the dude who played the NFC Championship with a fully broken leg should've been #1 imo

i cant even imagine how painful that must have been

Frank: A good cop - needlessly cut down by some cowardly hoodlums.
Ed: That's no way for a man to die.
Frank: No... you're right, Ed. A parachute not opening... that's a way to die. Getting caught in the gears of a combine... having your nuts bit off by a Laplander, that's the way I wanna go!

Jack Johnson should be a distant No. 1 on every list. That guy was a trailblazer. F#cking mocking and knocking out white guys in the 1900s, while pimping out white women and racing cars in his off time. That was an age when, in the US, black people were lynched for looking at white women the wrong way.

He was also very intelligent and spoke several languages.

I mean... who compares?

I haven't really taken the time to study his career, but excellent post. Some of these "trailblazers" had to be tough SOBs to get as far as they did in life.

Maybe I am in the minority, but if I were going to have to face an alley full of thugs, I might have to go with Ronnie Lott at my side (and he would have to do everything, BTW, while I curl up in a ball.)

If you get the chance and have a little bit of extra time, watch this video...

Will do. I'm sure many posters here will agree with me, but it is truly amazes me, that as I get older, I find I actually know less. There is so much history that I know so little about.

What I was going to mention. The guy CHOSE to amputate part of his finger because a surgery would require him to miss games. I mean WTF

Jack Tatum's reputation deserves a mention too.

jlauber - I'm going to be fairly busy fulfilling lookup requests for the APBR and nbastats.prv.pl for the next few days, so I don't have time to work on the All-Defensive Teams/Finals MVPs projects at the moment. If you wouldn't mind, could you PM anyone who was around then who might be interested (or PM me a list of who we should ask, if you think we should wait until I have time to commit later in the week)? Also, do you have any format/logistic suggestions for how we should do this?

Indeed. I think that true wisdom begins when you accept the fact that you know very little.

Most adults realize this... And the sooner the better.

There's difference between badass and being loud.

Neon is the man, for sure, but he was loud, not badass.

I am not sure who else might be interested, but I promise to get back to you on that defensive list. As for format, I will go with whatever you decide. It's your baby, and I will merely contribute.

Bill Walton tells the story of a meeting with Wooden at some point in his college career...

"Bill, it is what you learn AFTER you know it all, that counts."

I'd say Ronny Lott should be an honorable mention. Sure, not the most badass athlete of all time, but he amputated his finger just so he could play football. That's badass

Jack Johnson easily number 1.

The Original Sugar Ray, Mike Tyson, Deion Sanders and Jim Brown round out the top 5ive.

Off topic, but I am sure that someone who has studied the game as much as yourself, would be more than welcome (although that is not my decision to make.) And I wonder how many other's here, who consider themselves well versed in NBA history (regardless of age), would be interested?

sounds good, I'll PM the standard guys, then (julizaver, psileas, phila, cavsftw, g.o.a.t., etc.), later this week

absolutely!

any suggestions for formatting and logistics are welcome...these things tend to fall apart mid-way through typically, so we need to keep people interested
