Who do you think will breakout this year?
My pick in on Asik if he gets at least 25 mpg.

Sad thing is it will be the guy Houston elected to ignore- Dragic. The kid was awesome as a starter and with the system in place in PHX he will have all star caliber numbers.

Avery Bradley or O.J. Mayo.
I see Mayo averaging 24 PPG on 45%.
I also see Bradley making the All-Defensive First team and averaging 15 PPG and 40% from behind the arc.

Why the hell are people projecting that Asik will average a double double? He'll probably get garbage buckets here and there, but definitely not 10-12 points per game of garbage buckets. I can see him averaging double figure rebounding and 1.5-2 blocks per game, but double digit scoring, definitely not going to happen.

Based on the current Rockets roster, I see Asik putting up
8/12/2ast/2blk/1.5stl
54%fg / 50%ft
He's not going to win MIP simply because what he does well on defense doesn't show in the stat sheets.

It'll be a Suns player, most likely.
Lin's not good at setting people up to score, so i'd doubt it. Everything is free flowing, he doesn't feed the hot hand.

Bingo. I'm all in for Michael Beasley. I don't know if he will be the most improved, but he'll be a real go-to scorer for the Suns, and he'll get 24ppg or so. The voters love big jumps in offensive production.

As far as I know there is none. But I remember Camby when he won the DPOY in the 06-07 season, he played good defense and good stats on the defensive end but overall their team suck at defense. Their team probably below 10 in the team ranking.

he's an elite rebounder and defender and has better hands than kwame. if kwame and deandre jordan were starters last season, why can't asik be one? he's still super raw offensively but he should be able to come close to 8/12.
that really isn't enough to be MIP but his defensive impact will certainly be felt. houston will just have to rely on their other positions for scoring
G-train

It's hard to pick his production.
Many backups look great playing 20 mpg, as basically they can expend all their energy in bursts.
Doesn't always turn into much more production when that becomes 30 mpg.
I'll predict 7 points 8 boards and 1.2 blocks in 28mpg.
blacknapalm
07-25-2012, 02:28 AM
^ too low on boards. the nine games he played 20+ minutes last season, he averaged 9.1 rebounds and that was only about 23.5 mpg. when he got 30+ minutes, he averaged 10.5 rebounds (albeit small sample size).
scoring will vary but i think rebounding will be there and he'll hit double digits. he's a monster on the defensive glass.
also, why so low on the mpg? do you predict foul trouble or lack of offense being that awful? houston paid this guy too much to not at least give him 30 mpg.
Trentknicks

I think people are getting a little excited that the Rockets went after him so hard. Just because he is getting paid like a VERY improved player, doesn't necessarily mean he will be one.

Yeah, just my opinion, but I am factoring in rebounding against the oppositions best front courts and playing with his own best 4 man, and for only 28mpg, and against fresh players over an entire season.
I think he will have stretches of 10+ a game. But I'm calling an average of 8 or 9.

I don't think he is good enough to play that style and be effective for much longer than that per game. Similar to Tyson Chandler at Dallas.

Asik would foul out before playing 25 minutes nine times out of ten. By far one of the most frustrating players to watch, especially offensively...ugh. More than glad the Bulls are letting his ass walk. McHale doesn't have a shot to change his game. Asik just doesn't have it, and he plays scared. The best I've seen from Asik only comes if there's a big lead.
The only thing that may be something to write home about will be his rebounds, considering the shit "big men" that the Rockets have on their roster.

you're overstating his foul trouble. that was a problem early in his career but he didn't even foul out once last season. he also played a couple games 30+ minutes and came away with only two fouls in each. that's a very good sign going forward. foul out nine times out of ten? c'mon. only bigs that are totally out of shape and severely lack foot speed commit fouls at that rate. asik is neither of those things.
houston signed him for his rebounding, energy, toughness and defense. his pick & roll defense and closeout defense are both near elite levels for big men.
he's a horrid FT shooter so his effectiveness in games late remains to be seen. he doesn't have much of an offensive game outside a dribble gather/dunk. still, not as bad a deal as people make it out to be. his impact on defense is legit.

you're underselling the rebounds part a bit. He has one of the league's best 20.1 rebound rate . Pretty sure he was over 10 rebs when he got extended minutes as well with the Bulls. Being that the Rockets have an abundance of stretch 4s I believe he can have that rebound number over 10 rather than under.
the points is a bit too farfetched at least for year 1. But hopefully, he picks Hakeem's/Malone's/McHale's brains a bit to get some semblance to his offense in the NBA.

OP, are you serious? Asik doesn't have much basketball talent. He's big, takes up space, and can do a little rebounding, but that's about it.
My picks for MIP in 12-13:
Evan Turner
Jerryd Bayless
Avery Bradley
Klay Thompson

so, basically, only scoring takes basketball talent? Being one of the premier defenders, anticipating other players moves and challenging them, that doesnt take any basketball talent? Anyone whos that tall can do it? SMFH as these highlightreel muther****ers. Unless its flashy, its not basketball talent.
Now, no way will he be MIP, but those thinking he wont be incredibly useful in houston are full of it.
$8M a year for a young big with potential isn't a bad deal. Remember, it's $8M a year, not $15M in year three.
Boozehound, did you ever find out if Houston trades the player what their cap number is on the new team?

nah, never quite got a handle on it. they were at 30.25 with lee's QO. waived leuer and jordan (maybe 1.5 total?), SnT'd lee for 3 more players (no idea if they are guaranteed or what). so, if we just take them at 28.75 (known number minus the two waived players) and add the 16 mil for asik and lee, they are probably around 45 million. So, close to max contact under the cap still. they are definitely still in the running to trade martin and pieces for howard and turkey (or whatever, though I honestly dont think any of the other contracts on that team are actually all that terrible)

I don't think it's ever correct to describe 27 year olds as "super raw". To me raw implies that with proper training and experience much improvement can be made.
Asik isn't raw, he simply isn't skilled offensively.
Why the hell are people projecting that Asik will average a double double? He'll probably get garbage buckets here and there, but definitely not 10-12 points per game of garbage buckets. I agree. About 7-8 ppg, 10 rpg, 2 bpg. I hope they start Jones beside him, with White and Motiejunas the first bigs off the bench.

He's getting overrated now. Look, the kid has potential, but there is a LOT he has to learn, and I can't see him getting there in one off-season. I can see him struggling to score under the basket and get in foul trouble all the time, but his defense will be great.

Lance Stephenson won't and shouldn't win, but I hope he gets a handful of votes, assuming they vote 1st, 2nd, 3rd and all that. At least doubled his production across the board in the major categories and isn't just a rotation player now but a starter. Dude's good.

How has he learned to shoot 3's all of a sudden? Shot 'em terribly in college and (albeit in garbage time) last year. He must have put in work.

He lives in Indy full time now (which is GREAT, stay the hell outta NYC). He's spent a ton of time with Billy Keller, Indy's shooting coach. His shooting motion is night and day from last year, SO much more fluid and controlled, none of that weird herky jerky stuff. He's still got a little too much, I don't know what to call it, he leaves his follow through a little short in the wrist sometimes, but it's incredibly better.

He has had 7 double doubles of out of 9 games. In the games he didnt have a double double he avraged 16.5 boards. In one game he had 19 boards and in the other 14.Thats 33 bords in 2 games. He is also 75% at the free throw line after averaging 45.5 last season.
