View Full Version : Who has the greatest off-hand in NBA History?

I know Larry Bird had a terrific left hand, he had a game where he scored 22 of his 47 points with his left hand.
Guys like Kobe, Nash, Gasol all have very good off-hands (all on the same team now. ) Rasheed Wallace had a filthy left hand as well.
Any others?

Hopefully he follows up with that rumored surgery and removes it
Nash does deserve a mention. He can dribble, finish with his off-hand as well as his right, and not to mention his off-hand pass is arguably one of the best of all time.

Derrick Rose and John Wall are the only ones I know that can go full speed with their left hand in traffic and finish with it like its their good hand. There is no hitch in their game either when they do it.

That wouldn't be his off-hand then.. measuring someone's off-hand ability is like a measure of how ambidextrous you are. If Lebron is naturally left handed then going right would be him going with his off-hand then.
LeBron is ambidextrous (Able to use both hands with equal facility.). So I guess there's actually no 'off-hand' for him.
Wow so he is both naturally a righty and a lefty then?? Seriously it's like someone genetically modified Lebron to play basketball.
If so then Lebron is disqualified.. as far as the semantics of the question I would say MJ because I believed he was born a righty and then practiced so much with his left that he became naturally fluid at both.

Easily Lebron ...
The guy shoots with his off hand. He not making the occasional lay up or floater hes dropping pull up jumpers, fadeaways, deep 3's off the dribble all right and that's his off hand. How can anyone say anybody other than him?
Also I don't think he is ambidextrous. Looks like he just grew up shooting with his off hand. I'm right handed but I play pool, tennis, throw the football all with my left. It's just how I did it growing up but i'm faaar from ambidextrous.

Lebron is a Better Dribbler but NOT a Better "Ballhandler".
Bird was More Crafty With Both Hands at the Half Court: Best Passer Ever at a Half Court Game.
Larry Bird 47 pts vs. Portland (Left handed game):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R76nMD8buR8
Celtics came in winning 14 of their last 15 games, despite McHale being injured for 9 of those games. At this point, the game got a little bit too easy and boring for Bird so he decided to challenge himself by finishing EVERY basket (other than a jumpshot) with his left hand. He ended up scoring 22 points with his left hand, nearly half his total!
Despite all this, Bird still scored 47 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out 11 assists (21-34 FG). For good measure, he hit the game tying shot to send the game to OT, and then made the game winning shot.
The night before in Seattle he had 35/15/11, so this was his second consecutive triple double in just as many nights. Bird truly in his prime here...

Actually if you watch him play closely, one would realize that he would prefer to dribble with his left hand and also finishes amazing with contact on those left handed layups.
Just because he shoots with his right hand doesn't mean he's "right handed on the basketball court."

He also dunks with right hand most of the time. I prefer to dribble and drive with left hand myself as the offhand defense is usually weaker. So does rondo

Well, that could be a reason aswell, but personally, I dribble better with my left hand, but I can shoot with both hands, I prefer my right though. For some reason it doesn't feel the same when I dribble with my right hand, my left hand just does it so easily.
I guess we'll never find out unless LeBron comments on this forum. :confusedshrug:

Mr I'll-shoot-with-my-left-hand-for-shits-and-giggles Bird.
Bird, Lebron, Magic, Maravich come to mind... overall i have to say Bird, he is the greatest shooter in NBA history not just because of his accuracy/productions in that area but because he could put the ball in the hole more efficiently than anybody however you god damn liked it, contested, falling down, hand in his face, of balance, open shot, from any distance, situation, position, footwork, left hand, right hand, two hands, hooks, baby hooks, sky hooks, fadeaway, tear drop, face up, post, of the dribble, 360 spin jumpshot, behind the backboard, up and under, bank shot, uber long finger roll, any limb.. ehh. you name it...... he according to me had the best scoring arsenal in NBA history, his PPG would increase like hell if he was more selfish or simply was chucking many more shots like Jordan or something...
...like roundmound said Bird was also left handed actually...

There's no other answer but Larry Bird here, tbh...
Few others may come close but no one can really rival him in this department (I don't care if he's left-handed in "real life" or not, his off-hand in basketball is obviously the left one).
Left-handed layups, floaters, scoopers, hooks, circus-shots, all types of passes (even full-court), shit even some left-handed jumpers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5k593G5dCU
20 points with the left hand just because he was "bored": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R76nMD8buR8
Seriously, ain't nobody really ****ing with that.
I'd also like to mention two guys that will fly under the rader on this one (or, better yet, usually)...
Paul Westphal, who was terrific from close-range, with both hands, in many ways, and also at finishing at the rim (even dunking); and Bobby Jones, who's one of the best ever at finishing around the rim with the off-hand.

One of the hardest things to do with your off hand is to dribble three times hard with the weak hand in traffic while accelerating. The mind will usually cut it off. Its something you will might never see from even a great dribbler like Chris Paul because the mind will usually short circuit it. You will only see that from Rose and John Wall. Pretty sure they are the two fastest to dribble with their left hand the full court as well (they might be the fastest ever anyway?).
Even if you go to the park and practice going hard to your left or weak hand while accelerating, the mind will demand a change after the second dribble.

Considering that LeBron is actually a left-handed person, he technically shoots every shot with his off-hand. With layups, he's about 50/50, and we all know his boring-but-impressive tomahawk jam is with the right. So I'd go with him since the vast majority of his scoring is done with his off-hand.
P.S. Why the **** would a guy learn to shoot with his off hand in the first place? It's like those fools who learn guitar backward for no damn reason. I'll bet it wouldn't have taken him so long to become a good shooter, and his shooting would probably be more consistent, if he would have just grown up using his dominant hand to shoot.
