Easily the frontrunner going into next season to win it. I firmly believe this will be the season he takes home the award.  His ability to guard all 5 positions

He can win it. Imo he was the runner up last season. If Howard plays the whole season, I don't like Lebron's chances. I still applaud him in his improvement defensively. His effort and willingness to defend is what seperates him from other superstars. :applause:

I don't know that it happens next year, but i wouldn't be surprised if it happens. He's in the race every year now. It's not a huge leap to assume it can happen. The voting clearly indicates that. It's one of those things, like his winning a ring, where the likelihood of it happening was very good.
But with Dwight being on the same team with Kobe, it might be that he decides to elevate his defensive game as he takes a backseat offensively to Kobe and Gasol, making it that much harder to win DPOY for LBJ.

I'm still not convinced he can guard 5's or even good 4's for that matter.
But he will have a great chance of winning it because Dwight will miss a good chunk of the season, and he is elite in guarding the 1 through 3 spots.

Who cares? Does that mean you can't be defensive player of the year? When was the last time you saw Dwight or Chandler successfully shut down a PG?

I thought I heard because of back issues he'd be forced out until the end of November? Maybe that's outdated news.

Agreed. I still think Howard is going to win a few more DPOYs when all is said and done. But I think he will lose votes like Lebron did for MVP in 2011.

,Like tmt said, 1-3 is more of his defensive skills, which.he is overrated for when compared to specialty defenders. Sefalosha can guard 1-3, so can grant hill. Dwight has a bigger defensive impact anyhow...

i think the his "ability" to guard 1-5 is a bit overrated, but i do see a DPOY in his future. The media is back on his side and everyone's been bragging about him being able to "guard 1-5" so it's soon he'll get it. This year i have Dwight winning it though, he'll have something to prove. Kevin Garnett is my sleeper pick for DPOY though. But next year, i can see Lebron winning it.

I think Dwight needs another season to get some of the media back on his side. But if LA comes right out the gate dominating, than he should win it. KG is always a candidate, for sure. Chandler winning it was an absolute joke.

You obviosuly don't watch Ibaka play. His man to man defense is nothing impressive. He is a prolific shot-blocker. His help-defense in the Finals was also atrocious. Bosh >>> Ibaka at overall defense in the Finals

From the eye test alone, I don't think either one of them did well on KD. He shot right over Lebron and he was able to drive past Battier for some dunks.

With the dearth of legit big men, I can see why people think he can gaurd today's centers, put LBJ on a prime DRobinson, Hakeem, Shaq, Ewing etc and you would see he has no chance.

Lebron will never impact a defense as much as a good defensive big Dwight Bogut Chandler KG but he might still win wont deserve it though. No matter how good a perimeter defender they can not turn a bad/average defense into a good one the way a good defensive big man or defensive coach can.

With his size and speed, Lebron is nothing more than a good help defender. This is why he's effective vs small players/guards cuz they can't simply try to blow by him, or shoot over him. That's as far as it goes. He doesn't play the post enough to bolster the claim that he can "shut down" bigs. And that's exactly what he's going to have to do on CONSISTENT basis throughout the season, for him to even be considered for DPOY.

Even playing with his back the way it was Howard was still the easily the best defensive player in the league. Whenever he comes back and if he plays enough games and it's up to his usual defensive standards there is no reason why Dwight should not be given the DPOY once again. Maybe no one wants to see the same guy receive an award over and over, but the fact of the matter is no one comes close to Howard. The media do give this award though and Lebron is a media darling, so no I wouldn't be surprised if Lebron was some how named the DPOY even if there are players like Howard and Garnett out there who deserve it more. Though I do have to say that Lebron at least deserved it more than Tyson Chandler.

He's better on defense theoretically than LeBron, LeBron is bigger but Kobe is smarter.

You are not understanding even one bit.
The point was that you can say someone can guard all five positions, but it doesn't mean he can guard all five positions effectively. That being said Lebron can guard the 4 and 5 spots theoretically because of his size. But whether he would be effective in doing so is a different story. Like I said in my original post from this thread, he excels at guarding 1-3 (which is enough to put him in contention for the award and possibly even win it) but in my opinion he isn't great at guarding good 4's and 5's. That aspect of his game has been hyped up without much physical proof.

Considering he was a better defender against bigs especially gasol brothers than chandler was in olympic games,i would say he is at least good.
MWP is the only non-big since '97 to win DPOY. It's damn near impossible to win it if you're not a PF or C.
Considering he was a better defender against bigs especially gasol brothers than chandler was in olympic games,i would say he is at least good.
Not denying he's anywhere from average to good in that area, just not great. But it would be a different story if he was going toe to toe with bigs from game to game obviously. He had moments in the Celtics series this past season where he couldn't contain KG. He didn't have much success when he did guard Dirk in last year's Finals either. Just a couple of examples from a huge sample size but I'll stick with saying he's elite at guarding 1 through 3 and solid at best at guarding bigs.

He turned the 22nd worst defense into the 5th best defense Chandler was the only good defensive player on the Knicks and they were a top 5 defense. The Heat had a lot more good defenders and a better defensive coach and they were only a bit better than the Knicks.

I predict 20/15/3 on 60% while turning the Lakers into a Top 3 defensive team and also the best rebounding team, maybe even with least points allowed in the paint. Superman is ready for his return.
