sames moves, but it's not the same. Hakeem could give an insight of a player who used those moves even against hall of fame legends versus a coach who just watches the moves on tape. Hakeem will explain to his students on what to watch out for from the defense so they can perform the right moves during the right situation or when it's time go to plan B. 50K is not a lot of money for NBA superstars so I'm not sure why some people think it's a ripoff. Marcin Gortat went to with Hakeem in an offseason and now has an improved post game.

No issue with Hakeem charging at all, he's spending his time to try and help you. Especially since it's getting popular to go to him, no reason he shouldn't charge. Would you do free work?

Some people need to have a spell.
First, Olajuwon is one of the greatest post players ever. Of course players improve, even if its 10 mins with him. Get real.
Second, he may be broke. He may give the $50K to charity. He may blow it at the poker table. Who cares.

Mastering the moves takes years. Implementing the moves at a high success rate can be done in months when you have NBA level skill base.
He should charge even more. $50k is pocket change to these superstars.
As for if it's effective - look at Bynum - does any one think he'd be as good as he is if KAJ hadn't trained him. I think KAJ had a lot to teach him especially in the intangibles area - how to win, the kind of attitude to have, etc - as to whether Bynum heeded the advice

anybody can just imitate hakeem's moves. hell i can do half assed dream shake at Y.
but to do that in a real NBA game and make them your signature move is virtually impossible. if it was so easy then we would've seen dream shakes in every game.
only few gifted post players can make it a habit of it. Yao was that guy.

He isn't charging $50,000 to teach the dream shake, it's more to teach fundamentals of a post game, footwork, feeling out the defender, using balance and misdirection, etc....

$50k is dirty cheap if you ask me. Those superstars earn hundreds of millions, and by learning post moves from the Master they can improve their game further AND earn extra millions. Win-win.

For the amount of detail Hakeem goes into with these guys $50k isn't excessive.
The stuff we get to see is the on-court work/moves. The sessions also include film study, fitness, etc. When you consider how much it cost to train with Tim Grover and that you literally do not learn any one specific part of the game, Hakeem is not a bad deal.

Kobe, Dwight and Lebron all improved after their summers with Hakeem, but out of the 3, Kobe is the only one who looks natural down there, and moves with some level of grace. Lebron and especially Dwight may have some of the technical side down, but their movements are robotic.

Hakeem didn't develop his post-game in an off-season, he worked on it all his life, expecting him to make lite versions of himself out of 25+ year old athletes in two weeks is idiotic.
KLovin

In Kobe's case, it was more just tapping into his already present basketball skill to enhance his post game. The footwork and IQ was already there. Hakeem himself stated that Kobe was instinctively skipping the more basic steps that he was trying to teach him. Breaking it down step by step with Hakeem helped Kobe polish up some of his moves and really get his post game going.
For Dwight I think he just needed a confidence boost to use some more post moves. He'd been working with Ewing for a long, long time but never really seemed to develop any moves outside of his running hook. The season after he trained with Hakeem we started seeing more shimmies and spinning jump hooks from Dwight.
Lebron just refused to get in the post until he worked a little with Hakeem, lol.
Anyway, as a Knick fan, I'm hoping that Amar'e does indeed learn some go-to moves in the post. He has all the physical tools necessary to be a good post player. Now if only he could grab a rebound in traffic every once in a while...
