Bill Russell VS Nate Thurmond

Who was the better defender? What would happen if you placed Thurmond on the Celtics instead of Russell? And Finally, just for shits and giggles...How do you think a team comprised of these 2 would effect a peak Shaq double teaming him? Thurmond best known for his 1 on 1 defense, and Russell help defense (If Im not mistaken. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!!)

Nate Thurmond was probably a better individual defender, whereas Russell was the superior team defender.

Thurmond defended Wilt and KAJ better than any other center ever, but Russell's teams almost always won no matter what.

I think Russel was a better all around defender

for example....there's a famous clip of Russell chasing down and Tyshaun-Princing Jerry West's breakaway layup shot.

can't picture Nate running down and outsprinting a guard like that for the block.


I'm assuming that with that kind of quickness that Russ could stay in front of almost any defender on a switch.....so he has a versatility that Thurmond probably didn't.

Russell played both horizontal and vertical defense, while Thurmond - vertical. Bill was just more valuable and impactful defender. Plus smarter.

If i will play against Kareem in next playoffs , yes :D . Thurmond was Kareem killer .
