View Full Version : The Upcoming Films Thread

I figured instead of starting a new thread for every single future film, why not just put them all in one thread. Post trailers, news, speculation (careful with spoilers).

More news about P.T. Anderson's 'The Master'. Looks like the followup to his masterpiece 'There Will Be Blood' will focus on the beginnings of a Scientology like religion with Philip Seymour Hoffman playing a character based on L. Ron Hubbard's life with Jaquin Phoenix playing a drifter who becomes his right hand man.

Official Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ1O1vb9AUU)

Teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WTM8eO1Oec)

There was an impromptu screening of the film and it's gotten rave reviews. Talk of best pic win and career-best performances from Phoenix and Hoffman, which is saying a lot. I like how they retained Jonny Greenwood to do the score after the work he did in TWBB. You can tell it will have the same tone (both sound and visually).

"I'm still digesting everything I saw, but it was pretty amazing. It was like a strange fever dream. [But] not audience friendly AT ALL. An ambiguous ending and not one likable character. And without any 'milkshake' lines, it probably won't have the breakthrough that There Will Be Blood had... There are three or four scenes between Phoenix and Hoffman that are barn burners. It also containts the best work Amy Adams has ever done... Phoenix WILL win Best Actor unless Daniel Day Lewis blows us away with [his] Lincoln performance. This is Raging Bull territory for him. Believe it or not, his performance is stranger than that fake doc he made. The only way I can describe him is 'animalistic.' (I think the Master title refers to more of a dog and his master. At least that was the vibe I got).. The style feels like Terrence Malick by way of There Will Be Blood."

I don't know. Seems like something that could either be epic or a muddled mess. Looks like there's a lot going on in that one, hopefully it's not too over the top.

the film is over 2 1/2 hours long, so I don't think the Wachowskis missed anything from the book. However, I think it is going to be heavily criticized for being "too high browed".

I read Life of Pi and loved it. Heard there was gonna be a movie so I got excited. The trailer seems too theatrical for me though. :\ I'd rather have Life of Pi without all the special effects because truthfully, I doubt the story by itself needs all of the extras.

Can't wait.

I love PTA's art and I am absolutely fascinated by Scientology. On top of that, this cast looks amazing (as always for PTA).

Too early to say this is a shoe-in for Best Picture? Only if the Coen Brothers have something planned. They are the only American filmmakers who can match PTA when he is on his game.

1. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD.

the hype has been crazy, first time feature director benh zeitlin(glory at sea) looks like he has made something truly special. to me this looks like where the wild things are(done right) meets days of heaven. mixing malick with magic realism has me more exited about this film then any other.

michael haneke's new film, nuff said right there. stormed over everything at cannes and was said to be the clear and away best film in competition. alot of people have said this is haneke's best film, which means my expectations are for one of the alltime great films in the history of cinema.

3. THE BURIAL/TO THE WONDER
http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac304/popcandyarcade/The-Burial-2012.jpg
shockingly, terrence malicks new film is opening in venice next month! i wont believe it untill it happens because malick, as most people know, takes years and years in post production and tree of life was only last year. also, according to most places he has another film "about the birth and death of the universe" coming next year. hhmmmm, you wait twenty years for a malick film and then three come along at once.

jacksons need to push technology(ala cameron) has me greatly afraid for this- 48fps is gonna blow, and its in ugly 3d(so it almost fails to make my list based on this fact alone) but there is no questioning the effort and detail of the production design in the lotr's films, going by sets alone, it looks like hes going all out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOGsB9dORBg

LES MISERABLES
more oscar bait but les mis is an epic moving experience on stage and hooper should atleast be able to give it the scale and look it requires. i dont like his grand style in terms of cinematography, just hope he can manage some restraint.

With the pre info being relased on The Master, I was reading someone the other day talking about how all PTAs work seems to hover around California, and has a sort era or specific setting, the 70s porn scene, the oil rush, the self help guru new age era, and now this very specific rise of a religion, and then they started talking about looking for a common theme among all the work together, because it seems he may be taking a long look at the state of California as a whole.

I'm not sure I believe it, but it stuck with me, and I'd like to give it a little more thought and research.

Honestly, I think it was a radio interview, or maybe a podcast, because I recall that when it was brought up it was sort of off the cuff, and someone chiming in that TWBB is not in California, but then they looked it up and it was in fact.

So it's something that wasn't a fully formed thought, just an idea that once it was mentioned got stuck in my head and now I want to do a little digging.

If I find any info or anyone else with similar thoughts I'll let you know.

I've never read The Life of Pi. What's it about? Is it worth reading? It strikes me that it may found in the same bookstore section as The Alchemist, which I loved ... is that a fair guess ... going solely on the couple of pictures posted here.

RidonKs

the novel is worth checking out thorpe. in the right hands it's also ripe for adaptation though, and with lee and the guy who wrote finding neverland, it's a safe bet that the film won't let down so you could also just wait for that.

the alchemist is a good comparison, i reckon if you like one you'll probably like the other. i liked em both anyway. life of pi isn't anywhere near as abstract as alchemist, the personal journey of the main character mostly about exploring christianity, judaism, and islam... the first half anyway. then it kind of spirals into an adventure fantasy story at which point the plot really takes off. lots of great material re truth v perspective, and martel does a terrific job keeping the reader guessing.

Wrong for so many reasons. The Batman movies are great but not on the level of some other movies Nolan put out (Memento, The Prestige)

I don't think anyone brought up Django Unchained yet? I know theres been threads made on it but still...
