View Full Version : What percentage of posters lie about their age?

I am stunned how often I'll go to put someone whose intelligence, grammar, and behavior is that of a 13-14 year old and their profile says they are 28-40 years old...

I know they are lying because anyone that age who is that stupid surely never figured out how to use the internet.

Also if anyone over the age of 22 ever posts a "u mad" image, they should kill themselves.

No one really does that right?

I don't think I've ever posted "u mad?" but I post a ton of stupid stuff and am 38. At issue is that, to me, the internet is one place I can blow off steam and act like a jerk sometimes. All the pent up frustration from work ya dig?

No. I stopped doing that when I was like 18 and the internet was brand new.

Get a membership to a gym and workout or join a rec sports league to blow off steam. Don't antagonize anonymous people for no reason. I don't see how any well-adjusted adult would think that's a worthwhile pursuit.

Also there is a never a good reason to act like a jerk for the sake of acting like a jerk. That's what teenagers do before they grow up.

I don't agree with you. Basically I think you're a conceded asshole that believes your way is the right way even though it's completely subjective. When you get older you'll learn to not worry about what other people do or say and focus on yourself.

I certainly have, although people that have seen me post obviously know that's few and far between. Truthfully speaking I'm 24 years old. I don't see why anybody over 22 would lie about their age because after a while you feel pathetic being in your 20s yet arguing with 15 y/o's on a basketball forum. The only reason people post those gifs is the comedic value of it. I personally literally lol quite a bit when a flame war ensures in a thread in which it eventually degrades into a gif/u mad posting war.

Not in my case. I couldn't care less about a poster's age or anything else, since I can be sure of nothing on the internet anyway. The only thing I care about, which is the only thing I can be 100% sure about, is the content of their posts. Nothing else matters. If the content of their posts show that they're ignorant and don't know what they're talking about, then their age is irrelevant to me. They're ignorant and don't know what they're talking about. It doesn't matter if they're 30 or 300.

Conversely, if the content of their posts shows that they're knowledgeable and know what they're talking about, then, again, their age is irrelevant to me. They're knowledgeable and know what they're talking about. Nothing else is of any concern to me.

Well first off I don't think stuff like that is much of an indication of age anyway, but there are probably people on here who lie about there age because there are always the "you weren't even alive then" arguments. Don't know how many times people have said that to me about the 80's.

Ultimately pointless, as they'll eventually end up exposing themselves by pretending to knowledge they don't have. I myself will definitely expose anyone pretending to knowledge they don't have should I happen to personally come across it.

"You weren't even alive then" is applicable because the person is talking about what they don't know. However, as most historians were not alive during the particular historical period of their expertise, being alive during a time is not a prerequisite for knowing what one is talking about. Therefore either knowing what one is talking about or not is what should be the focus, not one's age or what they were alive for.

Kinda agree, but about half of what we know about history are lies or are greatly exaggerated :oldlol: well that's a different topic anyway. 28 here soo it's really hard for me to comment on the league in the 50's, 60's, 70's and late 80's (that's why I'm here :D).

I have never since the Internet came into existence been on an online forum and thought, "You know, here's a good time for me to use a 'U Mad' picture."

I suppose that's simply indicative of the generational gap. I see no purpose to doing anything online that I wouldn't do offline, while many use the anonymity of the internet to act as they wouldn't/don't offline.

That's how your OP reads, Great. Your job as an "elder" is to educate the youngsters, and leave it at that, if it's your choice. Other older posters, like myself, sometimes like debating these younger guys, if for no other reason than sometimes some facts get brought out that maybe they didn't know (or I didn't know).

Most kids probably lie about their age, because they fear that they will ridiculed, or patronized, if they don't. They want the chance to be treated as equals.

Some pretend to be older, as a form of social posturing. They think that claiming an advanced age will give them some authority over others, or at least enhance their credibility. In these cases we should judge them by their posts, and set aside any claim that they make about their age. If they bring new and interesting information into the discussion, they should be praised for their knowledge, or wisdom. If they flaunt their ignorance, their arguments should be ignored, or refuted.

It's not that there is anything wrong with it, it's that it's not funny (to me). Ever.

It's not creative, it's using someone else's joke over and over and over again. It's immature, like a lot of things I thought were funny when I was younger. I'll expand at the end of this post.

http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/images/smilies/cheers.gif

That's how it reads to you. That's not at all the message I was trying to get across.

I don't know how old any of the people I regularly speak with are, but my guess is most are not as old as me. That's no matter.

My point was regarding the people whose conduct and content inspires me to put them on the ignore list. I am always surprised after seeing a "u mad" post or an obvious effort at trolling, when I click on the ignore button and see in their profile that they claim to be 25 or older.

I have no problem with younger people using the board and behaving however they want. This site welcomes any traffic it can get obviously and values quantity over quality, the opposite of my personal preference. We all use the site for our own reasons and that's the definition of free and fair.

I can't imagine why you'd think I take it personally, there is nothing personal about an anonymous forum. My question was simply about people lying about their age. The reasons for people doing so have been covered in this thread.

I don't think the "you weren't alive then" angle is ever a valid argument. It's also not a valid excuse for not knowing something. People today seem to take pride in their ignorance often. As an example Twitter. How often does someone of the older generation make news or die and Twitter is littered with "WTF is that", "Never heard of him", "Whose this old guy"...even during the Olympics when Paul McCartney performed people were boasting almost that they didn't know who he was. A simple google search would have cleared up their question of course and hidden their lack of knowledge. But instead they wear it as a retarded badge of honor.

Concluding,

When I was a kid/young adult I thought a lot of things that aren't funny to me now, were funny. I thought it was funny to yell "trim" or "*****" while walking down a busy street. I thought it was funny to throw food out the back of a moving car on the express way while on trips up north. I thought Adam Sandler was funny. I loved finding chat rooms in 1995 and trying to get a rise out of someone who took the internet to serious in my opinion. I enjoyed a lot of popular culture elements that now make me cringe.

I don't now enjoy those same things or their evolutionary equivalents, and either do my peers by in large. Thus I am surprised to find so many people who claim to be old like me find these new incarnations of popular humor appealing. Also very surprised that anyone born before the first Bush took office would still be trolling on the internet. I am sure it happens, but it seems impossible that it happens as frequently as I perceive it to.

In summation, aww **** it.

I guess when people say they are older, they feel it adds more legitimacy to their claims and their agendas.

I'm 17, and I have no reason to lie about it. I feel my opinion should still be respect since I know the game and have studied it since I was a little kid, but I do understand that I have no lived long enough to see 90% of the players that have ever played - my knowledge really only dates back to about 2003. Before that is sort of a blur, except for the few Heat games that I would go to with the core of EJ, Brian Grant and later Caron Butler.

So because its not funny to you or whoever, that makes the use of them immature? I don't see how the "u mad" picture I posted in the thread I linked you to should be labeled immature. To me thats an example of an appropriate time to use one. You said "It's not that there is anything wrong with it" so I assume you agree? You also said it just isn't funny to you but I don't see that as relevant.

One example of an inappropriate time would be when person A conducts a thought out argument and then person B, instead of conducting one himself to counter, posts a "u mad" meme. Thats immature and that person is in the wrong.

I'd like to here your opinion on the use of the smilies, especially the newer ones.

So because its not funny to you or whoever, that makes the use of them immature?

It's immature because it's immature. It's following a trend that will go away. It's what I did when I was immature and what's immature people do now.

I don't see how the "u mad" picture I posted in the thread I linked you to should be labeled immature. To me thats an example of an appropriate time to use one. Don't think of immature as a bad thing. That's immature thinking. It's part of growing up and evolving as a person. I don't think it makes someone stupid, or a bad person to use those things, or even that it makes them a jerk. I just know I don't want to hang with anyone who thinks a "u Mad" picture is funny. It'd be like if someone said to me "I love Tyler Perry movies" Doesn't mean they are bad people, just that they aren't going be enjoyable for me to talk to.

One example of an inappropriate time would be when person A conducts a thought out argument and then person B, instead of conducting one himself to counter, posts a "u mad" meme. Thats immature and that person is in the wrong.

That is immature yes, but it's also being a douche. That's where I draw the distinction. Being immature is not a bad thing, being a douche is.

I'd like to here your opinion on the use of the smilies, especially the newer ones.

I don't think I've ever used a smiley in any context. I would always rather express myself with words. There are plenty of them that do a much better job than an emoticon.

To be honest, when people use them I don't really take what they have to say nearly as serious.

It's immature because it's immature. It's following a trend that will go away. It's what I did when I was immature and what's immature people do now.
Disagreed. Yes its following a trend that will go away, but thats not necessarily a bad or immature thing. Not in this case anyway.

I see what we have here, this explains everything. I can't imagine you don't associate with someone who wouldn't find at least one of the thousands of "u mad" pictures at least somewhat funny. I laugh (not literally) at the thought of you thinking that anyone who said to you "I love Tyler Perry movies" you wouldn't enjoy talking to.

That is immature yes, but it's also being a douche. That's where I draw the distinction. Being immature is not a bad thing, being a douche is.
Agreed

I've seen some of the more respectable posters on this forum use them plenty. Posters I bet you'd agree are among the most respectable.

Fair enough, I didn't think I was immature when I was either. And I don't now, but i bet in a few years time...

Surely you're right. I confess that what I said has to be hyperbole, however if someone I knew thought that was funny, I would shake my head at them and tell them they're wrong.

As for Tyler Perry movies, I am pretty sure I'm right on there. No one actually likes those movies (except stupid people), if they do, I don't want to meet them.

Not what i am arguing, just saying I don't find it an effective or worthwhile way of communicating.

Good discussion young buck.

Bolded is as stupid and immature as it gets.

:oldlol: What do you think of L.Kizzle? If I remember correct you once said he played a huge part in the reason you continue doing what you do on this board. Ask him how he feels about Tyler Perry. Nonetheless...

Ironic, since the phrase "Kill Yourself" was started by the younger guys. http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/images/smilies/lol.gif

That's the reason people shouldn't get on their high horses on message boards. You're bound to post sh!t that you forget about that was immature or childish. Sometimes a person can push your buttons to cause you to "fight fire with fire" using their own tactics against them.

It's all in good fun, and keeping the board interesting. I just think there's room from everybody, including the people that I can't stand here.

The concept of "maturity" has been completely obliterated in this thread, but okay.

I'm 21 and I have my own "U mad" gif.

You can always die young and never get old.

When you're old, at least you've made it there.

I guess but I think everyone would rather be in their 20's then be an old man. I mean body parts stop functioning correctly, libido goes down, hair loss, memory loss, arthritis, and in America most of the elderly are living below the poverty level. When you are young you haven't been tortured and you have a clean slate. You are happy. Then life drags you down.

Truth. Kids are dying young in car accidents, gang shootings and wars every day. Youth is not some "magic bullet" that protects you from checking outta here. Reggie Lewis died young, yet Bill Russell's still alive and kicking it.

I don't think I've ever posted "u mad?" but I post a ton of stupid stuff and am 38. At issue is that, to me, the internet is one place I can blow off steam and act like a jerk sometimes. All the pent up frustration from work ya dig?

Also a place you can be hypocritical and complain about other people acting like a jerk yet you admitted that's one of the reasons you roam the internet. Go figure.

I am 20 years old. I don't see a problem when someone from time to time trolls just for fun. But if your life is to live in these and other forums and just troll you need some help.
