dont see how 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze is better than 1 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze. it should either be by medal count or some sort of weighted system. Obvious agenda is obvious.

Not to mention Canada is a pretty damn small country at 30 million

That's kind of like saying that losing the NBA finals 3 times >>> NBA Championship.

I wonder how many NBA players or Olympic athletes would agree they'd rather finish 2nd place a bunch of times than finish first.

that is ****ing stupid. so, no pride in being one of the top 3 athletes in your sport eh? what a terrible way to look at the world. The gasol's should just commit murder-suicide now eh?

Say a country has 1 gold in, IDK, pick a dumb and pointless sport, synchronized swimming and another county has no golds but has placed in the top 3 in every sport in the olympics. the first country had the better olympics? Really?

i didnt know the united states set a new record in total metals won at the winter olympics?

so with the summer olympic victory we just took the grandslam of the olypmpics and our beijing victory

2014 we are going for back to back to back to back

germany is the last country to win an olympics and that was the 2006 winter games.

and the united states has won every summer Olympiad since 1996... technically we won in 92' but 12 former soviet countries formed a unified team and beat us by four metals.

They place alot of emphasis on sports. It's just our sports culture is alot different up here. The Winter Olympics is a prime example. Canada dominated the gold medals despite having a smaller population. We focus more of our resources developing the winter sports. Our hockey programs are second to none and go through the same development as Americans do with football.

sorry... when i think of the word medal, i instantly think of metal.

you know, the stuff the medal is made out out of? so i wouldnt consider it that big of a mistake.

its just that when people loose and argument or get pissed off and have nothing else to say they critique their grammar and say

"har har, your dumb as shit."

when in reality, this is an nba forum and i never proofread my post, so a common mistake like accidentaly thinking metals, instead of medals is overlooked.

You're so insecure that you have to pretend that Canada dominated the Winter Olympics. Also, you keep bringing up population due to insecurity issues. Grenada has a population of only a little bit over 100,000 people and yet they had as many gold medals as Canada, but they didn't get theirs in a worthless event like jumping on a trampoline.

Grenada > Canada

America cares about hockey. Certain markets alot more than others but at the end of the day they still enjoy hockey. Just because it falls behind NFL|NBA|MLB doesn't mean it's irrelevant.

It's expensive to play. Can't just pick it up like a basketball\football. In alot of areas in the US you can't just go outside and play it. Need to rent an rink, and that's after learning how to skate, buying equipment etc.

Back on point, why do Americans care so much about Canada anyways. There is always this talking point of Canada being irrelevant or caring more about the US than vice versa, but it seems that some Americans always feel the need to start these threads.

It is a bit confusing.

Just a few fun facts that might add light to the situation.

1-Canada has 5 months of winter, no possibility for outdoor training. This hurts the summer Olympians. If you check the US a high percentage of athletes in the summer games come from California.

2-Canada is 1/10th the size of the US.

3-Canada has a long tradition of not funding athletes, so those in fringe sports basically live below the poverty line (not an attractive lifestyle).

4-Canada did finish 13th overall in the total medal haul, not bad considering we aren't the 13th biggest country in the games. And people who win Silver and Bronze are not losers, it is still considered a victory.

so then canada's huge athletes shouldnt stay in f*ckin canada to train all damn year dipshit. go to california and train. what a cop out excuse

2-Canada is 1/10th the size of the US.
first off this isn't true.... it has 1/10 the population. not a valid argument since U.S. outperformed china, russia, and india. india is shit at the olympics with a population in the billions.

3-Canada has a long tradition of not funding athletes, so those in fringe sports basically live below the poverty line (not an attractive lifestyle).

so then all your best athletes should be in the main sports... how many medals did you get in the bigger events like basketball, track, swimming, soccer?

4-Canada did finish 13th overall in the total medal haul, not bad considering we aren't the 13th biggest country in the games. And people who win Silver and Bronze are not losers, it is still considered a victory.

go ahead and pin up your 13th place award on your fridge at home. many of the countries that are smaller than canada outperformed you, sl so that argument is still invalid.

Then he got a gold on the individual 10M platform, over the Chinese who've been destroying all comers in diving, and I hooted and hollered like a drunken idiot, "worst to first ****heads!." Because I was a drunken idiot at the time, but still.

Being the 2nd/3rd best person in the world is obviously outMFingstanding, but just spoiled or diluted I guess, whatever you wanna call it. I mean no one celebrates the NBA Finals runner ups, it's the same deal.

Not if you are American and have an axe to grind with your neighbor to the north who has 1/10th the population. Bronze and silver don't count, unless it fits the narrative.

Or if you are LBJMVP, but he gets a pass because he is mentally deficient. It would be just plain rude to pick on him anymore, I may even have gone too far, we need to treat his type in a 'special' manner.

When has that happened? Educate me.

No clue why I'm being reasonable with you, just after attention like most of your posts :oldlol:
America doesn't care about hockey. LA Kings won the stanley cup and not a single shit was given by anyone in LA. If the maple leafs won the stanley cup the whole city would burn down. The greatest Canadian athletes play in places like Tampa Bay and LA where no one cares about them. Tragic.

37 total medals to Canada's 26 total medals.

Despite homefield advantage, Canada still only beat USA by 5 golds. And in Hockey, Canada's national past time, we even kicked your ass 5-3 in the qualifying rounds before you lucked out in the gold medal game. Combined score of those 2 games? USA 8

No you couldn't because you are dumb, simple and someone incapable of articulating your ridiculous viewpoints.

I wish we did support our athletes like the US does. It is pretty unfair to expect a Canadian Olympic athlete to work a 9-5 job to support themselves and their family while also training to compete at the games against an American who trains 9-5 every day without worrying about bills and food.

It's no wonder that Missy Franklin, gold medalist swimmer in these games, decided to compete for the US despite being born and raised by her family in Canada. She has dual citizenship as her mother now operates a business in Denver. I don't blame her, the US probably gave her all the money she needed and Canada would have given her nothing.

Didn't realize America = L.A. Like I said certain markets obviously care alot more than others. Minny is crazy about hockey in general, much like Canada. Boston cares about hockey. Detroit is huge on hockey.

Who are these greatest Canadian athletes that play in Tampa and L.A? Your talking out of your ass like usual desperate for attention because you clearly don't get alot of it offline. Great Canadian hockey players are all around the NHL. You could argue L.A's best player isn't even from Canada.

dont see how 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze is better than 1 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze. it should either be by medal count or some sort of weighted system. Obvious agenda is obvious.

Not to mention Canada is a pretty damn small country at 30 million

Because they won less gold medals. Giving points for second or third is ridiculous. It's like giving rings to the Finals losers. (Which means Bryant now has more rings than Jordan. I don't see how 6 golds is any better than 5 gold and 2 silver :confusedshrug:

You guys have 30 million fvcking people and brought in ONE gold. Our individual states have more gold medals than your whole damn country. Oh you guys live in snow and dont properly fund/train your olympic athletes? Hmmm.. that seems like a reason the U.S. might just shit on you. Training harder and smarter in better facilities with better coaches and overall focus probably would lead to better athletes. :hammerhead:

It's just that Mr Know It All is way too defensive and keeps using lameass excuses. "If we multiply Canada's population and medals by 10, then we'd be more impressive." OK, so if we multiply Grenada's population and medals similarly, then Grenada would get 3,000 gold medals?

Not the champions of losing like you suggested? Not that hard to grasp really. I'm not even saying 3rd place is good or something to be proud of. Nobody aims to finish 3rd. Just that finishing 2nd-3rd in events with a ton of people wouldn't be champions of losing. Maybe champions of being medicore? I'd probably say the people who failed to qualify would be the champions of losing.

Common sense really. Wouldn't call OKC the champions of losing, just not the clear best. That'd be reserved for the Bobcats. Do you follow?

Uh.. youre looking into it way too much dude. This isnt something you can prove one way or another so you're never going to be right like you want to be.

I can say.. technically 12 bronze medals means they lost in a bunch of events that they were compeititive in but just couldnt break the barrier. Like how everyone calls TMac a 'loser' despite being a great player because he was good enough to make the playoffs(qualify for an event) but could never take a series(win gold).. although Canada did get one gold.

It all depends on how you define losing so you're never going to 'win' this internet debate. No one is.

I only started in response to those boasting about US superiority, that's how this all started (and it has spanned about 4 threads now, amazingly enough:lol ).

I wasn't using population in ratio to medals as the gold standard of comparing the Olympic performance of competing countries, but I did so to demonstrate that the United States has advantages when compared to Canada. Originally, I only posted in defense of my own country coming under attack because another Canadian poster posted a jab at Americans in the 1st or 2nd post in the original thread.

As someone already stated, Canadian athletes are dumped on by our government and not given near the funding or opportunities of American athletes. This doesn't reflect poorly on Canada however, because we instead use that money to put into social programs and not towards a meaningless dick measuring contest between nations (which is what the Olympics is). Now, do not take this as bitterness, because it is not, I am only stating a fact, that is that Canadian athletes are robbed of the funding they sorely deserve.

This debate has raged on for over a week now, I can't say I am getting tired of it because it is consistently entertaining (although obviously pointless).

I think placing in 3rd place in the Olympics in any event is at least slightly gratifying. At least you know that you're third best among the best athletes in the world in that specific sport. :confusedshrug:

I can imagine, though, training hard for 4 years and placing 3rd not being very appealing, but it is much better than placing any lower.

I'm not trying to win any debate. I don't care about the Olympics one bit. I just don't understand how finishing 3rd place would make somebody the champions of losing. You can define losing any way you want too but once you use the word "champion" your implying their the best at it. 3rd place wouldn't be the best at losing. How could they be the champion of losing when they consistently finish ahead of other teams?

I get it was probably just a quick insult or whatever, it just makes zero sense. No way arguing around that. Saying they lost alot, calling them losers would make sense(like the T-Mac reference) but champions of losers? No go.

3rd place can be called alot of things but one thing that's unarguable is that it's better than 4th\5th\6th etc. Your implying Bronze is the champion of losing, what the f*ck does that make 4th place? World champion of losing?

Canada is a winter driven country, it's economy, tourism etc etc are all winter based. It's of little surprise they don't do well in the summer games. the US doesn't do as well in the winter games because winter sports are not taught in our schools. I grew up in Calif. My High school had a track around the football field, basketball courts inside and out and a couple baseball diamonds a swimming pool and SCUBA diving was a PE Course.

My friend from Alberta, his school had a hockey rink tennis courts, huge indoor gym and speed skating was a PE course.

Comparing the two countries based on medal count is whack, trying to bring down a country on it's sports accomplishments is even more whack.

Now since I've avoided making a moose joke at Canada's expense i'm going to have a beer, a Moosehead because Canada do beer just fine
