Who was the better player?
Listening to the swap KG for Kemp thread, and hearing people actually claim Kemp was a better player than Kg, made me question whether Kemp was even a better player than C-Webb.

I give Webber the edge. Both had their faults. Webber was immature and an underachiever for his early career. Kemp had motivational issues after he left Seattle. He went to Cleveland and put career high scoring numbers but they were kind of empty and he wasn't as domiannt as he was in Seattle. Plus he gained a ton of weight, especially after the 99 lockout. Kemp was the more dominant player, but I think CWebb brought more to the table in his prime.

First... :oldlol:
Kemp was damn good, but people really need to not let nostalgia cloud their judgement so much.
Then again, I can top that, I heard someone here Antonio McDyess before his injuries was better than KG.
Anyway, Webber is the answer, better, more well rounded scorer, a much better passer and much smarter. Kemp was explosive, and has the advantage as a defender and rebounder, but Webber led the league in rebounds himself, albeit in a lockout shortened year.
Just watching Webber pass the ball makes me lean towards him, but his overall scoring skill set was superior, and he was pretty explosive himself, not quite the athlete Kemp was in his younger days, but pretty damn athletic. I just wish Webber didn't settle for as many jump shots.
Webber was also one of the best ball-handling big men. kemp thought he could handle the ball like Webber....hence the turnovers. Kemp was also more foul prone.
I've never seen Kemp reach the level Webber was at in his prime, especially 2000. Check out this quote from Phil Jackson about Webber in 2000 and picture the same thing being said about Kemp.
Chris Webber is an exceptional power forward, who on the basis of his season-long consistency, I'd rank as being one of the top three players in the league.
I don't entirely agree with the quote, but it's not crazy. I assume the other 2 top three players are Shaq and Duncan. After that Webber is pretty close to that next level with KG just entering his prime, Malone in his late prime, maybe just out of it and Mourning and Grant Hill at their peaks/in their primes.
I know Webber was borderline top 5 for a good 3 years. Kemp was borderline top 10 for a few years.
One advantage with Kemp is that Webber was much more of a playoff choker. Then again, Kemp was the best player on a '94 Sonics team that won more games than anyone else(63), had more depth and talent than anyone else, and lost in the 1st round to an 8th seed, the first number 1 seed to do so. Kemp also shot just 37% in the series, granted, Mutombo was controlling the paint, but the following year, with the same roster, except 3 players selected to the all-nba teams from the Sonics(Kemp and Payton were both 2nd team), they lost in the 1st round again, this time to a Laker team in the post-Kareem/Magic/Worthy, pre-Shaq/Kobe era. They were young and talented, but this is inexcusable, two years in a row.
Both were on two of probably the 4 or 5 most stacked teams in the last 20 years.

the first thread wasn't about who was better player it was about placing kg in kemp's place in the sonics/bulls finals era.
kg just would get pushed around by other fours in that era....

in terms of comparing kemp and webber
webber was better all around player...and was about 85% the athlete that kemp was
webber was a newer and better polished version of derrick coleman...score run dribble pass strong quick high iq power forward

Webber was the more talented player, but he lacked Kemp's killer instinct.

Webber was a better player with much better all-around skills. Kemp was more of a banger and power player than Webber ever was.
Initially, I was going to pick Webber, but looking back on Kemp playoff performance and Webber choking/disappearance at the clutch moments.
I'm leaning toward Kemp. I would rather pick a player that can carry the team on his back and finishes the game.

I'm kind of under the impression that Kg/Barley, having such unique games would be hard to guard in any era.

barkley had the inside outside punch
strong enough to bang inside and agile enough to shoot outside
kg was just too light in the ass to play inside during that time....he'd be juwann oldham

Both guys were products of environment. Depending on the team/coach/expectations, either player could have finished their career with a great many more accolades and personal achievements... maybe even some championship hardware along the way. However, I give Webber the edge for his hands. Both guys could be accused of lacking the ability to consistently take over games and lead their team.

Webber.
I think the nostalgia with Kemp was because of the dunking. His game was fun to watch, but Webber was a much much better all around player. Much better passer, much more versatile offensive game.
To blame Webber for getting pushed around by Shaq is hilarious. Earlly 2000s Shaq bullied EVERYONE.
But yeah, Kemp was good, but not on Webber's level... and most definitely never near KG's level.

dirk had better career than c-webb, but he aint better baller than cwebb. yes, dirk has the lethal go to move, and cwebb didn't. but that's only thing he has on cwebb. no doubt i rank dirk above cwebb all time, but if i had to build a franchise, i build around cwebb.
and no doubt cwebb was top 10 most talented player of all time. so you can say cwebb severely underachieved. imagine cwebb staying healthy and had his kobe or wade. no doubt cwebb would've had a ring or two. and yes, a prime cwebb would've been the lead dog even if he had played with any other superstar wing. things he has done on the court was sick. dude made everybody around better. don't expect him to be a killer scorer in 4th, but you can expect him to make the offense move through in 4th. he will use his gifted passing ability to help others create.

Nostalgia nothing. Kemp was clutch, Webber was not.
webber was more well-rounded, but nastiness was all kemp.
and kemp didn't shy away from taking over in crunch time. webber kinda weakened a bit at that moment.

I think he meant in the Finals against the Bulls
In that case yes he would be correct.
Kemp arguably had the best playoff run of 96 including Jordan
Many critics felt that way.

Had the refs played fair, and not rig game 6 of 2002 wcf, webber would have a ring, and he would be considered a top 8 pf.
Sadly, the refs and david stern ****ed him over, sucked the laker's dick, and now chris webber is considered a bad player
WEBBER HAS A RING, from 2002!@#!@#@#!
It is his, he was rigged by the refs!!

Kemp was a better defender, but he wasn't a smart one. Part of being a good defensive player is staying out of foul trouble and Shawn Kemp was constantly at the top of the list in personal fouls year to year. That is why he never averaged more then 35mpg during his entire career...he was ALWAYS in foul trouble.

I don't think I've ever agreed with anything on here as much as this lol. I don't know if I completely agree with Webber being a playoff choker, but he definitely didn't have the right mindset for a first option to me, and I don't know if Webber was a better scorer. They were different. Webber was a real first option caliber scorer because he could put up 25 any night, but he also settled way to much and it really hurt his efficiency. He wasn't awful but to me he should've been what Kemp was which was one of the most efficient scorers in the league. So Kemp definitely has an advantage in some sense, though I do think Webber was better overall.
One thing you didn't really seem to adress in depth was that Kemp was a really good defender, where Webber was average in his prime and pretty awful otherwise. Those Seattle teams really relied on being able to pressure the passing lanes and ball handler instead of really relying on sound rotations and fundamental one on one defense and Kemp was part of that. He probably gambled a bit much (though that was just the teams style) but he was probably the main reason to me that they were able to play the style that they did. He was versatile defensively and just caused some havoc because of his athletic ability. I wouldn't call him smart defensively, but he had his big plays on defense almost every game.
