best women's soccer/football game I've seen. Was a pretty epic game...Canadian captain w/ the hat trick, Rapinoe w/ an awesome overall performance, and Alex Morgan w/ the gamewinner.
Gold Medal game against Japan...will it be repeat or redemption?
Also...in b4 "nobody watches womens soccer"...lol

I just caught the overtime but god damn what a way to end it. Somehow you could just see it coming. Now the US can't mess up again they got to get this one against the Japanese. That defender had to be so gassed couldn't even get off the ground. USA fitness at it's finest

That was a classic game for sure.
Hopefully, the US doesn't falter against Japan this time. They need to just flat out deny Japan any chances. No mercy this time.

my sister's bf was here watching the game with us, huge football fan and he said in literally thousands of matches he's watched, he's never seen a call like that before. complete bs, we've got cause for complaint.
though the winning header with 30 seconds of extra time to go was pretty damn nice. and it was really only a matter of time, seemed like half the canadian squad was limping around by the second period of extra time and us dominated possession.

Started watching the game when it was 1-1. There was 3 goals in the span of like 20 minutes, was nuts. And yea that penalty was bull.
Such a sad way to lose, such a long game and then to lose in the added time of the second half of extra time... just sucks.

I've been watching soccer for a while now and never have I ever seen that 6 second call. Usually if the GK is time wasting they will get a warning or a card. A free kick immediately out of nowhere? unbelievable. I've read enough about it and I'm too angry to talk about it anymore. It is what it is. The referee is a waster and should rot in hell.

So it's clear, it IS a rule (the 6 second rule) but one that is never usually called. I'd be willing to wager a 6 second hasn't been called in a professional or international match in 10 years. Further, my understanding in the case of a 6 second issue is that goalies are usually warned first, then given a yellow card, THEN a kick is awarded.
Just a complete sham all the way around.

It's most definitely a real rule. I've seen it enforced, in video games. In FIFA, hold the ball, the game makes you kick it. In real soccer, NEVER.
The ref was power tripping, the Canadians went into this game with a chip on their shoulder about the officiating (the things they were whining about pre game were lame) and it continued into the game, and the ref was being a stupid bitch and power tripping.
Ridiculous call. Ref was not cheating, why would she? But she should be suspended because
1) She made a call never made because she was trying to basically make a point she was in charge.
2) Not that one should ever make bullshit calls to make a point, but certainly not at that time.
3) She was being catty with the Canadian players after the call. There were talks she smirked, and there was back and forth. There should not be back and forth between refs and played.
Terrible terrible terrible.

I was just making a point that it's never enforced in real games. Sorry..jeez...
Remove the video game reference and note there is a real rule that the goalie cannot hold the ball for more than 6 seconds however it is almost never enforced. Watching every Chelsea game, a ton of MLS and Real games last year as well as all the Eurocup i can handle i never saw it enforced.

LONDON—Melissa Tancredi wanted to get on the bus. She couldn’t trust herself to talk.
But after being robbed of a chance for a gold medal — in what was the equivalent of pilfering the chalices from one of the sport’s cathedrals — she couldn’t walk away.
She returned, face twitching, eyes red-rimmed and wet.
“I couldn’t believe what happened,” Tancredi said, jaw working side to side. “That was our game. That was our win. And it was just taken away. So …”
She let that “So” trail off.
Canada will be thinking about that “So” for a long time.
Monday’s Olympic semifinal at Old Trafford was probably the best game of women’s football ever played. Canada lost 4-3 after added extra time. The key player? Norwegian referee Christina Pedersen.
Canada took the lead three separate times through three Christine Sinclair goals of exponentially expanding skill. It was a triptych that ought to be hanging over a Flemish altar.
“We feel like we didn’t lose, we feel like it was taken from us,” Sinclair told The Canadian Press. “It’s a shame in a game like that that was so important, the ref decided the result before it started.”
After last night, the committee that gathers to decide the Lou Marsh Award for Canada’s top athlete next year can start drinking at noon. It won’t be a very long meeting.
Sinclair is already the finest female team athlete this country has ever produced.
She was the very best she has ever been in the biggest game she has ever played. What other athlete can say that?
Whether Sinclair comes away from these Games with a medal or not, last night was the golden cupola crowning her career.
Her third came in the 73rd minute, pushing off two markers and heading the ball back across the face of goal and over a defender standing at the far post. It was a flat classic. Men. Women. Martians. Nobody scores that good a goal.
There was a long, long way to go until victory, which makes what happened next so crushing and also so bizarre.
Around the 78th minute, the ball found its way back to Canadian goalkeeper, Erin McLeod. The American forwards were pressing high up the pitch. McLeod was looking for a chance to outlet the ball to a fullback, rather than to launch it up the field. Eventually, she gave in and hoofed it forward. But Pedersen had blown her whistle.
She called a foul on McLeod for a six-second violation — time wasting in other words, though nobody’s foolish enough to begin eating the clock with nearly a half hour to go.
No warning was given, according to McLeod. That’s the form — warning first. You want another theme? This has been the Army Olympics, the Empty Olympics and the Angry Olympics. Now it’s the Making Things Up As You Go The Hell Along Olympics.
Regardless of the warning, how often is that call made?
“I’ve never seen that before,” U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said afterward. Sundhage has worked in the game since they used mammoth tusks for goalposts.
She’s never seen it because that call is never made. Never.
And in a one-goal game in which a gold medal hangs in the balance, it should be made never to the power of infinity.
On the ensuing free kick inside the Canadian area, the ball cannoned into the protective arm of Marie-Eve Nault. That’s probably a penalty. That’s how Pedersen called it. The problem was that Pedersen and her crew had ignored an even more blatant handball in the area by American Megan Rapinoe 10 minutes before.
After Abby Wambach’s penalty tied it 3-3, it went to added extra time. Alex Morgan headed in the winning goal in the 123rd minute.
But the game was truly lost when Pedersen lost control of her senses and called what is the footballing equivalent of a high-risk takedown after a rolling stop.
After the call, Canadian players rushed Pedersen.
“I said, ‘I hope you can sleep tonight. Put on your American jersey. That’s who you played for today,’” Tancredi said, voice shaking. “I was honest.”
As captain, Sinclair asked Pedersen for an explanation.
“She actually giggled and said nothing,” Sinclair said. “Classy.”
Even coach John Herdman, a man so positively charged he may bleed protons, could not contain himself.
He started out diplomatic: “It is what it is.” Then the emotion began to get hold of him. At one point, he was forced to stop, near tears. By the end, anger was finally surfacing.
“It was taken from them,” Herdman said. “We’ll move on from this. I wonder if (Pedersen) will be able to.”
Afterward, like Tancredi, he couldn’t quite bring himself to leave. His eyes were glassy, his look dazed. He seemed unsteady on his feet. One wonders if disappointment can cause a concussion.
The point he wanted to keep banging on — “To watch them women just keep getting up was phenomenal. It felt like it was America and the referee against us. … And not to come away with something?”
But they did. There may still be a bronze in this for them, but they’ve already given us the Canadian Olympic team’s defining performance in these Games.
A performance like that cannot be forgotten only because it came in a loss.
We celebrate victories, but we also celebrate classics. If all those great Canadian triumphs we like to talk about — from ’72 onward — were celebrations, this team’s 4-3 loss at the Olympics was Lear on grass. It was Macbeth. It was a great tragedy. Emphasis on “great.”
Canada played the world’s No. 1-ranked team, the double defending gold medallists, a side they had not beaten in 11 years.
And they lost, unfair and unsquare. But they were magnificent.
If there is to be any justice after a largely unjust night, the rest of us will remember and celebrate what happened here.

It's an indirect free kick, not penalty.
Here's my unbiased take on this:
You're free to take a black/white approach to what happened. That is a rule that is in place and the ref is within her bounds to call it.
However, sports, just as life, are not black and white in reality. Anyone who watches sports knows this.
So let me lay it out for you. This situation has happened thousands of times at this level of soccer in the men's and women's game. If you go look at the first instance, the second......the 5,000th......10,000th time, etc. and you notice that in pretty much of all those instances an indirect free kick inside the box is never called, rather a verbal warning by the ref and a yellow card the second time, would you not raise an eyebrow?
I feel the best way to get an honest answer from yourself is to put yourself in the player's shoes. Let's pretend you're the Canadian goaltender. You've played all of your life at the highest level. This call has never been made against you. You've watched the highest levels in person and on tv (men's and women's) and it's never been called. You've personally experienced and seen as a bystander that the ref will ALWAYS give a verbal warning first....and even the second time a yellow card, but not take position away.....when the ref awards that indirect free kick would you not say "....wait.....wtf?"
Again, sure, it was the refs prerogative to call it. Isn't it expected that she adheres to a certain level of precedence? And not some flimsy precedence because as I said, this situation has happened thousands of times and has basically never been called this way. That you have to agree doesn't look good for a ref....c'mon you can admit it.
I can even understand if this was the second warning and she gave a yellow and the indirect free kick.....but to not even give a warning at all, which is as close to rule as can be without actually being one.
You see, when refs throughout the game's history call it a certain way it sets a level of expectation for the players. Not exactly a rule, but close enough. To screw over a goaltender because a ref on this day decided "No, to hell with what they expect every ref to do, I'm gonna do what is never done because I can" is sad.
What's worse, the goaltender had instances earlier where she held on to the ball much longer (faking passes to players and such before kicking the ball down the field) and she was never warned. But the ref calls it with 10 min left when she held on to the ball for a shorter period and without that warning.
But hey, black and white...

I thought the officiating kind of saved them late game (regulation), no?
Apparently, the Canadian goalie was warned about stalling/time wasting/whatever it's called, and it was pointed out to a ref while she did it again. Also, one of the dirty Canadian players pushed a USA player to the ground and stomped on her head with no penalty.

eh I think they got robbed. that play more or less decided the game. its like a call at the end of a bball game where the player doesn't get touched but goes to the line for 2 FTs to win it. complaining about a no-call earlier in the game would be kinda irrelevant when judging the enormities of the situations

Ya, but the rough/dirty plays came from both sides, while Canada never received an indirect free kick inside the American's box. lol
I specifically recall late in the game Wambach going studs first into the defenders foot forcing her out of the game for a bit. That could easily break someones foot...no call btw.
I remember the American going hard into the black Canadian player's knee, which could have easily torn every muscle, luckily didn't although she did miss times as well....no call btw.
I think those were both in extra time actually. Americans really wore Canada down. Canadians were either off the pitch due to hard tackling or struggling to continue running on the pitch.
But ya, both teams played rough, both teams did not get THAT call. lol

IMO both teams played as dirty as it can get in the game, so no team should complain about the non calls on dirty plays.
For the two controversial calls i only think that the first call was controversial, and that is only because it never gets called, and not that she did not commit it.
And the PK is as obvious as daylight, and only reason people are so upset about PK is because of the first call
It was actually reported that the ball was handled twice by two separate defenders
