i've always been more into NBA live. glad to see theyre coming back. IMO 2k has always made me feel like i was running on ice. the moves have too long of a cut scene. like if i wanna do a simple cross over the guy will go into a spin dribble through the legs back step motion.. its nothing close to total control
the shot stick was the worst invention ever. its what got nba live into trouble. they tried to copy it with nba elite 11 and look what happend
overall if you're into ankle breaking isolation ball, self lobbed ally oops with player lock, total control dribbles, more hang time on your shot and more realistic players ( not all muscle built bulky dumb looking ) go with live..
the online for 2k is bad. ive always had trouble getting a smooth connection with 2k. but with live its always smooth.
i just hope they can reclaim their top spot. all they need is a big time player on their cover like kobe. jordan or lebron to make it happen
most people will just buy a game based on the cover athlete. yes ... people really are that stupid

2k will always be too much like a choppy computer game with boring slow half court shooting and layup ball never really in control of yourself or your shot game
live will always be the better arcade style in your face dunking fade away isolation alli oop drop 60 with 1 player online game

Man, I loved Live all the way up until 07. I think that's when it started going downhill. While 2K worked on everything about the game and completely revamped the series, Live tried just adding small features here and there with relatively similar game play as the previous year's iteration. I stopped buying Live after 08. It just got ridiculous at that point.
I still think NBA Live 06 was one of the best basketball games I've ever played, especially for its time.

It'll take much, much more than a popular player on the cover to catapult Live into even contention for the top NBA videogame.
I played Live '98, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005, consistently. In my opinion 2004 was Live's best product, as it introduced the Franchise mode (if I'm not mistaken. It could have been 2005, but I remember logging eternal hours on 2004 and am almost certain it was because I was hooked on the new franchise mode). Also, the flow of the game was much smoother and crisper. Still, Live's games never felt realistic, and by the time 2005 came around, it greatly annoyed me that you could just drop 165 in a 12 minute quarterd games on the highest difficulty.
Broke into 2k6 when it was still far from a household name, and was still only priced at $20. I loved it. It wasn't as flashy as Live and didn't contain dunk contests or the 3pt shooting contest, but I didn't care. 2k6 felt considerably more realistic in terms of easiness behind the game. I'd watch my little brother play Live 2007 and Live 2008 and laugh. By then it was clear to me that Live was trash in comparison once 2k started getting more sponsors, and hence more money to put into gameplay development. NBA 2K9 dropped and it was a wrap. Live was now a joke, and despite giving it a try and a friend's house once, I just couldn't stomach how inferior the game had become.
I don't see Live coming back. 2k has an even more loyal fanbase now than Live ever did. Association mode is just  Live would have to do much more than put a Lebron on the cover on its new game. It would have to create something that made 2k look as small as...well...as small as 2k made Live look. A far superior gaming product for the diehard, and even casual, NBA fan.
I don't see that happening.

Did you have the Playstation version? My Live 2000 was for N64 and all I remember is Rahzel pretty much running the whole show. I know Nintendo has a history of fluffing things up a bit to be kid-friendly, so I'm assuming this was the case with me not having Hip-Hop Hooray?

I'm not sure how many people know this but, 2K had the ESPN license and pimped their games out with full ESPN integration, right down to having Sportscenter commercials as unlockables in ESPN NFL 2K5 (alongside a Suzy Kolber poster to put up in your Crib). Then EA outbid 2K and bought the ESPN license for 15 years in 2005 and more or less just let it sit there, not really using it themselves, but also not letting 2K use it. So lame on EA's part.

Wow i didn't know EA had the ESPN license. LOL. How stupid are they for not using it in their games. Ridiculous.
But 2k has been better for a while now, anyway. Live is good as an arcade type of game to throw on when your friends are there and ur not looking for something serious though and just want to see ridiculous cross overs and dunks.

I guess MJ, Pippen, Malone, Stockton, Shaq, Penny, Grant Hill, David Robinson, Hakeem, Ewing, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Alonzo, and Tim Hardaway were all busy.

Steve Francis is on the cover of live 02.
To me Live 05 was the best. The thing that I do not like about basketball gamers is that they overlook what EA brought to the table. I've been playing live since like 95 and I've played every single 2k. Each had its strengths and weaknesses.
My favorite Live is Live 04, with 05 coming in a close second. My favorite 2k was probably 2K7.
Worst Live was definitely 06, that game was pure trash. I cant find any redeeming quality about a game that lets you shoot a runner from three with Dirk and hit it consistently or do hook shot threes with Yao Ming. :facepalm
Worst 2K was 2K10. You couldn't move in the game. I dont know how this game got such a high rating, you were constantly fighting with the game to get it to do what you wanted.

This is what I always believed. I know a lot of people who say ridiculous things like, "I'm still playing NBA2K4 and I much prefer it over 2K12, it's just that good", so I must say I'm not trying to be that guy. But a few nights ago I hooked up my PlayStation 2 and played NFL 2K5 again and to me, it's still that good.
2K5's clearly not without faults (I think I returned one punt for a touchdown in my entire NFL 2K5 gaming history) but the differing approach to Madden just worked so well. The feel of the game is magnificent and still holds up. Not to mention, the awesome off-the-field stuff never seemed to stop coming: 30 custom celebrations to be assigned to players (including the Crip Walk, dubbed merely "Walking"), 25 Classic Matchups and moments replayable by the user with actual classic teams (of which there were well over 35, all editable for accuracy), and The Crib: a two story penthouse where players could purchase furniture, arcade games, framed retro jerseys, or fountains, using points earned from in-game achievements (motivation for continued play).
On top of everything else, the presentation was insane, with an animated Chris Berman, post-game interviews, an abnormal amount of cut-scenes and player audio, and NFL Live episodes (full with highlights from other games). It makes me wonder how NFL 2K5 was able to pack so much in to their PS2 game while other sports (even NBA 2K5) seemed bare by comparison.

Do you know when the exclusive license ends so 2K can make NFL games again?I don't know all the details but I think the initial exclusive agreement went through 2009, at which point they extended the contract through 2013. I'm assuming that means, at the earliest, things wouldn't open back up until after next year's game.

Awesome, I almost have the same memories. I had NBA Live '96 for two different consoles on opposite ends of the spectrum: Sega Genesis and PC. And you're right, the PC version was so weird (but I thought it was awesome at the time) because it had those 3D arenas with authentic NBA courts (such as Houston's blast-off art), yet the players were still of the Sega ilk, with no real jerseys or cyberfaces and whatnot. I also remember the presentation being pristine, with shiny player bios and whatnot. '97 for PC was the first year cyberfaces and real jerseys were introduced, both mind blowers.
Again though, I was in the same boat. I liked Live 2000 (for the 64) but when I tried Live 2002 for PS2, I was blown away by how lame it was. I recall the backboard and stanchion violently shaking up and down on any dunk, regardless of how powerful. At that point, Live forced our hand and we gave the realistic-looking 2K2 a shot. I've never turned back (despite NBA 2K4 aka ESPN NBA Basketball 2004).
Seriously, I recommend everyone watch this 40 second NBA Live 2002 clip so you can see what I'm talking about with the backboards. Even ten years ago, that type of thing was offsides. And yes, that is Shaquille O'Neal windmilling an alley-oop at the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpPBSRkzv74#t=0m20s

2k12 has shitty teamplay when you don't have friends on, and most of the people I played with get on late at night so I don't see them often. I've kept the same gaming buddies for like 5 years heh.
But when you get into a lobby game on 2k12 it's like fuccccck because it's always like 3 on 2 and then you play for 2 minutes and everyone quits.

2k12 is terrible in many ways.
Anyone who deviates from this way of thinking has no clue what they're talking about. ****ing MJ is in 2k11, the shot stick was perfect. All player handles felt right and game momentum was in check. Blacktop all-star game in 2k11 is also the goat, ****in 3pt contest and a LEGIT slam dunk contest which was removed from 2k12.
2k12 is riddled with CPU cheesing and late game miracles even when you're playing 1v1 against another player (local or multiplayer). Like if you're trailing 10 pts in the 4th quarter, you can expect to make a few 3s just because you're down. Shit feels like Mario Kart.

Why isn't LeBron on a cover yet? Serious question.
Well, he's being rumored of gracing the cover of NBA Live this year, though those rumors are at this point unsubstantiated. Otherwise, I think there's probably a fair amount of negotiation and pay out that must occur in order for a basketball game to use an individual player on its cover (and to subsequently promote the game). As such, there'd have to be an agreement and for the high class elite players, it's not far-fetched to imagine some of those athletes either not wanting to commit to being on the cover of a game, or not receiving a deal they're interested in.
2k11 is the GOAT basketball game.

Like if you're trailing 10 pts in the 4th quarter, you can expect to make a few 3s just because you're down. Shit feels like Mario Kart.I agree with some things you mention, but not all. For instance, I agree NBA 2K11 eclipses 2K12, but I did not find 2K12 terrible. Though, I suppose you didn't call the entire game terrible, just many ways of it.
For starters, it was in fact awesome Michael Jordan was included in 2K11, but I find the classic teams and players to be much more detailed and deep. Players have more legitimate signature styles (ex: Clyde Drexler dunk package) and the amount of classic teams in general increased significantly.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by Blacktop All-Star game. Just a streetball run with the players of your choice? Further, 2K11's Dunk Contest was an abomination by my standards. They'd had a solid contest in the years previous, but 2K11's was reduced to a one minute, split screen, arcade dunk off, a la Tony Hawk. It was a wreck.
On the flip side, I agree about the overall feel and control of 2K11 in comparison to 2K12. In 2K11, there were significant complaints about being tied into animations (particularly on the drive) and I think as a result, 2K12 attempted to solve that supposed issue by removing a lot of those types of animations and replacing them with a broken movement system (defensive sliding, players beating defenders off the dribble but defenders recovering through light speed). So 2K12 took a huge hit in that regard, in my opinion. I think that more or less is the base for 85% of the problems 2K12 faced (outside of the online issues).
With all that said, I've been able to really enjoy myself with 2K12. It pales in comparison to 2K11, but it's no where near horrible, in my opinion. Perhaps it's a poor man's The Dark Knight Rises versus 2K11's Dark Knight? One was near perfect, the other was good but sometimes fell victim to having impossible standards (while committing some preventable mistakes along the way).

LeBron has to do it in his prime. Kobe's cover came at the perfect time, between his 2-peat. Great cover for that reason. It'll help them sell a lot of games and make people switch from 2k series (2k12 was awful). They should write him a fat check.
When is the next Live coming out?

Haven't played either since the 2008 versions. I will tell you though, Live as far as I've played (up to 08) has sucked balls since 2000. It was the most unrealistic arcade-like basketball game. 2K was actually close to real from about 03-08 (again last time I played). I've had many bad experiences with live, not so much with 2k.
From what I've heard Live has improved a lot these last few years, so I can't really judge them now, but if I was to buy one right now, I'd trust 2k more than live, just because of the experiences I've had.
And BTW NBA Live 06 is the worst basketball game I've every played in my life.

live will always be the better arcade style in your face dunking fade away isolation alli oop drop 60 with 1 player online game
you just described why Live blows ass
if I want NBA Jam style action, I'll just play NBA Jam

I would hope it has improved considering they canceled the last version b/c it was so bad. Hell, they even briefly changed the name of the series people thought so poorly of it.
N64 was cartridge based while PS1 was cd. The reason you didn't get that song was b/c of memory limitations.
this is the main reason ive been playing nba live 10 for the past 3 years
EA sports online is perfect
cant deal with laggy 2k
the reason most people like 2k's is because they play dynesty mode or agains friends only
i live in canada so its almost impossible to find anyone willing to play a sports game other than madden or nhl
be prepared for EA to shut down the Live 10 servers once they release a new basketball game.

When is the next Live coming out?In theory, it was slated for an October 2 release of this year. However, there are many questions as to whether that will actually happen. There's rumors the game will not be ready at that time but again, nothing really substantiated has confirmed or denied that report. There just haven't been a lot of encouraging signs at this point.

That superstar shit was just so:facepalm
Live might not come out at all this year. THey missed the electronic show, they missed their internal dates they promised to show things. Go to EA site, there is basically no info on a game that is supposed to be out in 2 months.

2K11 does alot of stuff better than 2k12 and I agree with whoever said its the GOAT sports game. But I would like to have the post play from 2k12 in 2k11.
Live will likely be poor again this year if they release it. I think we will be waiting until the next generation of consoles for a credible effort from EA.

2K12 is awful though.
And who the **** cares who's on the cover... :biggums:
2K11 was okay until they made you download that stupid ****ing patch that ruined the entire game, and the effects carried over in to 2K12.
I was playing Live until 2K9. I've seen everything. 2K has been doing exactly what EA was--making minor changes and reselling the game for $60. I doubt 2K13 is any different.

If you want to run up and down the court, drop 50 a game mashing the turbo nonstop with Kobe, Live is the game for you. If you want a close representation of what you see on TV, 2K is your game. Get a good set of sliders and you're set.
Should 2K implement something like MLB 2K's MLB Today into 2K13, EA basketball will be dead and buried. Still have not heard much in the way of features for 2K13, but I can say with 99% certainty that 2K will shit on Live this year...if Live is even released.

lol I've got a laundry list, but it essentially turned the CPU into gods while your teammates forgot how to play basketball. This carried over in to 12. The fact that 'Momentum' is incredibly broken did not help either.
If you actually want to know, go look at the threads in the VG forum related to 2K.

Sad to see Live go under. But they dug their own grave with those crappy games in the mid 2000's.
Since we're all sharing our stories here:
I moved from Live to 2k on 2k2. Live 2001 was the first on the PS2 and tbh wasn't a good game. But I gave them a pass because a) It was their first effort on the next gen systems, and b) I didn't know 2k existed. However the abomination called Live 2002 happened. Highlights on that game include:
1. More anime-ish players
2. A ball shadow whenever you block a shot
3. It was easier to get an offensive rebound off a missed freethrow
Live did bounce back in what I think was their best effort in Live 2005. In fact, there are some features there that 2k would do good.
1. Post game was top notch. It was easy to pick up but not can't be abused. 2K's post game is wayy to difficult and its hard to introduce casual players to it.
2. A designated shoot and layup/dunk button. This reared it ugly head in 2k11 when I tried a one dribble pull up w/ Dirk, only to see him botch an awkward layup.
Unfortunatly, 2k5 is one of 2k's best efforts too. And when it was time to make a choice, I stuck with 2k.

You shouldn't have to adjust default ratings to play the game.
And there are modes where you can't change any fundamental settings. Quick Play is whatever, really.
